To hate this smashcake craze?

skerrywind · 09/04/2017 10:35

A close member of our family has just spent £100 on a smashcake for her 1st baby's birthday.
I find it quite disgusting to waste food like this. It surprises me that I have quite a gutteral reaction to this. I also find it disgusting to see people in baths of beans etc.

Anyone else feel like this or am I just a killjoy?

Yes I'm with the "making memories" haters.
All so contrived. Complete with naff headband for lil princess. Or lil man.

MaisyPops · 11/04/2017 10:57

And here was me thinking babies get covered in cake the second you give them a piece... it is cute mine.

Why you need to make/buy a full cake for cake smash is beyond me.
because it can be photographed before, during and after to makr excellent instagram pics

Just googled it. There are full cake smash photoshoots in a studio. I dont get endless baby shoots. Whats rhe point. The kid cant remember it so its just about the parents.

iloveeverykindofcat · 11/04/2017 11:04

OMG do not get me started on lil man.
My rage for this expression is out of all proportion.

LaurieMarlow · 11/04/2017 11:18

I can't understand why people get so exorcised about how other people dress their children or the pet names they use for them.

It has nothing to do with you. 'Rage' is utterly out of proportion. What on earth is wrong with you that you care so deeply?

Alwayshungryforcrisps · 11/04/2017 12:19

I genuinely can't believe how unpleasant and scathing people are on this thread, it says much more about them as people than the people that they are so derogatory about

You have to admit that it's such a ridiculous and pretentious craze that it is difficult to keep a straight face.

lynney88 · 11/04/2017 13:09

If you look at a child covered in chocolate cake and get scatalogical images then I'm afraid you quite possibly need help to deal with your anal retentive behaviour!

My daughter has wore a headband three times in her life and three times it never lasted more than 3-5 minutes and then it was abandoned. She doesn't like them so I don't force it.

This was her first ever birthday cake and both my kids rarely get sweets or gifts and I spent no where near £100 on the whole thing £40 for the whole lot, outfit, cake, shoot and pictures.

I'm not wasteful, yes I wasted a perfectly good £3 birthday cake but it doesn't happen otherwise. We are very waste savvy in my house and we recycle as well as compost.

We are not chavs in the slightest.

Geez the judgement on this is unreal!

Do you know what I think is chavvy?

Buying yourself booze, fags, drugs, clothes, nights out ahead of your kids needs. I also find swapping prams and buying new ones every two minutes very chavvy. I don't like babies in track suits.

You have your views and I have mine. We all had a fantastically amazing time with this shoot considering it was only the 2nd time her paternal grandmother seen her too, so it was an amazing family experience.

We also had a full family shoot done too.

She is not a fussy eater and people praise her on her eating habits because she is fantastic with her manners and cutlery so that ONE cake smash hardly had an impact on her behaviour!

Philoslothy · 11/04/2017 13:28

I would far rather be somebody who had a wall full of cakesmash photos that somebody with the sneering, judgemental and snobbish views on this thread.

HoneyBeeMum1 · 11/04/2017 14:47

I don't understand why you have to 'smash' the cake. Why not just eat it like normal civilised people?

Surely photos of your children are more charming when they are clean, rather than covered in food like a feral animal.

HoneyBeeMum1 · 11/04/2017 14:48

I must apologise for my previous post. Most animals avoid covering themselves in food and teach their young to eat properly.

habibihabibi · 11/04/2017 14:57

lynney88Post those pics on netmums and your will get lots of ((hugs))) sparkles pink fluffy headband and cake smashing love.

lynney88 · 11/04/2017 14:58

Wow what judgmental a**e you are! 😳

We are perfectly civilised and normal. Now run along you must be late for your next snobbery class. Off you trot.

lynney88 · 11/04/2017 15:04

Thanks habibi but I didn't post the pictures for likes just to make a point.

Imagine saying it looks like she is covered in sh*t. What is wrong with these people? Probably the same type of people that won't allow a speck of dirt on their child or allow their children to play outside for fear of germs and Heaven forbid a bit of dirt covering their precious, bubble wrapped little darlings!

Poor sheltered children.

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 11/04/2017 15:10

And very well too philoslothy night I add.

I'm sorry but I find those cake smash things truly hideous. They're totally contrived and ultimately wasteful.
I've got lots of photos of my children. They're just playing or laughing or being themselves not trussed up and ramming a synthetic pile of shite into their mouth.
I can't stand how some parents try to make us all love their children as much as they do.

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 11/04/2017 15:12

Lynney88 I don't think they're germophobes

lynney88 · 11/04/2017 15:22

My baby had never had chocolate or cake before it is a rare treat for her and at that stage just an introduction.

She was having a photo shoot done for her first birthday anyway as we didn't have a newborn set done.

So I bought a chocolate cake and a cute little outfit for her. So what if she's messy for ten minutes, so what if I wasted one frigging chocolate cake (it's not as if it matters considering the amount of you that won't give your child a piece of cake), so what if I think it's cute and you don't?

The biggest problem you all seem to have is that she looks like she's covered in poo-think they're the people that have a problem and need professional help.

Redglitter · 11/04/2017 15:24

My dislike for cake smashes has nothing to do with the wasted cake I just don't find photos of children covered in food in the least bit cute.

lynney88 · 11/04/2017 15:26

Would love to know if all these people screaming "waste" and "synthetic crap" grow their own super organic veg, milk their own cows, recycle and compost.

I recycle, compost and come up with new meals using leftovers. I am not a wasteful person this was a special occasion.

You must need an oxygen tank sitting way up there....

HoneyBeeMum1 · 11/04/2017 15:30

Seriously lynney88, she looks as if she is covered in poo. Think about it - if she really was covered in poo, would she look any different?

The poor poppet is utterly degraded and if - despite the response of so many other mothers - you still think think this treatment of your daughter was appropriate, it is you who should consider professional help.

Your daughter looks (under that disgusting muck) like a pretty child. Surely you could have found a more appropriate and dignified way to remember her special day.

All me weird but I love seeing kids covered in food it shows they've enjoyed it and are ultimately having a learning experience.

Mine is very good with her table manners the cake smashbthe exception to that but we didn't actively say "yay throw it" or clap our hands and praise her. She literally had never had cake or chocolate before and had fun.

And she started tentatively I might add with just sticking her finger in and tasting the buttercream. Then it was go time and the cake was enjoyed.

lynney88 · 11/04/2017 15:34

If I looked at my baby and she was covered in that shade of shit I'd be seeking medical help! 😂😂

Seriously you lot need to chill out. She's not degraded and she is beautiful. We also had a family shoot done and she was put in a mermaid outfit for part of that too.

Cue the anti-mermaid brigade.....
