Minimalist wedding dresses

I am engaged and looking for a wedding dress. I really like the look of "minimalist" wedding dresses but wonder if they're too plain? Obviously don't want to ask my fiancé as would want the dress to be a surprise for him and my bridesmaids seem a bit underwhelmed when I show them what I'm looking at. I'm a size 10 if that's relevant and 5'5". If you saw a bride in something like this would you think it looked elegant and good or just boring? Honest opinions please!

They are beautiful. I was absolutely set on something similar, maybe a little more Grecian in style, then when I tried things on I ended up with totally the opposite, and loved it, so I recommend just going and trying on with an open mind, you might be surprised Grin

WafflingVersatile · 24/03/2017 22:22

I had a dress like this but with a "belt" to cinch in my waist. Loved the simplicity of it. I ordered it from Bloomingdales to the UK and luckily it fit me. Although I could have had it altered if it hadn't!

WafflingVersatile · 24/03/2017 22:28

Shoes didn't work...

Lovely, classic & elegant. The second one is stunning
Have fun trying them on, I only looked and put on one dress and that was it, perfect for me, but wish I had had the fun of trying on lots!

eurochick · 24/03/2017 22:29

Lovely! I had a plain and simple dress too. No regrets!

ArriettyClock1 · 24/03/2017 22:29

I love all 3 of those dresses.

My dress was a very plain Grecian column style, in fact, it was called Athena by the designer. It was sleeveless, fitted and with a very low back and pearl buttons beneath.

No veil and a simple white bouquet.

I am not a fan of big fussy dresses or lace, and really hate strapless, so it suited me perfectly.

GemmaB78 · 24/03/2017 22:30

They are lovely! Mine (hanging upstairs - 12 weeks to go.....) is similarly simple, though has a small amount of bling. My usual style is very simple - very preppy - so it's perfect for me :-)

Wear what YOU want. Not what you think other people would like.

CoolCarrie · 24/03/2017 22:31

Love that bouquet, stunning and you can keep it as a heirloom

TinklyLittleLaugh · 24/03/2017 22:32

Really elegant and classy. Everything has to be immaculate though to carry it off: your figure, your make up, your hair.

CoolCarrie · 24/03/2017 22:33

Have a lovely day GemmaB78!

Kahlua4me · 24/03/2017 22:40

I had a minimalist/simple dress and loved it, still do actually and don't regret the style at all.

I had mine made as couldn't find anything I liked. It was lined in silk so as to flow better over my lumps and bumps!

theyearofthekitty · 24/03/2017 22:41

I love minimalist dresses, so elegant! As other posters have said there are also slightly more forgiving minimalist styles around if you don't feel comfortable in something super clingy. I really like shorter dresses and am looking for something similar to the pictures above for my own wedding.

I love that look. I'm not sure how I feel about messages telling you that you'll need a certain figure/accessories/styling to 'pull it off' - it's your day and the only important thing re: the dress is how you feel in it. Go for the dress that makes you feel stunning regardless of what everybody else thinks. You only get to do this once (hopefully! Wink )

Bue · 24/03/2017 22:43

It's a beautiful style and won't date nearly as quickly as something blingy. Not underselling the bride at all! You can also go in so many different directions if you want a veil.

Foureyesarebetterthantwo · 24/03/2017 22:47

I went for something fairly streamlined in shape and absolutely loved it. I found that lots of the sparkly dresses in the expensive shops didn't look so good close up, they had big jewels and sparkly stuff everywhere and actually looked quite blingy, same with nets/huge skirts, I just didn't feel like me in those dresses. I felt elegant and it wasn't too plain. I agree with everyone who says try on all kinds and see what you like.

DiamondIntRuff · 24/03/2017 22:47

It's pretty, but not my cup of tea tbh. I would prefer something that stands out, that I could look back on in photos and show my grandchildren to show them what a special day it was. But I am a show off, if you like it that's all that matters!

previously1474etc · 24/03/2017 22:50

It is a look that you can dress up if you wish. There are some lovely dresses available but equally there are many more that are terribly over-done. Those are elegant and timeless.
The dresses are beautiful and can be worn with confidence. They make a statement.

(I hate bling and frills)

Scholes34 · 24/03/2017 22:52

Simple, yes, but those styles are too clingy.

Foureyesarebetterthantwo · 24/03/2017 22:54

I would prefer something that stands out I really felt I stood out on my wedding day, it was more the silhouette that was simple, the fabrics themselves were luxurious. You will always stand out being the one wearing the white (or other colour) dress! I didn't bother with carrying flowers either, again, just not for me. I did have fancy hair and lovely make-up and ace shoes. It's about finding what you want, I love looking at my wedding photos and my size 8 figure

planetclom · 24/03/2017 22:57

The third picture looked like a foundation garment Showing my age GrinI like plainer styles

OwlinaTree · 24/03/2017 23:04

They are beautiful. Do try on all types of dress though. Me and other friends ended up with totally different styles to what we thought we wanted so keep an open mind!

haveacupoftea · 24/03/2017 23:14

Those dresses are lovely, much nicer than the horrible massive dresses you see a lot of people wearing - most look swamped in them.

Bubblysqueak · 24/03/2017 23:16

Very elegant but you won't know til you've tried one on. That style made my ass look huge!

jcscot · 25/03/2017 00:07

I wore a simple, plain dress for my wedding - it had a traditional full skirt, was made of matte, heavy satin, had bracelet length sleeves and a (just) off-the-shoulder neckline. It was rather like the two shorter dresses pictured above in style, but full length. My mother made it for me and she was worried that it was too plain - no beading or embroidery or frills at all and this was in 2000 at the height of the corseted, blingtastic trend. She thought it was beautiful on the day and it hasn't "aged" or dated quite the same!

My hair and veil were equally simple.
