To think that hot cross buns should be eaten hot?

MillieMoodle · 31/03/2017 20:57

My first thread in AIBU, but DH has driven me to write this with his insistence that hot cross buns should be eaten cold with butter and never toasted.

I am of the opinion that HOT cross buns should be toasted first and then smothered in butter.

His opinions on hot cross buns, coupled with his shit taste in biscuits are making me question how on earth we have managed 12 seemingly happy years together.

So, in the case of the hot cross buns, who IBU?!

Cold, cold, cold. With salted butter thick enough to leave teeth marks.

MrsDc7 · 31/03/2017 22:45

CHEESE? on a hot cross bun?? CHEESE??

NeverTwerkNaked · 31/03/2017 22:46

I think the key is to sometimes heat them and sometimes eat them cold; that way you can smugly tell everyone you eat a "varied diet"

cheeseandcrackers · 31/03/2017 22:52

Definitely hot, but preferably hot straight from the oven, freshly baked, not toasted.

Tableforjuan · 31/03/2017 23:02

Think it could be a regional variation thing. Was v pleased to be offered one by my MIL (North West based) a few weeks ago; then v alarmed to find it was served cold.

StayAChild · 31/03/2017 23:14

Toasting them loses that squidgy yeastiness and turns them into toasted tea cakes. The cross goes hard too.
Cold all the way with thick salty butter for me.
Unfortunately I've discovered Budgens' chocolate ones. One is never enough.

greenenergy · 31/03/2017 23:18

I agree - hot but also ONLY on Good Friday. Not all year round.

SallyAlbrightsCollegeRoomate · 31/03/2017 23:32

Cold with unreasonably thick, slightly salted butter

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 31/03/2017 23:34

Another great way to have them.is in a bread and butter pudding, but using hot cross buns slathered in butter and marmalade instead.of bread. Mmmm.

RedheadLover · 31/03/2017 23:35

YANBU - I'm surprised at the number of people who think eating hot cross buns cold is okay. I've never even considered it, it just seems wrong.

Surely the clue is in the name - hot cross buns? Confused

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 01/04/2017 02:55

Toasted with a shit tonne of butter is best, cold no butter if I'm grabbing one on the way out of the house or being really lazy
Never ever with cheese, that's just wrong.

MillieMoodle · 01/04/2017 07:28

Quite a varied response then, although I'm going to go with DH being unreasonable still, just because I'm always right possibly slightly less unreasonable than I originally thought. I just can't comprehend a cold cross bun. It's madness.

Yes, definitely under the grill, lashings of butter and then cheese. Amazing!!

MyOtherNameIsTaken · 01/04/2017 08:11

Eaten as soon as they're cool enough straight from the oven with real butter. None of this spreadable malarkey. With a nice large cup of tea. Food of the Gods. ☕️

user1483387154 · 01/04/2017 08:15

Only cold for me, straight from the packet or with butter and jam but never toasted.

ThoraGruntwhistle · 01/04/2017 08:16

Toasted with butter. That is the law.

And another thing. Crumpets are served toasted with butter on, plus jam or honey. Not cheese or Marmite, you maniacs. They are clearly not a savoury item.

MaisyPops · 01/04/2017 08:16

Always toasted with melted butter...

... except if youre having them with cheese. Then its ok to go cold.

SquedgieBeckenheim · 01/04/2017 08:18

Toasted is best although our toaster keeps burning them
Can eat them straight out the pack too.
They're delicious either way!

MaisyPops · 01/04/2017 08:18

Heathen! You sound like my DH. He thinks nutella is an acceptable topping Confused

Crumpets are definitely savory. Butter, cheese or marmite (or marmite then cheese and grilled!) are the best.

Geekmama · 01/04/2017 08:21

Butter on a hot cross bun? NO!!!! I eat them Cold and without butter but I also put water on my cereal as I hate milk.

MumBod · 01/04/2017 08:21

Cold with butter when they're fresh.

Toast them when they're going a bit stale.

PurpleWithRed · 01/04/2017 08:23

They obviously SHOULD be eaten toasted, preferably done on a toasting fork over a wood fire on just the cut side with lashings of butter and a proper pot of tea. However, in a serious emergency cold with butter will do.

You cannot put jam and dried fruit together in a single Baked Good. And yes, that goes for scones too which should be fruitless. Please see earlier threads for the cream/butter debate.

hellokittymania · 01/04/2017 08:27

I am too afraid to touch my toaster as the fire alarm seems to think it's time to go off whenever something is being posted. Grin

Is there any other way to heat them and still have them taste decent?

ThePurpleOneWithTheNut · 01/04/2017 08:27

I like them either way. I also like them with a bit of marmalade on instead of jam. Preferably lemon marmalade.

And I'm def going to look out for the chocolate orange ones mentioned earlier! Grin
