Hello :)

Recently I have started to make Nappy Cakes for family members and they have suggested that I should start taking orders. However I am not sure.. I originally started making them as a fun way to give baby things to people and not sure how many people would generally go out and order one!
AIBU to ask if you could answer the following questions?

  1. Would you ever consider buying a Nappy Cake?
  2. How much money would you pay on a Nappy cake?
  3. What would you like to see in it?

I am kind of hoping the Nappy Cake idea would work because I am looking for a way to earn some money and I really enjoyed it.. However I do need people's honest opinions..Thankyou :)

Also is there anything else you would consider buying that would be costume made to your order?

Thankyou :)

and I don't like the idea of all those nappies out of the packet and having been messed with

Same here. I was given one as a gift for my baby shower and I donated it. Just didn't like the idea of it being handled by someone else.

SailAwaySailAwaySailAway · 12/03/2017 18:19

Don't forget to factor in any tax to your prices if you start selling these. And you might want to consider liability insurance. Direct Line to a good one for small businesses that's quite cheap but all the costs need to be part of your pricing.

Soubriquet · 12/03/2017 18:20

Hmm I do like nappy cakes. I think they are a nice gift

But would you be able to offer alternate products with them?

I would prefer not to use johnsons. I never used the moisturiser and I won't touch talc.

So I would be much more willing to pay if it was child's farm products

Cheerybigbottom · 12/03/2017 18:21

I recently made a nappy cake for a baby nephew, I really suck at crafty things but I managed a two tier folded round nappy cake with baby blankets covering the cake (like icing I s'pose)and some gifts on the edges. I wouldn't buy one.

However, like others have said I can imagine there's a market but I suspect it would not be profitable for you based on what people would pay.

haveacupoftea · 12/03/2017 18:22

I wouldnt not buy one if you know what I mean. You know what I would actually buy though, a little bag with all the essentials for baby's first week with a sealed packet of nappies, some plain vests and sleepsuits, water wipes and a few of the little ready made bottles of formula (just in case!). You could sell them at the fairs you get for mums who want to sell on their stuff/on ebay. Good for presents/FTMs/people who leave it til last minute before getting hospital bag organised.

SquedgieBeckenheim · 12/03/2017 18:24

We were given one when DD1 was born, it was a waste for us. The nappies in it were size 3, by the time DD fitted those she was in cloth. The bath products didn't agree with her skin. So the only bit that got used was the toy!
For that reason I wouldn't buy one.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 12/03/2017 18:24

Sorry should have said @munmy

munmyxl · 12/03/2017 18:25

@LiviaDrusillaAugusta because you did that same to me Hmm

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 12/03/2017 18:25

No I bolded your name - if you put a @ sign, you get sent an email notifying you that someone had mentioned you

BalloonSlayer · 12/03/2017 18:28

I think it looks lovely.

I am going to a baby shower soon - my first! didn't have them in my day! - and that would be a nice present to take.

Not sure how much I'd be prepared to pay though . . .

listsandbudgets · 12/03/2017 18:28

sorry I wouldn't buy it OP. In fact I'd never even heard of such a thing until today and I'm amazed that they exist.

I'd be more likely to buy a cake for the mum and a packet of nappies for the baby.

Sorry to be negative just not for me but I have learnt something new from this thread

munmyxl · 12/03/2017 18:28

@LiviaDrusillaAugusta ok well SORRY I didn't know. Haven't you got anything better to doHmm

BalloonSlayer · 12/03/2017 18:30

People have put @ in front of my user name loads of times but I have never had an email saying they have mentioned me!

Shadowboy · 12/03/2017 18:32

I'd buy it if the 'ingredients' were high quality. So really nice nappies, good quality muslins and organic, neals yard type baby massage oil or a swaddling blanket etc etc

PeridotPeridot · 12/03/2017 18:35

I'm not a huge fan tbh op...but I'm not a very 'novelty' type person. I couldn't buy something like that without mentally totting up the cost and not seeing the value in paying £x extra just to have some nappies and toiletries prettily arranged.

However, I think there's probably a decent enough market for it...people buying group gifts for baby showers, maternity leaving presents for a colleague etc. And I can imagine more childless people buying one for a friends/family members dc...it's exactly the type of thing my sister would buy me who has money to burn and puts pretty over practical iyswim...and I know plenty of people the same.

Anyway, cost wise...I would count how much it's actually cost you and then add a fiver. Advertise and see how much interest you get and if it's a lot, put the prices up from there.

Balloon Its a relatively new (and really bloody annoying!) feature Grin

peaceloveandbiscuits · 12/03/2017 18:39

I don't like the idea of someone taking out all the nappies from the packet and handling them enough to roll them up. They're going on a newborn baby, they'd get all dusty and minging if left out, surely?

It's a trend that would have worked well with terry squares, which you can wash, but not really with disposables.

LucklessMonster · 12/03/2017 18:42

I've never heard of this and I can't imagine why anybody would want this as opposed to a bag of nappies without the markup.

Puremince · 12/03/2017 18:42

I know someone who has made these as gifts and they've always been very well received. I wouldn't buy one myself, though - if I thought someone would like one, I'd have a go at making it myself.

stoopido · 12/03/2017 18:45

Not really my thing. I also, wouldn't buy one because it looks pretty simple and quick to put together.

peaceloveandbiscuits · 12/03/2017 18:47

Also the lack of cake is upsetting.

wizzywig · 12/03/2017 18:48

What is a jeremy fisher?

NotTheMrMenAgain · 12/03/2017 18:49

It's the type of thing I might make for someone if I knew they specifically wanted a nappy cake and if I knew them well enough to know what sorts of baby toiletries etc they'd actually use. I really wouldn't buy one because they look to me like the type of gift that's bought when the giver hasn't got a clue what would be really appreciated so opts for something generic instead.

To be honest I think they're a bit naff and it would be nicer to have some muslins and a special toy etc in pretty, useful basket or similar container. When you untie the ribbon do all the nappies and stuff fall apart? So you'd need to put them in a container anyway?

You've done a nice job, but I can't see you making much money on it at all (I could be wrong though). On a more positive note I like your parquet-style flooring OP.

syntheticharmony · 12/03/2017 18:51

My friends got me one when I had my son, now 6. They paid £50 and from what I can remember, it contained nappies, blanket, soft teddy, socks, baby shoes and a couple of dummies.

I appreciated it definitely and would consider buying one.
