To think you can't enjoy exercise if you just ... don't?

I would be interested if anybody ever has because I. Hate. It.

I hate - classes (am a bit thick slow to pick things up, so can take keep up. Plus can see myself in the mirror) the gym generally as I just get bored and it hurts and I can't focus on anything like music or a film because all I can think is 'ow this hurts, ow, ow, ow' walks (get bored on my own) running (no chance) cycling (hurts my backside) swimming (I just can't be doing with all the faff.)

So - any ideas? Or should I just write off exercise and moderate my food intake RIGHT down?

If that's a dig at me, carry on :)

I know I'm a bit thick. I've said as much myself. You don't need to make side-digs!

Lift weights. Make your goal to lift heavier and heavier weights. Getting fitter will be incidental. I enjoy deadlifting, squats, and dumbbell press. Look up guides online like Nia Shanks and Girls Gone Strong.

I've tried couch to 5k.

I can't run.

Seriously.

In any case, I really don't think running is very good for you.

If you keep at something for long enough you end up enjoying it.

I didn't enjoy running at first, but joined a club and enjoyed the social aspect. Actually liking running came later, but I must admit that if I just had to do it on my own, I probably would do it much less. I mainly like the chatting (we chat all the way around). I am not the only person who feels this way!

It doesn't have to be running, there are walking groups etc.

TheStoic · 09/04/2017 15:18

You think running is not good for just you? Or for anybody?

dangermouseisace · 09/04/2017 15:18

I'd counter that running is good for you, given the wide ages of people in my club and their general wellbeing. Road running isn't great for you all the time- trail running is much gentler on the joints as the ground is softer…and you get nicer scenery.

catscurledupbythefire · 09/04/2017 15:19

Anybody. It's not great for your joints. Especially if you're fat to start with. Anyway, it's a moot (?) point as I can't run.

i have a similar post on the exercise thread. im not over weight and ok regarding fitness. but im just pissed that I have to keep doing exercise like forever to maintain being slim/fit healthy! I don't hate it but I don't enjoy it. especially when there better thing s to be getting on with.

to think all this effort and the older I get the slower pace I go - its all going to mush anyway. I evil eye those lucking ones who eat loads, sit for hours and shit out the weight! Wink

TheStoic · 09/04/2017 15:20

5 minutes worth of research will tell you you're wrong about running.

This is a very strange thread.

catscurledupbythefire · 09/04/2017 15:21

Do you think so? I think there have been some strange posts, but for the most part it's been light hearted and self deprecating.

I don't dread running, I just can't run. I can run for little bursts looking like a wounded warthog but then have to stop. Last time I ran was for a train. I thought I was going to die
Sorry you said this ^^, which prompted my post about c25k being designed for people who 'can't run.' I was the same until I, you know, went and did it for 30 secs at a time rather than trying to keep up with someone else or run until I was completely worn out.

catscurledupbythefire · 09/04/2017 15:24

Thing is Shotgun, if I run for thirty seconds that's all fine and good but I can never get past the 30 second thing. My absolute max, when I weighed 9 stone and was healthy and could do hours on the rower and stepper and treadmill was about 2 minutes. I just can't do it. Don't know why. But anyway it doesn't matter:)

TheStoic · 09/04/2017 15:25

You've essentially just described interval training.

ElspethFlashman · 09/04/2017 15:26

Running is one thing I'd never do, tbh. Too high impact on the knees/hips and it looks more like a religion than fun. All the runners I pass (in the car!) are staring blankly at the ground in front of them as they pound away. Nope.

ElspethFlashman · 09/04/2017 15:28

Has anyone tried badminton? I'm intrigued by it. Seems both social and unlikely to hurt.

catscurledupbythefire · 09/04/2017 15:28

No, I've described not being able to run!

OP posts:
ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 09/04/2017 15:28

Treadmill is a lot different though- it's not really a natural motion as the surface is moving under you rather than you propelling yourself forward. Plus it's bloody stressful having to mess about with controls trying to do intervals - I'm always convinced I'll fall off. Just running outdoors is much more relaxing and satisfying.

TheStoic · 09/04/2017 15:30

You can run. For 30 seconds. You said so yourself.

catscurledupbythefire · 09/04/2017 15:30

If you can. I can do less outside than on a treadmill. But anyway running is definitely not my thing.

Some of us just don't like exercise and others do or can force themselves to do it. Simple as that. If you don't like it then I do find just doing active things at home - a load of housework, cleaing a garage, cutting back bushes in the garden and that kind of thing or even just walking round town is okay but even that's an effort.

They are now calling diabetes 2 "walking deficiency" and that's not wrong. I am not a fan of running because of knee damage but we all should try to walk - easier said than done.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 09/04/2017 15:31

Best stock up on pain-killers now op - looks like you'll be needing them.

catscurledupbythefire · 09/04/2017 15:32

Sorry, Shotgun? Hmm

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 09/04/2017 15:33

As I said earlier, arthritis is no joke.

Ecureuil · 09/04/2017 15:33

The thing is, exercise is pretty essential to maintain health in old age. So I guess you have to choose between doing something you hate, or not doing it and suffering the consequences. It's entirely up to you.

catscurledupbythefire · 09/04/2017 15:35

Well, yes, if one lives that long. I'm not sure it is essential in the way you mean though.
