To want to start a new hobby advise me :)

I am looking for a new hobby with the following criteria..

: Not expensive
: Something a fat middle aged woman can do/learn to do.
: Something fun.
: Something active.

I already run on treadmill / outside when well enough.

I swim once a week with family. I have swimming pass but find solo swimming relaxing but boring. I am not a good swimmer.

I have done aqua, aerobics, Zumba, yoga loads...bored now.

There is a local hockey and badminton clubs but guessing I would need to be younger and fitter to join ? Though I will ring and enquire as I use to love playing both at school....many years ago.

Any suggestions ?

There is a local karate club...my daughter tried it. But they are all scarily good and high belts...I would be facing the wrong direction at all times ! Maybe I should try it for a laugh.

DH refuses to dance...he suggested mountain biking but I would just fall off !

I love the idea of pottery making but I do need to get more healthy.

Another vote for geocaching. We've done some pretty big walks since we started and it usually takes you to interesting or picturesque places.

LoupGarou · 09/04/2017 21:43

I watch music videos (mainly Bollywood and Asian pop) on YouTube and learn the dances from them. 3 yr old DS and I do it every day, usually for about an hour. It's great fun, free and active, and surprisingly satisfying as you master each dance Smile

Tennis?
The beginners group at my local club look like they have loads of fun. Many of them wouldn't be classed as beginners any more but refuse to move up because they'd miss their mates.
All shapes, sizes and ages.

HappCatt · 09/04/2017 21:50

Badminton is brilliant fun and definitely ok for players of all ages and abilities. You can still play decent games even if one player is noticeably weaker unlike tennis where players need to be more evenly matched.

The other good thing about badminton is it's often run on a drop in basis and you pay as you go. It often ends up a lot cheaper than badminton.

HappCatt · 09/04/2017 21:56

Typo. - cheaper than tennis NOT badminton.

Babieseverywhere · 09/04/2017 22:53

Drop in...would be good

We have adult tap dancing in my area. All ages.

Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 09/04/2017 23:24

I took up ballet and tap for the first time in my late 40s and while several stone overweight, love both.

annandale · 09/04/2017 23:30

Another vote for badminton. Much easier on the joints than tennis, easier to take up as an adult I believe than other sports, but active and flexible/convenient.

Otherwise have a think about rowing - there might be a club near you. It can be relatively expensive but not at first. There are often novice rowers' courses that are very reasonable. Can be really sociable if you get into a nice club.

Rastel38 · 09/04/2017 23:30

Latin line dancing or American line dancing.

MadameJosephine · 09/04/2017 23:31

Belly dancing, I love it!

SabineUndine · 09/04/2017 23:36

Nordic walking!
Table tennis?

BeachyKeen · 10/04/2017 00:15

Do you live near water? I go beach combing nearly every day, you get fabulous exercise because you are walking on so many surfaces, climbing, crouching , etc
Plus you can go in any weather!
Some thing I found this weekend

Nordic walking and/or canoeing.

Babieseverywhere · 10/04/2017 14:36

No beach near here and I am not keen on water.

Think I will contact the local hockey/netball/badminton teams and see how open they are to have an unfit older member.

I have also found a 6 week tennis course with a drop in session during the week. I have always wanted to learn to play tennis (no idea why) Maybe I could do the beginners course and see how that goes.

There is also touch rugby and skatefit local classes I might try.

Thanks for all the ideas.

In my 50s. Have done circuit training. Love it as not boring or tedious with the constand changing. May be classrs at your local gym.

trixymalixy · 10/04/2017 14:46

Tennis!

I joined my local club about 5 (?) years ago now and i just love it. You're never too old to start. There's a couple in their 70s that go to my coaching session that have just taken it up, they're amazing.

I play for the teams now, but my favourite part is the beginners coaching session still. It's mostly middle aged to elderly women with a couple of men. We have an absolute scream and all went to Tenerife for the weekend last year. I was the youngest at age 40.

girlandboy · 10/04/2017 14:51

Another enthusiastic walker here! Make sure you do it briskly though no ambling

But also I've just taken up bell ringing! Not handbells, but church tower bells. This is surprisingly energetic made me hot and sweaty after 5 minutes, but that might just be me and it's surprisingly good fun!

girlandboy · 10/04/2017 14:52

Oh, and it's free!!
