AIBU to think M&S designers are on glue?

WTF is this? I genuinely can't understand how they came up with this idea? Did they have a bunch of yellow t shirts lurking in the stock room and a bored work experience student who was a sea cadet?

Late April fool?

I used to get the majority of my wardrobe at M & S but haven't both anything in there for a good 3 or 4 years now. Their buyers are getting it so so wrong, yet it just seems to keep on going. It's extraordinary that they are getting any sales at all.
I went over to Next but their quality is shocking - cheap clothes sold as mid range. Not sure where to go now tbh.

Hmmmm... I feel quite enthusiastic about that skirt! I can definitely see how the skirt would work.

Unfortunately, I fear that on me, it would look more Dalek, and less Barbarella!

I would love to know at what point M&S's investors draw the line and say 'enough is enough - go back to the old classics formula'. Presumably they haven't yet realised that the world is separating out into cheap and luxe, and it's the middling brands which are bleeding to death.

I love the skirt. In fact I have an almost exact same one in gold from Topshop

The top is awful... the skirt could be really cool on someone edgy enough but would need to be styled with black opaque tights, brogues and a black turtle next sweater tucked in, maybe some 80s geometric stud earrings....

Haven't they lost millions due to poor clothing sales over the past couple of years? No bloody wonder! My parents gave me a £100 M&S voucher for Christmas a couple of years back and I was delighted, straight in for clothes and naice ham. Could I find any ruddy clothes? Flipping no way! One pair of trousers after searching the whole store! I asked for Asda vouchers this year! I wouldn't dream of going in there for clothes now.

I got complimented on my top, today - it was from M and S.

All shops have horrors,in them, and all shops have nice stuff. I'm sure if we we looked in all the different shops we would would find horrors. Never can understand why M and S gets the short straw on Mumsnet.

I don't see why M&S is so unpopular on Mumsnet, plenty of their clothes are nice. I am young and buy things from there, and I'm always getting compliments on my clothes! So there!

I was in M&S in France yesterday and they had some nice stuff. I could have chosen 10 things in a flash but holixay budget didnt allow..Do they do different stuff for each country?

Their stuff is horrendous just now - haven't seen the skirt or yellow top in store but my nearest store has the blue frilly top on a dummy - horrible. They are selling one of those three quarter length sleeve jackets for £35 which looks and feels thin and cheap and which i'd expect to see in Primark for a tenner. Sizes are also smaller - I got some trousers from there 2 years ago which I really liked and which still fit perfectly but getting a bit worn as I've had them on so much, so when I saw them in store again thought I'd get another pair. Picked up same size without trying on, got home & can't even get them to meet at the waist- and they are too short. To be fair there's not really anything decent anywhere just now - I bought a few tops from Next last year but so far this year have not seen a single thing I would want to buy , everything's frills and big bell sleeves and far too short in the body, and Next are doing a horrible range with cats on. Most stuff now seems to be made in places like Vietnam & is just cheap rubbish. Quite liking Monsoon but it's pricey

katseye7 I think you've hit the nail on the head there - if only M&S management could realise that!! They have no idea who their target market is for clothing.

My Nan is in her 80s - she doesn't buy anything from M&S. She thinks the styles are too young/trendy.

My Mum is in her 50s - she doesn't buy anything from M&S. She thinks the styles are too trendy or too old ladyish.

I'm in my 30s - I don't buy anything from M&S because I think the styles are too trying-to-be-trendy (but not succeeding!)

Even the basics, like basic cotton knickers that I've worn since I was a teenager (not the same knickers - just the same style!) they don't do anymore.

I was wondering about this as I gazed at a pink pleated skirt made of pink dralon velour,

I think the T shirt with rope is OK though, with dark skinny denim jeans or shirts on holiday .

Shan't be buying it though, this seasons 's micro trend of yellow is. It my colour.

I think we criticise m&s because we expect decent quality basics, especially for work. But what we're getting at present is thin, cheap fabrics in suspect patterns and a lack of decent work trousers (unless mustard in a size 6 or 26 will suit). We expect that from primark or new look, not m&s.

Also, make your tops an inch longer. Women are taller these days.

Agree with GlitterGlue that the reason M & S get a hard time is because it should be where we go for our slightly boring, basic staples. Black trousers, undies, t-shirts, jackets and sweaters. We've never expected high fashion and what they do is all slightly wrong, too many frills, too short, poor material. Trying to please everyone and pleasing no one really.

Tops are way too short, I've said before that when people wear leggings and skinnies as so many do then it shouldn't be hard to work out that tops need to be longer.

The perfumes are great although there are rarely testers in my store, which is a massive error and the dummies and windows are poorly dressed, I don't think the staff have training in this area. In my store they just whack any old clothing on them, there's no putting together of an outfit so I might see a casual top paired with a work style skirt and trainers and maybe a hat - bizarre!

I agree with everyone who thinks they've lost their way and have done for years now.

There's nowhere reasonably priced to shop now. Next are poor and randomly sized, Monsoon are too expensive, as are Fat Face, Phase 8, Mint Velvet etc etc.

It's nearly impossible to buy a reasonable priced straightforward wardrobe of basics anywhere.

My mum and her friend- both in their 70s and not trendsetters- have a competition to see how many 'horrors' they can spot in M&S clothing. They are so their target audience but they only laugh at their clothes. They do buy most of their food from M&S though
