South-North Differences

I've recently moved and so far everyone I've met is scared of the capital "because of all the crime and terrorism", is on the right of the political spectrum, a 'loose' Christian, thinks being vegetarian is weird, vegan is impossible and stupid, husbands are useless at childcare and cleaning because it's for women, etc etc

I'm not saying I think different views are wrong... each to their own! I just feel terribly out of place. Everyone seems so cookie cutter up here Confused

AIBU to hold out hope that It is just the people I've met and there are people up here with other views?

@Happyfeet1972 can you please let me which suburb that is? (Highest sales of Guardian in Manchester) I'd like to move there please ;)

I am a southerner who has lived up north (north east) for more than10 years. In the south (south west where I come from) people frequently get called 'luv' (okay my luv?) and 'sweetheart'. Just as they often are referred to as 'pet' or 'duck' in the north. Using familiar terms of endearment is definitely not unique to the north!
There are parts of the south where people are happy and friendly, not suspicious of each other and happily engage in conversation at the bus stops with complete strangers just as they do in the north. London is full of pretentious twats and so are many northern cities, sweeping generalisations between the north and south are pointless and ignorant.

MooCahnt Good guess. No not Chapel Allerton but very near. Less than 5 mins away by car. I think the nice veggie place in CA is either closed or closing :(

MooCahnt · 26/03/2017 22:45

Ah, I can guess, but won't say anything more :) Wink

TheHouseOfIllRepute · 27/03/2017 09:56

Lancashire and Yorkshire are the Midlands
Hmm Yeah right. I dare you to spend a day telling people that. In person

coldcanary · 27/03/2017 12:55

Manchester is the Midlands? Right so the government, the met office, the news agencies etc are wrong when they refer to it as being in the NW then? Ok..

I live in the North but have not come across such backwards wankery. I guess I do live in a city though. Does that change things?

I have UKIP voting racist family members, people who think vegetarianism (and any dietary alteration from 90% lard) is weird, people who think children should be beaten, women shouldn't work, we should vote Leave to 'send 'em all home', some refuse to work, one is in jail.

I don't call it 'a Northern thing'. I say I have weird family members.

I live in Gateshead just along the road from the Angel. I work in Newcastle. Husband was a southerner but came to the north to work back in the 80s and never went back. It is a great and beautiful place to live but not as cheap as you might imagine depending on where you live. Our council tax, for example is much higher than the poshest areas of London. As another poster said, there is still much hilarious stereotyping of the north. We had a visitor at work last week who, when I asked if he would like a tea or coffee, produced a couple of tea bags from his jacket pocket. When I asked if they were anything special he said - "oh yes, you could only get these if you had a store called Waitrose". Grin I kid you not. Seeing we were within strolling distance of one of the many branches of Waitrose. Not that I am saying that the vicinity of a W. is a necessity of life. Other supermarkets can be mentioned.
