To think that a name change could change my life?

floraeasy · 03/04/2017 14:01

I've been thinking about this - on and off - for a few years now.

My DH thinks it's daft, but would support me. I'm into some woo stuff, so should confess that first up.

I've been reading the Kabalarian Philosophy site and I am very tempted.

My first name has always bothered me. Much less so now than when I was a child, but part of me doesn't see why I should just accept it either.

I ran my first name through their free assessment page and it is not considered auspicious, whereas my husband's is. The stuff they say about what my name means for my life rings true as that has been my experience.

For a fee they will give me 30 to 50 name suggestions. I hope I like one of them though! It wouldn't be like just choosing any old name I like.

Has anyone changed their name and felt happier and more successful as a result? What problems if any did you encounter?

Thanks all!

You could suffer physically through head tension, with eye, teeth, or sinus problems, headaches, or mentally through worry.

Don't you see how general and cover all bases this statement is? Headaches, eyes, teeth etc are amongst the more common and then they add mental problems just in case. Honestly this describes most of the people i know. And we deffo don't share the same name, but i do have headaches, wear glasses and a missing tooth or two.

Bluntness100 · 04/04/2017 15:01

God the absolute ball ache involved in changing your first name, the admin work associated with it, before training yourself to respond to it and over ride your natural reactions and then in addition training everyone else to call you the new name. For me, you'd have to really hate your existing name or be bored shitless with nothing to do to wish to go to the trouble.

Unless of course uou just play at it, change nothing and just tell people to call you the new name, that's simpler.

The only people I know who changed their first name did so when changing gender. I've never met anyone who has done it otherwise.

floraeasy · 04/04/2017 15:03

Ooh, both Rachel and Jessica are nice.
Are they auspicious to the Kabbalarians then?

Not necessarily. It depends on your DOB and the other name[s] you intend to pair them with, you see.

What's your own middle name?

Anne. This wouldn't work for me either. It's plain enough so that's good though.

Other "ordinary names" then, my schoolmates from the same "era" - Emma, Laura, Lisa, Sarah, Rosie, Lucy, Anna... my own name isn't popular, or auspicious!

These are all good. Thanks for those. Will add them to my pile Grin

Oh yes, it's kind of vague. Most medical problems fall into just about half-a-dozen groups. Different names have different health reports on this system. For most accuracy, it's actually not just the names, it's the numerology combined with DOB and surname.

I can see a whole new chapter of Mumsnet opening up? So what do you all think about fairy-lily-cocoa/bean ?

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 04/04/2017 15:27

If anything is going to give you headaches, mental tension and worry it's attempting to change your name. Confused

ComradeHelveticaBlack · 04/04/2017 15:33

floraeasy do you really want advice from a group of people whose leader was involved in a sex scandal ? Shock

Topseyt · 04/04/2017 16:15

I just put my first and middle names into that name analyser. I must be two completely different people rolled into one.

I have never in my life read such a load of generalised bullshit. Why would you pay these con artists a single penny? Don't be so gullible. That is what they are banking on.

Choose a name you like and use it. Unofficially at first perhaps, and then if you really settle to it go for a deed poll. It doesn't cost anything like the money these people are charging.

ADishBestEatenCold · 04/04/2017 19:20

You should change your name if you wish and (assuming the outlay will have no effect on your family) you should use this company of charlatans if you wish ... but...

assuming that you are an adult with average groups of social and formal contacts, how do you propose to get people to use your new expensive name, floraeasy?

This is a genuine question, I promise you. I have known a few people who have tried to change their name to a completely different one. The only one that succeeded was a chap that changed his whole life. He was moving to another country, starting another job, and very soon met a girl of that country and settled into a permanent relationship with her. A few people from 'home' did visit him, but everybody in his new life referred to his new name. He came home to visit his parents a couple of times, but they simply called him 'son' Smile.

Could you change the way your name is perceived, by both yourself and others, by shortening or lengthening it, or by changing the spelling, even just adding an accent or two to the letters.

RebelRogue · 04/04/2017 19:58

Adish has a pretty good point. If i were to change my name it would be to my nn,so most friends, acquaintances etc even OH use it anyways, which would not be too big a change. Even work would not be too bad as I'm mostly addressed by my surname. But would it work for you and those close and not so close to you?

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 04/04/2017 20:01

You could forever be known as "formerly known as Flora", like Prince (or the artist formerly known as Prince).

KlondikeBar · 04/04/2017 20:15

Someone needs to tell the NHS.

"Well you've had back problems for a while now, so I'm going to give you a prescription to change your name to Betty."

