To feel my childhood was a lie: Do YOU know the Birthday Bunny?

DD's birthday is looming and we're in the process of sorting out what we might get her as a gift.

There's one thing that she's particularly excited by, and we've just had a conversation about it in front of DH, at the end of which I said 'well maybe we'll have a word with the Birthday Bunny and see what happens for your birthday.'

My DH is now looking at me like I'm a lunatic.

In our house growing up the Birthday Bunny was like Father Christmas. When it was time for presents he was the one who got the memo (although we didn't write to him, just mentioned what we'd like to Mum who then passed the details on, I always assumed by phone).

I don't remember when I realised my parents were buying the gifts but it wasn't a big reveal or surprise. But the Birthday Bunny was still referred to.

Except DH has never heard of him, and now I've Googled it turns out apart from a slightly racy Urban Dictionary listing he doesn't exist.

Is this a geographical thing? Or did my Mum totally make it up and I never realised? I'm almost 40 and I won't lie, I feel like my life has been a lie. I'm also now thinking I might have to dial back the Birthday Bunny chat before everyone starts looking at DD like she's a loon too...

Have YOU heard of the Birthday Bunny?!

OP posts:

Gus Honeybun! He was the one doing hops for birthdays but I only saw him when we were in Devon. But no gifts, crossed wires with the easter bunny maybe?

mumeeee · 29/03/2017 19:27

No never heard of the Birthday Bunny.

Scribblegirl · 29/03/2017 19:28

Sorry mate. This looks like a unanimous AIBU Grin

Cute though!

ElizaDontlittle · 29/03/2017 19:28

We had a birthday fairy borne out of my mother being sarcastic about my father not knowing what was in most of our presents I think! but she just put all the presents on the dining table in the middle of the night. And I can't remember ever not knowing it was actually mum.

Jakadaal · 29/03/2017 19:28

We have Birthday Bunny which DH introduced to our dc. They are now young teens and still refer to 'asking Birthday bunny' for presents even though they know it's not real Wink I find it quite sweet

Scribblegirl · 29/03/2017 19:29

Tbf I think my parents were pissed about not being able to claim credit for Christmas presents, they'd have imploded if they couldn't get points for the birthday gifts as well!

Wigeon · 29/03/2017 19:30

Nope, no birthday bunny here (grew up in Suffolk and Bedfordshire).

TroysMammy · 29/03/2017 19:31

The only Birthday Bunny I know of is Gus Honeybun. He had a programme where someone read out birthday greetings and he would give thumps of his feet. This was in the late 70's/early 80's on either BBC or ITV west. I used to watch it when I visited my grandparents. They only lived 5 miles away and they had BBC west and we had BBC Wales. Telefant and Bilidowcar were such a disappointment.

FruSkogKattOla · 29/03/2017 19:31

Sorry. But, no, no Birthday Bunny for me either. As PPs have said, it was probably something lovely and creative your mum did for you!

BumpGoesBumpety · 29/03/2017 19:35

Do you work at a nursery? A member of staff suggested toys for us for the Birthday Bunny to get... I thought she was a loon but was too polite to say it, so potentially at least one other person in the world outside of your family knows of this mythical bunny.

user1483387154 · 29/03/2017 19:37

Nope, only heard of the Easter Bunny not a birthday bunny.

chastenedButStillSmiling · 29/03/2017 19:39

Ha ha ha ha.

Sorry, Wombat, I've not heard of this either, and my mum's bonkers. I love it, though. You should def keep it going.

p.s. I wonder if Jakadaal's DH is Wombat's DBro???? Grin

StartledByHisFurryShorts · 29/03/2017 19:43

It's a Birthday Bird, sorry OP.

Well according to Dr Seuss, it is:

My parents took full credit for birthday presents though. We didn't have any truck with the Easter Bunny though and considered it loony American nonsense.

Father Christmas and the Tooth Fairy were (and, of course, still are) totally real, though.

Jakadaal · 29/03/2017 19:45

Have to say wombat DHs family are a bit potty but I've become so used to the idea that I just assumed everyone knew about Birthday Bunny!

salbobalbo · 29/03/2017 19:49

The Birthday Bunny used to visit my family too! You are not alone Grin

LuxuryWoman2017 · 29/03/2017 19:49

Birthday fairy here.
I mean I'm not actually the birthday fairy but she helps out at celebration time.

I mean of course it is me that is the birthday fairy but nobody else knows. Or they humour me at least. Do you see what I mean?

Bunny comes at Easter.

frazzled3ds · 29/03/2017 19:50

StillNo - yup that's the one! Not that I ever lived in the West Country, but my parents did have a booster aerial that meant we could pick up their local TV from across the water in SW Wales. I did once have a relationship with someone who was known by the same name as that rabbit, but different spelling of the surname...... still makes me smirk slightly!

ClaryBeanHorshAndMe · 29/03/2017 19:51

Nope.

Easter Bunny, St. Nicholas, Christmas Child.

Oh, and the tooth fairy.

OhHolyFuck · 29/03/2017 19:54

WE HAVE THE BIRTHDAY BUNNY!!!!

Sorry, I'm just so excited to 'meet' other people that do too! I didn't realise it wasn't a common thing until I was in secondary school! And now I make my DSs believe 😂

Emlorn · 29/03/2017 19:55

Never heard of the birthday bunny either, sorry. But if you like the idea, and dh is on board why not carry on the tradition? Dd (11) asked me today if I was going to do the 'quiz' for her at Easter? "What quiz?" says I. You know mom, the clues to find my Easter eggs! Ds (2) is listening eagerly. 'Oh, you mean the hunt the Easter bunny arranges?!" She knows it's not true, she knows I don't really email Father Christmas her wish list, and that me and Violet (the tooth fairy!) don't have a catch up and a natter about dental hygiene. BUT it was all an important part of her childhood, we had a lot of fun with it all, and she'll help us continue it with Ds. Your life wasn't a lie, it just sounds like you have a lovely (and bloody creative) mom!

Lemonnaise · 29/03/2017 19:56

No Birthday bunny for me either.

Wrcgirl · 29/03/2017 19:56

We have birthday fairies 😊 Courtesy of grandma

elQuintoConyo · 29/03/2017 19:58

Birthday Beaver? GrinGrin i'm dying!

We have FC for Christmas day, a log that shits gifts Christmas Eve, the Easter Bunny and a mouse called Perez who does the Tooth Fairy's job.

The Birthday Bunny does sound adorable though *:=

Vanillaradio · 29/03/2017 20:00

Birthday fairy for me too. She didn't bring presents though she just fluttered into the room to grant your wish when you blew out the candles!

Roomba · 29/03/2017 20:01

Nope, never heard of the birthday bunny sorry!
