Yes good luck with a) costuming b) explaining c) justifying that one if it's for a primary audience Amber.

No problem with that at all. No harder costume than any of the other victorian females - she was a scientist and the 1st female academic at manchester university. A true pioneer for equality and womens rights.

If it was me I would send them as the people of the Empire which got shat on from a great height. But fortunately it's not Grin. They're going to love me when my kids start school.

Lingotria · 30/03/2017 19:52

Technically colonisation made 'Great Britain'. My dsd has a similar event to foster 'citizenship' and she's going to dress up as a munshi from Queen Victoria's court.

Helen Sharman. The first Brit in space Smile. Some tin foil and a few cereal boxes for the costume.

BloddersMum · 30/03/2017 19:55

Sorry... Dr Helen Sharman!

Kit30 · 30/03/2017 19:57

Girl coal miner ( they did exist!) Good if you're in Wales, Scotland and Lancashire! Lots of images online.

BikeRunSki · 30/03/2017 19:58

Vivienne Westwood would be cool

Graphista · 30/03/2017 20:15

Colonialism (and I speak as an Irish Scot so not a fan Grin) yes contributed greatly to britains wealth and influence but so did Britons who didn't/wouldn't have supported such behaviour including colonised Brits!

Boiing · 30/03/2017 20:18

Factory workers in Victorian age!

BillSykesDog · 30/03/2017 20:18

Thatcher. Blue dress. Old handbag. Go crazy with the Ellnet. Sorted.

BillSykesDog · 30/03/2017 20:22

Actually in seriousness, how about a Bletchley Park codebreaker?

WildwestWind · 30/03/2017 20:26

Is the school expecting Ofsted and don't feel they have done enough work on British Values?
Sounds like 'tick a box' day to me

Nomorechickens · 30/03/2017 20:29

I was going to suggest Thatcher too. It would probably wind up most of the teachers but they wouldn't be able to say anything. Wig and a handbag, easy costume.
I'm impressed by the number of people making suggestions based on worthiness rather than ease of getting a costume together. Although scientist, white coat, can probably be reused several times for various costumes...

Crumbs1 · 30/03/2017 20:29

A bit of a worrying theme which smacks of colonialism and Empire. If I had to,saynthem Nicholas Winterton, Mary Seacole, Fleming, Jenner.

Alconleigh · 30/03/2017 20:50

Good to see the curriculum has gone full Brexit already.....

Graphista · 30/03/2017 20:50

Mine were worthy AND had easy-ish costumes included Smile

Graphista · 30/03/2017 20:50

Another problem with thatcher - there may be a few!

Leeds2 · 30/03/2017 20:57

White sports kit and a tennis racket for either Virginia Wade or Andy Murray.

Tracksuit and a "number" for Jess Ennis. Or Daley Thompson/Linford Christie/Kelly Holmes/Greg Rutherford.
