AIBU to let four year old DS drink some of my Koppaburg?

I know this sounds so unreasonable, but I feel so sleep deprived and I think I'm going crazy. My DS has been up for three nights now, he just doesn't sleep for more than four hours and never naps. My mum says to give him a little tipple to help him. Eyeing up my bottle of Koppaburg and wondering if I should give him a little sip? I literally don't know what else to do to get him to sleep

Sorry - i see you put in the thread title he is 4! If that is all he sleeps on a regular basis you need to seek professional advice and help.

GlitterGlue · 25/03/2017 14:01

God no, I thought you were going to ask if it was ok to let children have a tiny taste, not give them half a cider to help them sleep. Speak to the health visitor and doctor. It's not normal, but there is help out there.

Berrypurple · 25/03/2017 14:02

Are prescription drugs really better than alcohol though?

Confused yes! One is given by medical professionals and has doses, of course it's better Confused

WorraLiberty · 25/03/2017 14:03

OP, are you going to answer any of the points raised?

DonkeyOaty · 25/03/2017 14:04

Mary. You're on your knees. Any chance of him going to your Mum's tonight to give you a break? Maybe not though as she might try it.. anyone else - where's his Dad in all this?

hoddtastic · 25/03/2017 14:04

he's in bad habits, without underlying problems (assuming this has all been investigated?) you need to tire him out a lot during the day and keep putting him back to bed- do not give him alcohol FGS.

Reow · 25/03/2017 14:05

Melatonin

Itsjustaphase84 · 25/03/2017 14:08

What's his bedtime routine like? The number of children with sleep issues is on the increase. Has his routine changed?

thatcatpigeon · 25/03/2017 14:08

YABVU (and really dumb). Firstly alcohol is worse than prescription drugs because a childs body treats the alcohol as poison - it can't be processed by their immature liver/kidneys, so not a great idea & your DM is spouting outdated and dangerous bollocks.

Prescription or OTC drugs may help but a visit to your GP and a referral to work out the underlying cause would be a better idea.

Lastly alcohol doesn't make you sleep well. A drunk adult my pass out but is far more likely to have disturbed or poor quality sleep throughout the night, so a pointless exercise regardless. Hmm

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 25/03/2017 14:10

What a stupid question

NapQueen · 25/03/2017 14:10

He is 4yo so he doesnt need naps so really I think just focus on night time sleeps.

What is his daily routine? How much exercise is he getting? What are his sleep crutches (you there/telly on/teddy to cuddle)? What is his bedtime routine? How do you tackle night wakings?

SpreadYourHappiness · 25/03/2017 14:10

You are very irresponsible for even considering this. Absolutely do NOT give your child alcohol.

I can't believe the stuff people come out with.

NapQueen · 25/03/2017 14:11

And no. Dont fucking give him alcohol. Or drugs.

Clnz4fun · 25/03/2017 14:12

A taste isn't the end of the world op but you are suggesting actually giving your child enough to make them go to sleep.

I couldn't in all conscience do it to my child even at six. Was fun and games to stop her grabbing the brandy at 2 when she snuck a finger dip and happened to like the tasteBlush

If your gonna do something then call the gp and if you can get someone to take him for a few hours to give you some rest.

My sympathies though, sleep deprivation is torture.

Thattimeofyearagain · 25/03/2017 14:13

Medised or piraton.

DramaAlpaca · 25/03/2017 14:14

Please tell us you are joking, right?

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 25/03/2017 14:15

Why doesn't offer to have him so you can sleep instead of offering this stupid and dangerous suggestion?

5moreminutes · 25/03/2017 14:16

Extreme sleep deprivation can really change your mental state and make you desperate.

Melatonin occurs naturally in the body and it's worth taking him to the doctor, being very clear how extreme his sleep problem is and the effect it's having on you, and asking for melatonin or a sleep clinic referral.

Melatonin won't keep him asleep though unfortunately, only help with going to sleep if he's not falling asleep until the early hours for example.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 25/03/2017 14:16

doesn't your mum

watchoutformybutt · 25/03/2017 14:17

What's wrong with you? Confused I thought this must be a joke but apparently not..

SparkleTwinkleGoldGlitter · 25/03/2017 14:18

I don't think giving the child alcohol to make him sleep is the answer and common sense should tell you not too really

Do you have a dh/dp? A friend that could have him for a few hours?

Take him to the park and let him run round like crazy?
Drop his day naps? Does he really need a day nap at 4? Surely that could prevent him sleeping at night

randomer · 25/03/2017 14:19

every sympathy but long term this isnt going to help.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 25/03/2017 14:19

Can you ask your mum for actual help? Giving him booze is a terrible idea.

ILiveForNachos · 25/03/2017 14:20

If your sleep deprivation is so bad that you think this is normal question to ask go get help from your GP before you do you or your child some real harm......

ButtMuncher · 25/03/2017 14:21

This can't be real. Seriously. I know sleep deprivation. It's shit and I don't know how
I'm still functioning but fuck me, alcohol? I wouldn't even let my 7 year old DSS try some.
