AIBU by putting everything in the fridge?

I know it sounds bizarre but I like to think I run a tight ship and demand that the following stays in the fridge and find it very hard to control my temper when they are left in the cupboard:

Tomato sauce
Garlic bulbs
Potatoes
Onions
Jars of condiments

Does anyone else do this?

I keep all veg in fridge, I find potatoes sprout really quickly if they not refridgerated.
Tomato sauce stays in cupboard as they don't like it cold
Jam in fridge but buy squeezy one as was fed up of it going mouldy with people dipping the buttery knife in it!

2 points:
Firstly, as most folk have said, most of those things do not need to be stored in the fridge.
Secondly - you possibly might want to get help with your anger management, as this and find it very hard to control my temper when they are left in the cupboard is completely OTT.

When you live with someone who has different habits /opinions from yourself, you really need to learn you have different opinions, and that is OK, not to lose your temper over something so minor.

TheMysteriousJackelope · 07/04/2017 22:57

I keep potatoes in a box in the bottom of a cupboard, and they are covered with a t-towel. It is the light that causes them to turn green and sprout. If they are kept in the dark they last longer.

Onions and garlic should also be kept out of the fridge in a dry, cool, place, preferably light. So I keep mine in a bowl on the kitchen counter.

My sister insisted on helping with the washing up. This resulted in me playing 'where in the world is the spatula/knife/ladle/rolling pin' for the entire duration of her stay. I did all the cooking and I was surprised at how annoyed I got about not being able to get on but instead having to open every cupboard and drawer in the place to find a potato peeler, so I do sympathize to some extent. She also left the washing up cloth to fester in the sink of greasy water.

Potatoes - in a dark bag outside the back door
Onions & Garlic - in a basket on the worktop
Opened jars - in the cupboard (except mayonnaise and hollandaise)

There was an interesting botanist on BBC Breakfast this morning who's written a book about how to get the most nutrition out of your food, including not putting everything in the fridge. And he knows because he's got degrees and stuff doncha know

klondikecookie · 07/04/2017 23:08

Onions, potatoes and garlic should not be stored in the fridge. Additionally, onions and potatoes shouldn't be stored together.

Ketchup doesn't really matter, even once opened. It does not 'go off' outside of the fridge, but can lose a bit of its colour (although I've never noticed that actually happen).

Condiments; it depends what they are.

So the OP is actually Patrick Bergin.

Opened condiments - yes.

All the rest - definitely not.

COLD ketchup?

Potatoes, onions & garlic in a cool, dark cupboard.

melj1213 · 07/04/2017 23:41

For me, I stick to the "supermarket rule" - if I get it out of a fridge/chiller, it goes in my home fridge; if I get it off a shelf, it goes in a cupboard.

Obviously some things are fine on a shelf but once opened they should go in the fridge but wouldn't live there permanently. EG if I use half a tin of tuna, the unused half goes in tupperware in the fridge to be used up ASAP but there's no way 'd be putting my tins of tuna into the fridge routinely!

You'd hate me OP. I even leave the butter out. Grin

Xmasbaby11 · 08/04/2017 00:03

I don't put butter in the fridge either - only in July and August when it'd melt. It's in a butter dish..

mumeeee · 08/04/2017 00:04

Potatoes, onions and garlic should not be kept in the fridge

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 08/04/2017 00:07

Everything other than potatoes!

Keeping onions in the fridge stops them making your eyes water - I leant this in the Neighbours cookbook circa 1988 ish!!!!!

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 08/04/2017 00:08

Oh! But the butter dish live on top of the toaster in my house!

NeedABumChange · 08/04/2017 00:26

Potatoes and onions in dark cupboard. Garlic in garlic pot on shelf. Sauce and opened condiments in fridge, new ones in cupboard.

feathermucker · 08/04/2017 00:40

Tight ship?! Anger?! Temper?!

But it also turns the starch into sugar quicker (same as for potatoes) and makes them go soft quicker.

The best thing to do is store them in a cool, dry place and, if you're worried about tears, chill them for 30 minutes before chopping (that's straight from the US National Onion Association!)

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 08/04/2017 00:47

Cookie onions don't stay in my house long enough to go soft lol

Crankycunt · 08/04/2017 01:37

Demand Really? Do you really lose your rag if someone puts the ketchup in the cupboard?

I think anger management classes might be a good idea if you get angry over something so insignificant.

ThePiglet59 · 08/04/2017 09:56

None of these things should be in the fridge. You're a looney

rosie1959 · 08/04/2017 10:01

We have a full sacks of potatoes in the winter months can't see me being able to put that in the fridge!

DaintySong · 08/04/2017 13:51

We keep all of those in the fridge too. Condiments are meant to be chilled after opening. Potatoes were sprouting otherwise and we haven't got anywhere else cool enough to keep them but I didn't know it was bad so won't now. Wonder how the supermarket suppliers store potatoes before they get to shops. I guess you can't have frozen chips either then.

BoomBoomsCousin · 08/04/2017 17:12

sheSaid - Neighbours cookbook! I had no idea. What did they put it in it? I can't remember food being a big part of Neighbours at all. I feel like I've missed out for the last 30 years Grin.