KlondikeBar · 04/04/2017 20:24

These sound like a disgusting group to give your money to, OP

Operating in relative anonymity throughout its seventy year long history, the Kabalarian Philosophy is a Canadian New Religious Movement that became known to the public during the much publicized criminal trial of its most recent leader, Ivon Shearing. Charged with twenty counts of sexually based offenses including rape, indecent assault, and sexual assault, a jury found Shearing guilty of sexually violating the rights of many of his female devotees. The violence Shearing perpetrated against his own members in a religious setting brought to the forefront several interesting dynamics and questions, including Shearing's ability to convince members to submit to his sexual demands. To reveal Shearing's exploitative actions, the contributing factors that enabled him to engage in abusive behavior for twenty years need critical analysis and detailed understanding. This study, therefore, explores the theoretical models that characterize and outline charisma and charismatic authority, sexual violence, and power differentials that coalesced to give rise to an environment where Ivon Shearing was able to sexually manipulate his followers.

While the theoretical models do help in creating a model potentially capable of predicting situations of sexual violence, the Kabalarian Philosophy's case identifies a significant obstacle in establishing a foolproof predictive model: members gave no outward indications that they were in a sexually abusive environment. The failure to be able to apply a predictive model of violence in the Kabalarians' case, however, does present the opportunity to explore the breakdown of control within the movement that led to outside agencies discovering the ongoing abuse. Moreover, the research gained when examining the Kabalarian Philosophy also shows how Shearing used his charismatic authority and control to demand adherence to his unconventional rituals.

By relying on reputedly esoteric doctrine to ultimately justify his actions. Shearing was able to imbue profane acts with an aura of sacred importance convincingly. Since the image of perfection Shearing portrayed was so skillfully maintained, had the internal controls restricting members' interaction with each other not waned, his secretive abuse could have continued indefinitely. This analysis explores each of the elements and unique features of the Kabalarian Philosophy to see how Ivon Shearing was able to manipulate the movement's teachings and beliefs to engage in the sexual exploitation and abuse of his female devotees.

Grin Klondike
Migraines and tension headaches? Forget modern remedies, change your name to Susan.

TroysMammy · 04/04/2017 20:35

After going on their website I am more than happy with my name. Except for the executive position the rest is spot on. I won't be joining up though, I'll use the sense they say I have.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 04/04/2017 20:37

Sorry, Klondi I wasn't laughing about your post r.e Shearing and The Kabalarian Philosophy. Blush That's horrific.

deste · 04/04/2017 20:39

If your name is Flora ( my sisters middle name) why don't you change it to Laura. Just a subtle difference.

floraeasy · 05/04/2017 09:59

My name isn't Flora. I would actually be happy if it was Smile

You'd be wiser to run some names through the babyboard!

Really op I think the hairstyle of people in the world aren't picking their names based on that philosophy and are happy. Pick one you like

FerdinandsRevenge · 05/04/2017 10:02

The majority! Not hairstyle!

floraeasy · 05/04/2017 10:04

Your post was great, with plenty food for thought.

It's a fair question!

You know what I've realised, though? My name is rarely used.

I have a tiny world, work at home, no social life, etc, etc.

I only communicate with my family via emails/calls (they live so far away). They use my name occasionally but mostly use a nickname my sister gave me before she learned to talk Grin

My husband and I never use each other's names. I just realised that! We use generic stuff like "sweet-pea" etc.

I have always been fascinated by names, fuelled I am sure by the problems I had as a shy child with what was a very unusual name in a part of the world where everyone was very down-to-earth. My surname was very pedestrian too, so it never quite gelled, I thought.

I would have to struggle to remember the last time someone used my name IRL. The doctor, I think!

RebelRogue · 05/04/2017 10:24

I always hated my first name. It always felt like it didn't fit,it wasn't me. There were few other people with the same name and the fact that it suited them while they were so different from me increased my conviction it was not "my" name. So when i was about 15-16 I started using a nn ,completely different and unusual where i come from, but everyone just accepted it. For years i only used my real name for official documents and school/work,and even there once i got friendly with people i just expressed my preference for my nn and people used it.
I'm older and wiser now and tbh... I don't really mind it anymore. After all everything I achieved like education, qualifications, jobs etc were achieved by using my real name.

AnathemaPulsifer · 06/04/2017 12:23

We must have the same name and birthday as their description of you is a perfect description of me. I'm even in bed with a headache right now...

or

It's all a load of lies and as a PP has said it's very easy to write sentences that anyone would feel describes them. If you want people to be happy with your statements you word them to emphasise common strengths. If you want them to be unhappy (and pay you to help them) you write them to emphasise common weaknesses.
