I had dd1 at 35 weeks by emergency section (didn't have steroids) - she was a really good size (over 3kg!), didn't need SCBU, no breathing problems. She needed phototherapy & was tube fed but only for a few days (& I had a phototherapy cot at my bedside so they didn't take her away or anything). In our case the jaundice was caused by my antibodies (causing her to be quite anaemic as well) but despite this she did fine & breastfed with no problems from about a week old. The main problems were that she was very sleepy & I hated all the blood tests she had to have.

My other three have been born by elective section at around 37 weeks (managed to get steroids) and again no problems (lovely births) apart from the jaundice/my antibodies affecting them.

Good luck!

No experience personally, though one baby was in SCBU for a few days but wanted to wish you all the best OP.

I had my baby at term but had to have a c section due to appendicitis, so can understand a little of the shock you're feeling. They had all the resuscitation stuff ready for the baby and I was terrified! As it was he came out screaming his head off and was absolutely fine! The NHS at its finest.

Good luck lovely, I'm sure you and you're little person will be grand Smile

My daughter was a section at 37+4 but was effectively a 34/35 week baby. She was tiny but mighty and was in my arms moments after she'd been born.

It's scary for you but remember this is really routine for the staff. This is what they do on a daily basis (I found it really reassuring to know I wasn't the only person in that position on that day)

sympatico1 · 10/03/2017 15:42

Can't speak from personal experience re having a section, but my son videoed (with his wife's permission!) the whole operation when his daughter was born by c section - it was amazing! My DIL was smiling at the camera at the very same moment the consultant was rummaging about in her abdomen! She said she never felt a thing!! She was sore afterwards, but personally, the discomfort after any medical procedure (although I didn't have either of my children by c section, I did have lots (and I mean lots!) of stitches) is not half as bad as the worry of waiting for the operation.

NicAndNick · 10/03/2017 15:46

My DB was 34 weeks. He is now 30+ and works in research after completing his physics degree.

altiara · 10/03/2017 15:52

Good luck OP, I know it seems such a shock but the positive thing is that your doctors and medical staff can make this decision and do the best for your baby!
I've no real experience to help you with but I was born over 6 weeks early over 40 years ago so hospitals are well trained for early babies.
Good luck again Flowers

Hi my daughter decided to make a spontaneous arrival at 35 weeks. She was 5lb 101/2 in weight, didn't been to go to SCBU at all and apart from slow to feed and a bit of jaundice had no problems at all. She is 10 in a couple of weeks, one of the tallest in her class and a real smart cookie. I hope that reassures you and good luck with your c-section x

JumpingJetFlash · 10/03/2017 15:53

Need not been sorry 😐

Applebite · 10/03/2017 16:03

Lots of luck OP. 35 weeks isn't that tiny and you're both in the best hands Flowers

JaneEyre70 · 10/03/2017 16:13

My 2nd DD came at 36 weeks by emergency c section and she was 6lb 2. She was absolutely fine and they just watched her temperature and feeding ability for a few days. I initially panicked when they said we're going to theatre but they were so good explaining what was happening and the anaesthetist really distracted us both. DH got a bit green after baby had been born but they took him to one side and he waited in a side room with our DD until I went into the recovery room. He said afterwards he didn't like it, but when our 3rd DD was born by planned elective c section he was stood watching them......!!!!

Topseyt · 10/03/2017 16:13

Good luck.

It can seem scary, but the babies are nearly always fine at that stage.

I had an emergency c-section at 35 weeks for DD3. She was a good size at 6.5 pounds and only needed tube fed for a couple of days. She is now a strapping and sporty 14 year old, significantly taller than me too.

IadoreEfteling · 10/03/2017 16:23

Op did you know before you were going to need a c section? If not, big knickers for after - ( come up over scar) keep scar well aired when they take bandage off - expose stitches to air every day to help it heal, V pillow - essential for feeding, so easy with it ( section or not) but rests on tummy so again no pressure on scar, and I had dd wedged into mine in hospital she never went into her cot. also great at night to help prop you up.

Co sleeper cot - arms reach - means no sitting up and twisting in night - easy transfers and you can sleep as baby in own space.

No washing, lifting, or too much stuff like that for two weeks, gentle walking no bending....and be careful in hospital you may feel wobbly when you first get out of bed, make sure someone with you to help.
Other than that Section - planned - is great way to bring baby into world!

RainyDayBear · 10/03/2017 16:52

I had an EMCS, was terrified during pregnancy at the thought of one, but actually I now want an elective when I have another baby. It was absolutely nothing to worry about. The surgical team were just amazing and I felt I was in such safe hands. It was the NHS at its absolute finest as far as I'm concerned. I hope yours goes smoothly and all is well Flowers

McPie · 10/03/2017 17:06

My 33+3 week twins have spent the last 10 years terrorising each other! Youngest needed neo puff but his sister was fine. They were tube fed for a week and were due home after 2 but both caught a cold from MIL and had to stay another 2 (not bitter much at that at all Angry).
My 2 births were emergency C sections, 1st was scary as oxygen levels were dropping and everything moved fast but 2nd was calm as even though they were early I had expected to have another.

SparkyBlue · 12/03/2017 08:13

OP I hope everything went well. Two emergency sections here. One at 36 weeks and one at 34 weeks. Both children hale and hearty. In fact 18 month old currently wrecking the place. It's an awful shock when it happens.

MissWimpyDimple · 12/03/2017 08:56

My 35 weeker is 10 and currently tearing up the slopes in the alps.

A bit of jaundice and blood sugar level issues but they took fantastic care of her and it was all very positive.

Hope it all went well!

SandysMam · 12/03/2017 12:01

Hi all, just an update for you. Not out of the woods but my condition has stabilised for now and they have decided to let baby stay in a bit longer. It has all been such a rollercoaster and no doubt more to come but at least I have had some time to prepare now.
Thank you all so much for your support, loved hearing about your stories and c section tips very handy. Thank you xx
