AIBU by putting everything in the fridge?

I know it sounds bizarre but I like to think I run a tight ship and demand that the following stays in the fridge and find it very hard to control my temper when they are left in the cupboard:

Tomato sauce
Garlic bulbs
Potatoes
Onions
Jars of condiments

Does anyone else do this?

I store all those things in the fridge too.
We have a second under counter sized fridge in the garage for potatoes, extra milk, and all the veg to sit in till needed.
One draw is full of apples, the other dairy. Top shelf is full of jars and sauces.
Onions definitely don't make me cry if cut straight from the fridge.

MuncheysMummy · 07/04/2017 22:03

I clearly says on the bottle of sauces and condiments once opened keep refridgerated! Why do so many people not know this??

MuncheysMummy · 07/04/2017 22:03

^^rogue d there!

khajiit13 · 07/04/2017 22:04

I refrigerate all those except potatoes. I put baby potatoes in the fridge but all other potatoes go in the cupboard.

Emphasise · 07/04/2017 22:08

Muncheys - because all those things existed and kept for months long before anyone had fridges. It also says they need to be used within 6 weeks of opening, which is obviously not completely unnecessary and has nothing to do with encouraging you to throw away perfectly good jars and buy another one.

Familyof3or4 · 07/04/2017 22:12

I don't put any of those things in the fridge.
I do like my chocolate cokd though. Freezer even better for chocolate!

Tubbyinthehottub · 07/04/2017 22:13

I keep all that stuff in the fridge. The onions still make me cry

Sara107 · 07/04/2017 22:14

Potatoes are not good in the fridge - l can't quite remember but I think some of the starch converts to sugars giving you a 'wet' textured when you cook them. Tomatoes also deteriorate, the flavour goes out of them. Ketchup and condiments don't need the fridge but it won't harm them.

QODRestYeMerryGentlemen · 07/04/2017 22:16

All of that except spuds

Pigface1 · 07/04/2017 22:17

I used to keep potatoes in the fridge (especially new potatoes) but read something a few weeks ago about them producing a cancer-causing chemical if you keep them so I decided that wasn't worth it. I find onions go off quicker if you refrigerate them. Seems a bit odd to keep garlic in the fridge.

Other than that I'm with you

AgentProvocateur · 07/04/2017 22:20

Nothing off your list goes in the fridge in this house. Generally, my fridge has butter (spreadable lurpak Wink), pesto, ginger, fizzy water, mayo and white wine. That's all.

Bluntness100 · 07/04/2017 22:22

I follow the supermarket rules as I know they have more interest in keeping things fresher for longer than me. As such, no , none of the things you list are in my fridge or a supermarket chiller. I don't see it as running a tight ship to do so, I see it as having very little understanding of food storage.

20nil · 07/04/2017 22:23

Onions kept in the fridge will stop the tears.

2017SoFarSoGood · 07/04/2017 22:29

Re Garlic: Commercially, garlic is stored near 32°F (0°C). However, most home refrigerators are too warm for ideal long-term storage of garlic. Instead, store it in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place in well-ventilated containers such as mesh bags. Storage life is 3 to 5 months under cool (60°F/16°C), dry, dark conditions.

Potatoes go mushy when cooked from the fridge, in my experience.

BoomBoomsCousin · 07/04/2017 22:30

I keep all those things in the fridge in our house in London, everything went off too quickly otherwise. When I lived near Manchester (30 years ago) I didn't have too. Don't know if it's the damp in London or that I had the house hotter (though heating off in kitchen) or the food has changed. May have to rethink potatoes now I've seen LostSight's link though.

haveacupoftea · 07/04/2017 22:32

Yeah i keep all those things in the fridge. Might take the spuds out now though athough the buggers will sprout now before I can use them even if i keep them in the dark.

twisterinyogapants · 07/04/2017 22:33

I don't keep potatoes or onions in my fridge. Only buy what I need for the week and they keep fine on the veg rack.

Revenant · 07/04/2017 22:36

Only things in fridge from your list are cut onions and condiments that could go mouldy like jam. Potatoes onions and garlic - definitely not.

wasonthelist · 07/04/2017 22:36

I like to think I run a tight ship and demand

Thank God I am single and live alone.

honeyroar · 07/04/2017 22:39

Yes I keep all of that in the fridge, but I have a second fridge in the utility for veg. I used to keep potatoes, onions and garlic out of the fridge but they kept sprouting and last longer in the fridge. My chilled onions still make me cry?

shirleycartersaidso · 07/04/2017 22:40

I have a big fridge and I don't have space for non refridgerables to be in there. None of what you said. Reds to be refrigerated.

VeryButchyRestingFace · 07/04/2017 22:41

I like to think I run a tight ship and demand

I don't understand why anyone would like to think they "ran a tight ship" when talking about the familial home, as opposed to a prison place of work.

Really?? 😯

Poster 1: You're a slave driver!
Poster 2: Why, thank you.

wasonthelist · 07/04/2017 22:44

My Jam stopped going mouldy as soon as I stopped putting the butter knife in it - before then it went mouldy in or out of the fridge. Now it's fine at room temperature.

BoomBoomsCousin · 07/04/2017 22:47

To some extent I understand the anger bit.

I get pissed off when stuff gets put in different places. Most of the things in our kitchen have lived in the same spot since we moved years ago. When it gets put somewhere else it means it takes me a lot longer to make dinner, etc and I have to buy things more regularly. It tends to be done out of either laziness (can't be bothered moving things to fit it in properly) or because they don't pay attention to the home they live in, which is pretty disrespectful given the minutiae they do give brain space over too.

I dislike the cooking every night role I've been landed with, the least everyone else can do is put things in the right place. So I kind of understand the anger in that context, though it's not normally the most useful response.

ragdoll700 · 07/04/2017 22:50

Ketchup when its open I keep in the fridge, you are not ment to keep onions, garlic or potatoes in the fridge so yes YABU.
