I'm needing to speak to someone in the states soon and I'm sure it will turn to the trump topic. Not sure what he politics are but:

Feminist
Has all daughters
Gay married child (to an immigrant)
British Immigrant
Working in education
Military/services in the family

So what could the discussions be? I need a crib note as I can't keep up with the madness...

blueskyinmarch · 31/03/2017 07:50

Gingerivy. I got that info from mainstream news. BBC and CNN.

"It's a child's desk," said Pres Trump of the table provided for the bill signings. "It's the smallest desk I've ever seen," he complained

Is he worried that people will associate a small desk with a small penis?

7Days · 31/03/2017 07:57

That is exactly my fear too painintheear . The American electorate has lost the capacity to be shocked.

CaveMum · 31/03/2017 07:59

This quote from the BBCs article on Flynn wanting immunity:

"
At last summer's Republican party convention, Mr Flynn led chants of "lock her up" aimed at Hillary Clinton over her private email server.

In September, he said in a TV interview it was unacceptable that some of the Democratic candidate's aides had been granted immunity from prosecution.

"When you get given immunity that means you've probably committed a crime," he told NBC News."

How poetic!

bluesky cool - I'll go check their sites - not seeing it on Twitter at all, which is odd.

GingerIvy · 31/03/2017 08:23

Nope, sorry - Flynn is everything. Nothing on CNN or BBC that I can see about Paul Ryan. I'll just keep my eyes open.

GingerIvy · 31/03/2017 08:23

Flynn is everyWHERE. typo.

blue are you sure you're not confusing Flynn and Ryan? Can you link?

I heard them talk about Flynn on R4 this morning and almost did a little happy dance. I imagine there will be some back and forth before they agree terms on his immunity request. I'm pretty sure they don't give that sort of thing out on first request without being sure they will be their money's worth. Grin

blueskyinmarch · 31/03/2017 08:33

Ok - I apologise - it was my mistake it is FLYNN not RYAN. Serves me right for posting when i have just woken up. Got you all in a right old fluster there though!!!! Grin

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 31/03/2017 08:35

I can't at anything about Ryan either - just Flynn as ginger says.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 31/03/2017 08:37

Sorry, x post!

blueskyinmarch · 31/03/2017 09:00

I think we call that alternative truth!

PausingFlatly · 31/03/2017 09:11

She really articulates my fear for what happens next: regardless of what happens to Trump, the norms we thought immutable have been shattered and people now tolerate much more shady dealings than they did before. It will be a challenge to challenge the newly accepted lower standards and go back to being shocked about corruption, nepotism and criminality.

And this. Sad

PausingFlatly · 31/03/2017 09:37

That Indy article about Tillerson and huge cuts to the State Department (linked by Ginger above) makes perfect sense. Right down to him ignoring staff.

45's administration is simply replicating the norm in tinpot countries with not-very-democratic rulers who surround themselves with family and cronies.

The department of foreign affairs - ie the State Department in the US - becomes irrelevant. Nothing can get done without the ruling family's say-so: so if you want that deal, you always bypass the department and go straight to the ruling family.

So what point would there be for the country to have such a department? Or for anyone in the administration to talk to them?

Deejoda · 31/03/2017 10:00

Could Flynn be the man we've been praying for?Smile

BoreOfWhabylon · 31/03/2017 10:05

Well, this is all sounding very encouraging!

And here's lovely Trevor Noah

cozietoesie · 31/03/2017 10:33

7 et al. I'd wait and see - re the Aftermath. It looks as if the bar has lowered - which it has - and might stay lowered - which it might not. People forget that there is a very strong tradition in the States, especially, of 'the sinner come to repentance'. In the same way, there can be wholesale shifts over - say - 10 or 20 years in public attitudes.

I think that there will certainly be a reaction to all of this but precisely what it might be, I hesitate to guess.

Stay strong. Persist.

BiglyBadgers · 31/03/2017 10:53

I agree cozie things shift so fast no that there is no way of knowing what the future will look like after Trump leaves or how people will react. It is truly an unknown and all we can do is prepare as best we can. I saw this William Gibson quote somewhere the other day and your post reminded me of it.

“We have no idea, now, of who or what the inhabitants of our future might be. In that sense, we have no future. Not in the sense that our grandparents had a future, or thought they did. Fully imagined cultural futures were the luxury of another day, one in which 'now' was of some greater duration. For us, of course, things can change so abruptly, so violently, so profoundly, that futures like our grandparents' have insufficient 'now' to stand on. We have no future because our present is too volatile. ... We have only risk management. The spinning of the given moment's scenarios. Pattern recognition”
― William Gibson, Pattern Recognition

Trevor Noah is wonderful. Thanks for that link, Bore. Smile
