Depends. Do you know where the other religious leaders were born? It's interesting anyway, and well worth the effort to know. What made you aware? have you any conclusions?

I do know the birth place of Jesus, even though I am not religious. I was brought up going to church, and every Christmas story and some Christmas songs mention Bethlehem.

Nothing wrong with knowing or not knowing either, in my opinion.

If you're Muslim then yes you should know, if not then I cant see that you would be unreasonable to be unaware, although I think its good to know about other religions. Did someone suggest you were unreasonable for not knowing that?

Personally, not being religious, I neither know nor care. Although, of course, anyone who follows the religion is perfectly welcome to know.

Well the name of the place (Mecca) has entered common use to mean a place which is sought out or a pinnacle of something or other. (A Mecca for bargain hunters for example)
It's not unreasonable to not know where that expression comes from though, unless you are Muslim or well acquainted with Muslim people why would you?

YANBU. Religions are all just made up nonsense. None of this should be taught in schools. Kids should not be told about Jesus or Mohammed. I teach my kids that religion is the root cause of most wars and suffering, and that all religions are equally riduclous. Then we teach scientific fact.

It's on the news every year at the time of the hajj. Certain I've seen quite a bit about it as huge numbers make a pilgrimage there every year.

I would certainly be extremely surprised if anyone I knew didn't know about Mecca. It would indicate to me that you didn't watch/read/listen to the news or have much knowledge of the world.

YANBU, OP. People can place as much importance on religion as they wish, but they really don't get to insist that others should deem it important enough that not knowing the birthplace of someone important in a religion is a major failing.

I know about Mecca and happily chat with Muslim colleagues about their pilgrimages etc. I didn't know it was his birthplace though.

I guess, with a gun to my head and a demand for an answer, it's the place I'd have come up with (for lack of any other option).

Not joking now. I really didn't know about Mecca, and its relevance. But reading about Islam and their profit Muhammad 3 wife's, with the last being a 6 year old child is shocking

Hang on with your condemnation. I'm no fan of Islam in many ways but the 6 yo wife... Richard II married a 7yo - Isabella of France. That was almost a millennium later. These child brides were often for dynastic reasons and weren't consummated for many years.

He was born in Mecca.
He was buried in Medina.
Both in Saudi Arabia.
