AIBU to think it's fine for me to have 2 jobs?

I have a full-time job as a civil servant, but I've just accepted a full-time job in public relations as well. I know I can fulfil both roles perfectly well - luckily the civil service job is flexitime, which means I can do that work in the afternoons, while I do the PR stuff in the mornings.

Please don't think I'm doing this because of the money! I'm not actually short of cash, because as well as this I do a bit of freelancing a few evenings a year, which brings in a decent amount of cash, and I also earn a few quid from a family trust fund.

I'm doing it because I think I have so much to offer the world of PR! But I'm also a great civil servant, so I don't want to disappoint people by handing in my resignation there.

AIBU to think people shouldn't criticise me by suggesting I shouldn't be doing all this?

Hi George Grin

fairiedemon · 17/03/2017 19:02

What is your definition of full time? My full time job demands a minimum of 50 hours a week so I wouldn't be doing two of them! I would also question the ethics involved as there are bound to be times when the two commitments clash and one of your roles is funded out the public coffers.

fairiedemon · 17/03/2017 19:02

Oh. I fell for that one Blush

GideonOsborne · 17/03/2017 19:10

Yanbu this all sounds perfectly fine to me.

RazzleDazzle3 · 17/03/2017 19:11

George - I'm sure you can manage it, you did so well in your last job too, I'm sure Hmm

ALittleMop · 17/03/2017 19:12

Och you'll be grand, surely the PR thing will only be a couple of hours of a morning anyway.

Want2bSupermum · 17/03/2017 19:13

Two jobs fine. Six jobs.... who are you kidding?

Bloopbleep · 17/03/2017 19:13

Gottagetmoving · 17/03/2017 19:17

Hmm,...not sure.
Were you not demoted from a higher position in your civil service job because you were incompetent?

ifyoulikepinacolada · 17/03/2017 19:27

Totally fine - I'm presuming you have extensive PR experience and there isn't anyone better qualified for the role anyway!

Haters gonna hate but u do u bbz ur sooooo inspirational x

ImJustWondering · 17/03/2017 19:31

I would also question the ethics involved as there are bound to be times when the two commitments clash and one of your roles is funded out the public coffers.

I'd say if you can fit two 'full time' jobs into the working day then neither of them are full time (especially as one requires a long commute) so you should have your pay pro-rata-ed to reflect your part-time status.

megletthesecond · 17/03/2017 19:35

fairie so did I for a moment!

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 17/03/2017 19:37

Who really we talking about? I feel this is something i need to know more about.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 17/03/2017 19:40

Ah. Got it. That didn't take much googling.

PrincessFiorimonde · 17/03/2017 19:41

Supermum

Six jobs - really? Think I lost count on my fingers and toes, where I do all my adding up

Knifegrinder · 17/03/2017 19:42

I know it's not you, Gideon, because you wouldn't consider any of that in the least unreasonable, you Tory scum.

SpaghettiMeatballs · 17/03/2017 19:42

Won't you find the commute between Cheshire and London tough or do you intend to solve that by simply never going to Cheshire?

The80sweregreat · 17/03/2017 19:43

Hello Gideon, glad i dont live in your constituancy.

Want2bSupermum · 17/03/2017 19:57

Yeah he has six jobs now. He is an MP, Editor of standard, is on payroll for 'research' of a US college, Blackrock, he is a speaker at Washington speakers bureau and chairman of northern powerhouse partnership.

My Dad hates him. Told him that for someone so incompetent, he was very good at getting jobs and its probably a good thing he has so many jobs so he doesn't screw up anywhere too badly.
