Women worked in the mines until some ridiculous grandee mp banned them. They continued to work with coal on the surface. Arguably the biggest driver of wealth in this country

CheWasABitOfAHomophobe · 30/03/2017 18:54

Brunel?

Gingernaut · 30/03/2017 19:00

George Stephenson - inventor of the first steam locomotive.

TheProblemOfSusan · 30/03/2017 19:01

I wouldn't be able to help myself. My child would be going as Ted Heath, draped in an EU flag, regardless of gender.

What a jingoistic topic to choose.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 30/03/2017 19:05

I know you have a dd but Thomas Telford would be easy. Him of the amazing bridges and aqueducts.

SilverDragonfly1 · 30/03/2017 19:12

MrsDustyBusty · 30/03/2017 19:26

The total ledge who couldn't burn the EU flag.

Graphista · 30/03/2017 19:28

Scientists - white lab coat, toy microscope, clipboard

Activists - period costume, sash with cause on

We have also produced amazing war reporters, lawyers, explorers & adventurers, sports women, soldiers, engineers, inventors...

Justanothernameonthepage · 30/03/2017 19:31

Ada Lovelace, Mary Anning, Aphra Behn, various queens, JK Rowling ?

I love this. Grin

If someone has a son, they should go as PG Wodehouse. Or William Blake. Or Dr Johnson. Or William Shakespeare.

For a girl, there's Margo Fonteyn. Or one of the Brontes. Or Betty Boothroyd. Or Mary Shelley. Or someone like Octavia Hill. Or Beatrix Potter.

AndKnowItsSeven · 30/03/2017 19:34

Please tell me that was sarcasm AllTheBest

As a German, the only thing I think made Britain great were the suffragettes.

Miners and farmers may have made Britain wealthy, but it is not something I am particularly impressed with. We have agriculture and coal mines in Germany, too.

Jane Austen and Shakespeare ... perhaps, though I am more impressed with them as individuals then as British citizens.

And I would steer very far away from soldiers unless you can make it explicit that the soldier is one of WWII who fought the nazis.

VestalVirgin · 30/03/2017 19:38

(Yes, soldiers made Britain larger but I doubt this was meant by "great")

Potentialpoochowner · 30/03/2017 19:40

Punk rock

Ripped jeans with safety pins and chains (Wickes will be your friend), plain shirt (or patterned one turned inside out) with sleeves ripped off and anarchy sign painted on in fabric paint (hobby craft). Wig, or strong hair gel and spray in dye for red 'liberty' spikes if you're going for the real deal. My six year old did this for brilliant Britain day and he ROCKED!

ActuallyThatsSUPREMECommander · 30/03/2017 19:43

Flora McDonald or Grace Darling would be fun. I don't think they do them in school anymore but they're cracking stories.

I think you need to go through your wardrobe and work from there because most of these would be absolute sods to costume. Suffragette probably the easiest, or maybe land girl or Florence Nightingale (or Mary Seacole depending on ethnicity).

And can I add JK Rowling for Great Briton? (tricky to costume but you could bring the books as props).

Tripadvisor's clientele clearly agrees with me m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_58d2cecae4b02d33b74806e6

Yes good luck with a) costuming b) explaining c) justifying that one if it's for a primary audience Amber.

Graphista · 30/03/2017 19:47

Vestal that's sad you think so, that would be a bit like Brits thinking the only influential Germans were Karl Marx, nazis and Angela merkel!

When you have produced such amazing people as:
Gertrud arndt
The hans holbeins
Martin Luther
Johanes Gutenberg
Marlene Dietrich
Bach, Beethoven and Brahms...
