To feel my childhood was a lie: Do YOU know the Birthday Bunny?

DD's birthday is looming and we're in the process of sorting out what we might get her as a gift.

There's one thing that she's particularly excited by, and we've just had a conversation about it in front of DH, at the end of which I said 'well maybe we'll have a word with the Birthday Bunny and see what happens for your birthday.'

My DH is now looking at me like I'm a lunatic.

In our house growing up the Birthday Bunny was like Father Christmas. When it was time for presents he was the one who got the memo (although we didn't write to him, just mentioned what we'd like to Mum who then passed the details on, I always assumed by phone).

I don't remember when I realised my parents were buying the gifts but it wasn't a big reveal or surprise. But the Birthday Bunny was still referred to.

Except DH has never heard of him, and now I've Googled it turns out apart from a slightly racy Urban Dictionary listing he doesn't exist.

Is this a geographical thing? Or did my Mum totally make it up and I never realised? I'm almost 40 and I won't lie, I feel like my life has been a lie. I'm also now thinking I might have to dial back the Birthday Bunny chat before everyone starts looking at DD like she's a loon too...

Have YOU heard of the Birthday Bunny?!

No, but I know the Birthday Fairy...

Pikmin · 29/03/2017 20:15

Present fairy here, a handy one stop shop for all occasions. Has been known to smuggle gifts into son's sock drawer for him to give to me, she chooses well 😁

cheminotte · 29/03/2017 20:17

Gus Honeybun! He starred on Gus Honeybun's magic birthdays, and was part of my Devon childhood.

He has a Wikipedia entry...

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 29/03/2017 20:29

For me it was the Easter Bunny and The birthday Fairies

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 29/03/2017 20:31

I spent half of my childhood living in Devon, and daily, monday to friday, there was a 5 min show with a Bunny who youd send birthday cards to... and bunny would wish you a happy birhtday...
,.. thats the only birhtday bunny i know!

Slydiad · 29/03/2017 20:36

I've never heard of a birthday bunny. Birthday presents for us were from a person (usually parents). It sounds nice, though. There's nothing wrong with populating a child's world with friendly mythological creatures while they are still young enough to enjoy them.

We had the Treasure Fairy, who would occasionally leave small random gifts around the house for us to find. When my parents send me a package for non-birthday, non-holiday reasons, it still sometimes comes "from the Treasure Fairy." I'm 35! Grin

twinklehickorymoomoo · 29/03/2017 20:37

Birthday fairy here too!!!

Preggocinders · 29/03/2017 20:37

We grew up with the birthday fairy bringing our gifts, and would hang hundreds of
drawings of our favourite characters on string from the ceiling. All hand drawn and lovingly coloured in. I remember being greeted by a hundred swinging Mr blobbys one year.

My mum is bloody awesome.

NormHonal · 29/03/2017 20:38

Yes Gus Honeybun!

OdinsLoveChild · 29/03/2017 20:39

I've heard of it as a Mum at school referred to it recently and I looked at her like she had gone completely insane . She is from Somerset and I believe its local to the south western area of the UK as another Mum hailing form Bristol also mentioned it.

Oddly it was the 11th year the birthday bunny had visited the child but he had stopped believing in Father Christmas around 3 years ago Shock

987flowers · 29/03/2017 20:41

Birthday fairy here as well!! No bunnies!

Yoyoyopo · 29/03/2017 20:43

Omg Gus Hunnybun!

Sure someone has identified him already but he was THE birthday bunny going down with basil brush n spit the dog as a furry hand up the bum icon of my youth!

SparklyUnicornPoo · 29/03/2017 20:44

DD (8) asked me why the birthday bunny never visited her so it must be a thing with her friends, but I'd never heard of him before that.

SpreadYourHappiness · 29/03/2017 20:48

Never heard of the birthday bunny and neither has DH.

Birthday presents were always straight from the person who bought the gift.

salemtheteenagecat · 29/03/2017 20:49

Yep birthday bunny very much exists!!!! ....maybe a north east thing?

Weedsnseeds1 · 29/03/2017 20:50

Gus Honeybun, he was on TV South West. I have a vague feeling Fern Brittan used to operate him in her youth!
