To criticise DHs homemade shoe rack?

I feel awful, he's just huffed off.
He's just made this shoe storage thing for our v small hallway. I wasn't keen on the colour or style really but didn't want to criticise him when he was actually doing something helpful for once. My only criteria was it must not be too big.

Now he's finished and put it in...and it's too big.
It's very helpful to have but leaves very little space coming up and and down the stairs imo. Or am I nit picking?

At least you've got a shoe rack... My DH has been insisting he wants to build one since we moved in 6 years ago! He's built various other bits of shelving, etc. so I don't complain too much, but it would be nice to have it.

" Being 'an adult' doesn't actually make us all SKILLED at DIY tasks."

No, but surely it also means that you don't have to tip toe around & can just say "great-now make it fit".

He's done a little lovely job on it!

He must feel a bit sad as it really looks like he made a lot of effort. I say this as a wife of a carpenter too.

It is too big though. The second picture made me burst out laughing.

YABU, I would pay for that! He could have paid more attention to the size but otherwise it looks pretty good!

One that fitted into the corner would give you more space like this one

YABU.

didn't want to criticise him when he was actually doing something helpful for once are you usually so condescending towards him? Or is he genuinely completely useless? Either way you have a bigger problem than a shoe rack.

I'm a worry wart, I'd have visions of some one tripping down the stairs and knocking themselves out on so wouldn't want it there. Is very nice though! Is there nowhere else you could put it?

The basic problem is that space is not large enough to accommodate adult size shoes. The rack is (probably) the size it needs to be to allow adult shoes to fit correctly. Right rack, wrong place!
If you had specified toddler size shoes it would have been less deep so allowing more space for safe use of the stairs.
Of course the feminists (or those attempting true equality) out there would have told DH to look after the little ones and make the tea while they get on and make a shoe rack.

A good trick for making shoe cabs shallow is to angle the shelves at 45degrees, the high side towards you.

But I wonder if there is a less awkward place you can put it in the hall.

I have one that is actually a wall wine rack left over from a kitchen fitting. It is about 900mm high x 300x300. Fits easily in a corner by the door. I thought about buying a wider one but they are incredibly a bit expensive. I am not fond of woodwork.

Ok, this might be a bit random but could it be attached to the wall higher up? At a position that's still usable but high enough to give you the floor space to manoeuvre. If not I think you need to get used to it. He has obviously put an effort in to it and he's done a good, if big, job.
