ok. ds2 (7) is somewhat disinterested in working at school. Lots of boys are and I have chosen not to keep nagging him about it. I have discussed it with his teacher and she says he won't work unless forced to.
Anyway, I had a quick chat with her this morning as he wasn't feeling 100%.
ME: he wants you to know that's he's not feeling that good and will be very slow today
TEACHER: Like a usual day then ( or words to that effect)
ME. Even slower then, best to expect nothing.

Anyway, I've come away feeling miffed. Would any of you feel miffed?

Well, what does he like? What is he interested in? What doesnt he like?

Maybe a bit of bribery and the use of extra curricular activities could be the answer?

I couldn't get my knickers in a twist about this. It is a fairly mild joke. I do wonder if she feels you have been unsupportive.

Sparklingbrook · 11/11/2022 00:37

Zombie thread.

This!⬆️ Teachers' jobs are so bloody hard these days as it is. Having kids who, despite all your efforts, refuse to work when all the other children are, is incredibly wearing, frustrating & downright annoying! Tell her he's supposedly bored & see what happens when he gets more challenging work. He can't just not do anything because he can't be arsed - school & life doesn't work that way!!

Sparklingbrook · 11/11/2022 07:11

He's about 22 now so fingers crossed!

ClocksGoingBackwards · 11/11/2022 07:16

As a teacher, I’d be miffed by a parent who was basically telling their child that it’s ok to make no effort with their school work and that they could use the excuse of ‘not feeling that good’ to get out of doing anything.

It was not the teacher that was being weird in this situation.

phishy · 11/11/2022 07:19

When I was still teacher I would think of childen as him as a challenge. We have had all sorts of chats at school about how to motivate him. They know that he is quite capeable of doing the work and he will work if he's 'sat on', both at home and at school and if adults put in an incredible amount of work, but as soon as oyu turn oyur back he stops. I don't want to carry on like this, it's not helpful for him and it's too much work for evryone else.

Zombie but hilarious that OP gave up on her own son and sent quasi sick notes with him to take to school but expects the teacher to ‘sit on’ him when she has 30 other kids to teach.

Sparklingbrook · 11/11/2022 07:21

Would love to know what he does for a living now. 😂

WhiteFire · 11/11/2022 07:27

How things have changed though. 15 years ago the OP was slightly miffed. Today she would be fuming and telling the teacher how it is.

Teacher bashing again! She sounds like she was joking, perhaps tongue-in-cheek, but I think the problem is with your ds and why he doesn’t do much work.

Maybe teacher bashing for the first time..... 15 years ago 🙄
Anyway, I'd be interested to know if 22yr old DS is still as lazy 😆

pastafairyan · 11/11/2022 07:40

I'd find it tactless but I don't expect everyone to be tactful all the time, especially as I'm not myself. I'd let it go as a one off.

BeanieTeen · 11/11/2022 07:48

Well your child is putting zero effort into his work and going to fall behind as a result. I think you’ve got bigger fish to fry.
I guess she shouldn’t have said it - but to be honest, I think it would be better if more teachers were just blunt and direct, then maybe parents would be less complacent. There’s a lot of beating around the bush and pussyfooting around informing parents on how their children really are in school. I’ve always said to my child’s teacher please tell it straight because I know at their school there’s this culture of being overly polite - I think because parents react so badly to anything critical - no one really knows how their child is doing.

He’s probably got a degree and a Masters and a very important job now. 😂

😂😂 agreed it would be “Aibu to be fuming at this teacher’s hugely offensive comment about ds?” And the replies would be “yanbu i would complain to the governors and local authority”

Stripedbag101 · 11/11/2022 07:58

VeniVidiVickiQV · 05/03/2007 13:25

Well, if the parent is giving the child a "get out" of working hard, why should the teacher waste her energy?

So a child who does have driven or involved parents doesn’t deserve attention in the class room. How sad.

it is these kids who need more.

And this thread would have been in the Daily Mail. In fact there’s still time now it’s been resurrected 😂

Snnowflake · 11/11/2022 08:02

I cured DS’ laziness by getting tutors. Maths and Chemisstry - tutors came to the house - DS hated the intensive one to one. He magically could do the subjects well after that!

MN need a flag to flag up zombie threads at the message posting stage - no one checks the date on every OP.

toomuchlaundry · 11/11/2022 08:07

I’m amazed OFSTED wasn’t mentioned. I wonder if the next teacher was able to sort him out.
