To be annoyed at driving 91 mph on a 70 mph road.

On a 70mph road with myself in the back as 7 month of DD was crying so 5 year old is in the front.

I was furious. OH rolls eyes when I shout "wow!! Slow down! Your going 91 mph!!"

Then give him death stare.

He replies "stop looking at me like that. I'm not going to crash."

It makes me so frustrated as he just doesn't take it serious.

I know it's common to go slightly over the speed limit but this was too far for me. It's really annoyed me but I don't want it to ruin our day out.

you might need to re-read Grin
others clearly state that at the beginning, I was arguing that the two are not directly linked...

Dothehokeykokey · 09/04/2017 22:03

Is doing 91 mph more dangerous than doing 50? Yes.

Is it necessarily too dangerous to be done with kids in the car? No

I would guess I exceed 90mph nearly everyday of my life on roads that are single carriageway as we have no dual carriageways or motorways, and also no speed limit out of town. (Isle of Man)

I do over 100mph nearly everyone I pop to the loaval shop 2 miles away.

In a well maintained modern car on the right roads in the right conditions and with the right observation it really isn't an issue

WHY? Confused

NotYoda · 09/04/2017 22:08

Sorry, I mistyped

You seem to be saying that I and others think that speed alone kills. I don't think that

Dothehokeykokey · 09/04/2017 22:08

Why not?

NotYoda · 09/04/2017 22:09

It's pathetic. The boasting on here. Truly pathetic.

PinkDaffodil2 · 09/04/2017 22:10

While driving at 91 is more dangerous at 70, I'd say that it's quite common, and is something you souls have raised afterwards unless the were particular reasons you thought it was particularly dangerous right then. Shouting at someone and giving them a noticeable 'death stare' whilst they're driving at any speed on the motorway is surely just as bad!

NotYoda · 09/04/2017 22:10

I drive a car that can't do more than 70. Wanker eh? Probably causing accidents left right and centre, through holding up the big dicks

ZilphasHatpin · 09/04/2017 22:11

Why not?

Loads of reason, you not being immortal is a pretty big one.

Again, why do you need to travel at over 100mph to go to the shop?

Dothehokeykokey · 09/04/2017 22:13

I don't need to go over 100 in the same way you don't need to drive rather than walk.

I enjoy it, it does no one any harm, and it gets me there more quickly so o choose to do it.

ZilphasHatpin · 09/04/2017 22:21

Do you think your 100+mph is a safe speed on the single carriageway roads you do it on?

Dothehokeykokey · 09/04/2017 22:25

Based on the fact I have done it at least one a day every day for 15 years (and have been passed by motorbikes going quicker) and never had an issue I would say yes.

The only accident I remember on the road in question is in the village in a 40mph limit

ZilphasHatpin · 09/04/2017 22:27

Don't you ever meet other cars/tractors/pedestrians? Is it a straight road?

coconuttella · 09/04/2017 22:29

I drive a car that can't do more than 70

If your car can't go more than 70 then it must be extremely old, and therefore probably far less safe than a modern car going 90mph on a clear motorway.

passmethewineplease · 09/04/2017 22:30

Why would anyone need to drive at 100mph?

Are you in a rush?
Just enjoy going fast?

I think it's ridiculous myself, speed itself might be the issue but it does change braking distances and things like that.

I'd much rather try to avoid an accident at 60 than 100...

If you meet a car coming the other way it's not an issue. If you meet one going same way and nothing coming other way you just pass it.

I walk on that road regularly and people fly up and down it but there is a pavement- so no issue.

Dothehokeykokey · 09/04/2017 22:34

Sorry

DoTheHokeyKokey

I suspect you might be enjoying winding people up but taking what you say on face value are you just a tad worried you might meet one of those motorbikes that that have previously overtaken you at over 100mph going in the OPPOSITE direction whilst traveling along your route to the newspaper shop.

Or is that just part of the fun.

yy I second that hairyhands

The M4 has a long stretch which is variable. I'm yet to see it set above 50mph even in the middle of the night. It's a money making exercise.

Wrong! I travel on the M4 regularly to get to work and I know for certain the gantry regularly displays 60 to keep the traffic flow constant. Also there are times of day outside peak flow when it clearly displays National Speed Limit symbol. It has significantly improved my journey by controlling lunatics from driving too fast.

daisychain01 · 10/04/2017 02:44

No money is made if drivers stick to the speed limit.

TittyGolightly · 10/04/2017 06:59

I'm referring to the Newport stretch. Are you?

cocconutella

Safe in what way?

I've never had an accident

therefore it's fine

Seems to be what other people on here are saying...

Probably

akkakk · 10/04/2017 07:42

NotYoda aah that makes more sense Grin
apologies if I implied that about your comments, however there are those on here - quite a lot who seem to think that, yet it is blatantly not true, excessive speed can clearly be an issue and may even be a contributory issue in an accident, but it is surprisingly rare that it is the only issue...

what is interesting is how many people on here and in life generally really do not understand driving as well as perhaps they should... they pass a test with basic car control and then put in no further effort to improve, they see driving as a means to get from A to B and almost a necessary evil... anyone who might enjoy it is clearly wrong / derranged / bad for society...

yet how many other skills would we do expect the same? music for example, would you really learn the basics on how to make a note on a violin and then do no further practice, have no further lessons, just do the same for twenty years and say that you are good because you have done it for 20 years? of course not, you would have lessons, you would practice scales and pieces, you would look to continually improve... so why don't people do the same with driving? How many people on have had lessons since passing their test? How many practice e.g. gear changes with rev matching for a smoother gear change, or use trail braking to balance a car as they go around a corner - either practising in their normal journeys or actually going out to practise?

and this is evident in the comments - there is a real lack of understanding about driving shown above, e.g. the comments about the poster who does 100mph to pick up bread (IOM so legal!) asking questions about what you would do if the overtaking motobike was coming the other way, and implying there would be a crash! come on, that driver would simply slow down / the motorbike would simply not overtake! Driving at 100 mph doesn't mean getting in the car and going at 100 all the time despite anything else - it means driving in a fluid manner during which the speed might be at 100 some of the time, at other times it might be at 20!

back to the music analogy, driving should be like a well crafted piece of music, slowing down, speeding up, pauses, louds and softs, appropriate always to the context... and like a musician lots of practice is needed to do it well

back to the OP, id a driver simply drives only at 90 without fitting the speed to the context, then that is like a musician playing an entire piece fff and with no expression, the issue is with the driver / musician, not the 90mph / fff which might be okay some of the time...

as for those who say that everyone is laughing at idiots who speed, that would be like musicians laughing at those who are better - it diesn't happen, or they would be the ones to look stupid...

sure, if a driver has only one speed of fast then they are clearly not good, but like a musician, if they have a whole repertoire of options and use them appropriately, and higher speeds are amongst them, but so are lower speeds, they might just be a better driver than you... instead of laughing at them, why not see if you also could improve?

most people get offended if it is suggested that their driving is not in any way amazing, but in reality an hour in a car with most drivers would be enough to suggest changes which would make them safer / more fuel efficient / more sympathetic to the car mechanically - make them better drivers... so why do folks not take that time?

You love for driving really shines through. It is an interesting skill. But why so much ego involved from some on here?

This thread, for me, boils down to the OP feeling unsafe in the car. Rather than making up scenarios where, actually he's an Advanced Driver, think it's safe to assume that he is, like most people, not a good driver

And that's without even mentioning that he is breaking the law in a car with his children inside

Anyone who has been a victim of, had a friend who was a victim of, or has worked with people who have suffered in RTAs does not find this dick-swinging (or Tit- swinging amusing)

I'm out
