Was Carrie Bradshaw BU?

So, there's an episode of Sex and the City where Carrie goes to a baby shower/ party (baby already born, just adults and cocktails).

Her friend makes her take off her shoes (Manolo, I think) even though she doesn't want to, and at the end of the night the shoes are missing.

Anyway, a few days later Carrie returns to drop the shoes she borrowed to go home in, and her friend offers to pay for them.

Carrie reveals that the shoes were $485 dollars (and this is like, 2002, so probably about £500 now) and the friend refuses to pay for them, offering $200 instead, and then saying that she shouldn't have to pay for Carrie's 'extravagant' lifestyle.

Carrie then gets really pissed off and creates a fake wedding registry for the shoes.

So, I was watching it the other night and I wanted to know what AIBU would make of it. Should the friend have paid for the shoes? Or was Carrie BU to expect five hundred quid shoes to be replaced?

I can't believe I'm saying this, but she was nbu.

NoncommittalToSparkleMotion · 20/03/2017 19:53

I remember this one!

Swnbu. Her friend was really judgy through the whole thing that could have been avoided if people were allowed to keep their shoes on.

And I wasn't a Carrie fan.

At some pint Miranda points out Carrie has spent an apartment downpayment on shoes. But she was not unreasonable, her friend made no effort to recover the shows.

Trills · 20/03/2017 20:08

That was about the only time Carrie WASN'T completely unreasonable!

I agree with ToastDemon

Cheekyandfreaky · 20/03/2017 20:21

Swnbu that time BUT swsobloodyu when she basically emotionally blackmailed Charlotte into giving up her old engagement ring because Carrie wanted an apartment and spent all her money on shoes or some crap- that still makes me so mad.

worriedmum100 · 20/03/2017 20:24

I've just watched the episode with Nina "the face girl" Katz. Carries is particularly self obsessed in that one. Love it when Stanford calls her out on it.

Moanyoldcow · 20/03/2017 21:01

ToastDemon has got the right of it. Carrie is a cunt from the get go but in this instance she was DNBU.

ithakabythesea · 20/03/2017 21:11

Yup, adding to the chorus of Carrie not being unreasonable, for once in her whiny self obsessed life Grin

shakemysilliesout · 20/03/2017 21:23

But Carrie made out that the shoes were a wedding present to her in the end, but then got married a few yrs later, did the friend get invited to her wedding?? Probably not after the shoe thing.

The Charlotte ring thing was ridiculous. CB needs to grow up.

Patriciathestripper1 · 20/03/2017 21:27

Loved all of sex in the city. And the films.
She was NBU at all.

steff13 · 20/03/2017 21:29

That was about the only time Carrie WASN'T completely unreasonable!

This^^

anothermalteserplease · 20/03/2017 21:31

Her friend was unreasonable and incredibly judgemental.

FittonTower · 20/03/2017 21:35

When the final episode aired there was a talking - head documentry thing on and it was claimed, more than once, that "every women thinks they're/wishes they were Carrie". My friends and I couldn't decides whether this was one of those huge differences between America and Europe or just one of those examples of famous people being massively out of touch because who the fuck wants to be Carrie?? She's just awful.

FittonTower · 20/03/2017 21:35

Although in this episode she did have a point. But was still massively annoying

MidniteScribbler · 20/03/2017 21:36

Everything about her was U. I hated that the show made women look like they were only interested in shoes and men. Horrible show.

shakemysilliesout · 20/03/2017 21:40

I think the writer had lots of women approach him to say 'im Carrie Bradshaw', unlucky in love, independent, fun, glam. Ignoring how much hard work she is!

UnicornButtplug · 20/03/2017 21:49

Swnbu but most of her shoes sere UGLY just like her clothes!

MistressMerryWeather · 20/03/2017 22:10

I hated that the show made women look like they were only interested in shoes and men

I disagree.

SATC seen the four women deal with all sorts of issues like abortion, infertility, death, work, marriage/divorce and friendships.

This episode wasn't really about the shoes. It was the fact that the friend depicted her life as deeper and more meaningful than Carries simply because she had children. She also tried to shame Carrie for her choices.

I was one of a few episodes that touch on the amount a pressure put on women to have babies.

Disclaimer - I am not nor have I ever been paid to promote the show. :o

OwlinaTree · 20/03/2017 22:47

I think it's a great show. The characters are annoying at times, but we are all annoying at times! I also agree that it covered a lot of big issues that women face. And a lot of little issues too!

Charlotte in season 3/4 is just fabulous, encapsulates the pressures so many feel to have the perfect life.

mollyblack · 20/03/2017 23:05

I find the making people take shoes off thing totally bizarre. So i think carrie was not bu.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 20/03/2017 23:15

Going against the tide here but I think Carrie was being unreasonable.

I'm sure the woman Carrie was visiting had kids (not just a baby). Anyone daft enough to wear £500 shoes to what is essentially a kids party deserves everything they get.

My judgements probably off as I despise Carrie. Grin

Destinysdaughter · 20/03/2017 23:19

If the shoes were worth as much as an expensive piece of jewellery but she was just expected to leave them on the floor, then the friend should have offered to put them somewhere safe for her IMO!

BillSykesDog · 20/03/2017 23:23

Didn't it turn out the friend had nicked the shoes herself?

HarrietKettleWasHere · 20/03/2017 23:27

She was not unreasonable on this particular occasion.

One episode that really winds me up is when she's cheated on Aiden and he tries to keep his distance to put himself back together but she won't have it. And she clutches her chest dramatically and cries 'you have to forgive me. You have to forgive me. You have to forgive me. You HAVE to forgive me. You have to forgive me. You have to FORGIVE ME'.

And I just want to scream 'NO HE DOESN'T YOU DUPLICITOUS SELF ABSORBED NEEDY LYING TWAT'

haveacupoftea · 20/03/2017 23:28

It annoyed me a bit when she moaned about why should we not celebrate being single and get presents for it. Presumably the friend was expected to buy Carrie a wedding present when she eventually married Big, and how did Carrie know at that stage if she would ever be having children or not?

Miranda started out as the hard nosed career woman no one was supposed to like and became the most rounded, realistic and likeable character in the entire show. The other 3 became parodies of themselves.

I also have a problem with the obsession with shoes that resulted from Carrie's popularity. I'm sure no one was ever that bothered about shoes before SATC.
