46 and bored. What's your new adventure?

I just keep on hearing about people that are busy and overworked. Not me. I am bored. A 12 yo son, with the usual problems, but doing fine overall. I work freelance, and it's going well at the moment. An okay-ish relationship with dp. Health ok. I loved my twenties, there was always a new adventure to embark on and so much I wanted! Now I don't seem to want much anymore. I wrote a book 2 years ago, and that gave an amazing sense of achievement. I went on an 6 months course to be a better speaker (1 day a month) and that was great for my social life, and gave me a great sense of achievement. Now I can't think of anything I would like to do next? What do you do? What's your big adventure? What have you started learning after 40?

Well, I am currently unemployed and using redundancy package as an opportunity to discover who I am, what I want to do. Trying to think outside the box. Seeing a life coach.

Leisure wise, I want to travel, see jungles, rivers, mountains, ancient monuments.

I need a high paying career with lots of holiday entitlement!!!!!!! Any ideas?!

ThisAintALoveSong · 16/03/2017 13:24

You lot are an inspirational bunch! I love this thread.

I have played guitar for more than half my life - I'm early 30's. I've never really taken myself as far with it as I would like to go. I've hit a wall with it.

So I've signed up for proper guitar lessons as of next week. Go me!

Half an hour a week to learn professionally the thing I enjoy, that is solely for me and my own personal fulfillment and nobody else. Bliss!!

Astella22 · 16/03/2017 13:44

I want to spend a week completely alone, cut off from everything, think deserted island alone. I'm an introvert so it's my idea of heaven.

rightsofwomen · 16/03/2017 15:21

astella I did the very same last year for 3 nights. It was North Norfolk not a deserted island.
No phone or internet, just a sweet annexe to myself, walking, reading and sleeping.

I would really love to do it again.

nb a few people knew the phone number of the house owning the annexe so I could be contacted in an emergency, otherwise no one knew where I was.

Pupsiecola · 16/03/2017 16:24

I have developed a love of walking over the last 5 days. I listen to audiobooks which is brilliant as I rarely sit down to read. I would love to do some planned walks. The Clarendon Way (Salisbury to Winchester cathedrals) has been on my radar. It's 26 miles. I should organise it really and just get on with it.

Pupsiecola · 16/03/2017 16:31

I follow a very inspirational lady on social media. She has lost about 8st and does brilliant daily You Tube videos. She did a vlog on a book, The Key to Living the Law of Attraction. It arrived today. It talks about listing 101 (or 100, I haven't got to that bit yet!) things that you want to do in life. I have started a list. I've just added the Clarendon Way and stand up paddleboarding to it. We should keep this thread going. We could all make a list, and we could share ideas and report back as and when we tick things off...

StorminaBcup · 16/03/2017 19:08

Right, I've set myself the challenge of swimming the same distance as the channel. I'm a rubbish swimmer and I've been taking swimming lessons so this will be quite hard for me. I'm aiming to complete it by my 40th at the end of the year. And hopefully shift some baby weight too!

Panga63 · 16/03/2017 20:08

I joined a choir a few years ago and soon i will get to sing at the Albert Hall. Will need a v large Wine in the bar afterwards!
Always wanted to be a vet when i was a child, and just have agreed to help a friend tomorrow with lambing on her farm. That's shepherdess and diva ticked off my bucket list Grin

lbsjob87 · 16/03/2017 22:39

Placemarking as I have promised myself I will get more sleep for Lent;)
Will read properly in the morning.

I turned 40 last year, brother turns 40 next week, both feel the need to "do" something.

Also we both, separately, recently had work colleagues die reasonably young without having the chance to fulfil specific dreams, so am currently in reflective/contemplative mode.

Have some ideas - need the motivation to make them happen.

nannyafrica · 16/03/2017 23:08

When I was 30 I needed to do something for me as I felt stuck in a rut so I did this
www.africantrails.co.uk/tour/london-to-cairo-trans-africa
It was the best thing EVER .
I found out who I was and I went from a shy person to someone who can now talk to anybody with confidence. I ended up starting a business in Africa.

flatcoatfan · 18/03/2017 08:32

Nannyafrica that trip looks amazing. I feel the same as many on here. I'm 51 with DDs both flying the nest leaving me thinking what now? I work part time in an interesting challenging job which I love so feel very lucky. But I can't help thinking time is running out and there's so much I haven't done. I'm desperate to travel more and have adventures but lack of disposable income is such limiting factor. I'm lucky that I'm fit and healthy and have a great DH but he's so anxious about saving for our future he sometimes forgets to live in the 'now'. I love to cycle and have recently started rowing which I'm really loving but I can't help feeling it's all out there and I'm missing it.

PlacesToSee · 18/03/2017 09:17

Great thread. Definitely want to see it kept going.

I'm around this age too and feeling fed up ... wondering about some of the decisions I've made etc. We've a good income, I'm well educated (to doctorate level), I have three dcs. We live in a different country to the one I grew up in, nice house, nice neighbourhood. But I feel completely unfulfilled and that the real me stepped off this treadmill at some point and is watching with a bemused expression.

This tread is very inspiring and is making me think about taking control like many of you here are doing.

I just got a dog! I'm hoping to take her to agility classes once we get to know each other better

I have also started cooking something different for one meal a week as I love to cook but seem to be stuck with the same old meals lately. I'm also planning to start knitting blanket squares for charity. Haven't knitted for years

I definitely need more travel and adventure in my life. 2 young kids and a ft job plus a house to do up means no time or money for experiencing different countries and cultures. I have always wanted to travel and have hardly done much in all my 30+ years. I have an immense wanderlust which I've had for years and has never left me. Instead I did the uni route, got a job, got a house and kids etc. I had a fun life prior to having kids - I don't mean that to sound awful. But I never did any real travelling. I feel at odds with myself, I know I need to be settled for the kids but there's a WHOLE world of adventure and culture and places and people out there. Garrrr I feel so restless.

Nepotism · 20/03/2017 15:29

Pupsiecola I'm also in Hampshire and have made lots of walking companions through Meetup. I'd like to do the Solent Way and Round the Island walks soon

Pupsiecola · 20/03/2017 15:34

I've looked at the Meetups but not actually been to any yet. I do love walking though. Lots seem to be on weekends and that's largely family time...

I'm not far from Winchester. Is that anywhere near you?

allegretto · 20/03/2017 16:39

The Clarendon Way (Salisbury to Winchester cathedrals) has been on my radar.

I would like to do this too.

TricksyLiesmith · 20/03/2017 16:50

I'm 42 and learned to ski last year and love it . Wish I'd done it earlier to be honest .

I've also taken up am dram which really throws you out of your comfort zone .

Great thread OP !

Huldra · 20/03/2017 17:48

I have my eye on some more ldwps, the Wayfayres Way or Test Way and Bournemouth Coast Path.
I've joined a political party and want to learn a language.

giveovermypreciousss · 20/03/2017 18:13

Running, learn a new sport like badminton or roller derby Winkor do an artistic part time course.

madnskint · 20/03/2017 19:16

Pupsicola I walked the Clarendon Way a few years ago. It was a challenge- but really enjoyable.

At 45 I passed my motorbike test and bought a bike Grin

Nepotism · 21/03/2017 07:15

Pups (If I may be so familiar) I'm in the New Forest

pinkhousesarebest · 21/03/2017 07:27

What a lovely inspiring thread. We bought an old farmhouse and I spend my time in brocantes furnishing it for pennies. I would love to do that for a living.
Oh and I started horse riding again after 30 years. Have just got a share going so the weekends are full but my house is bedlam.
