To expect the toast to be buttered if you order scrambled eggs on toast?

supercue HATE the word 'chomping'

BillyButtfuck · 10/03/2017 12:03

I like my toast cooked slightly before adding the butter so it sits on top and doesn't melt in all the way

NotaSnowflake · 10/03/2017 12:06

Zukie I'm astonished! I could not survive without Dairy! It is nectar of the gods! I go through 4-6 pints of whole milk per day and if I allowed myself I would have butter with everything! However due to my milk addiction, I rarely touch butter. Or else I may as well just assume I have heart disease.... (no disrespect intended, my Dad passed from Heart Disease). And cheese.....well there's just no heaven quite like it!

Oh and fromage frais....ShockGrin

Redpony1 · 10/03/2017 12:07

Never ever have butter on toast when there is something else on it (beans/egg/spaghetti hoops etc.) No need for it
This!!!

I don't like butter at all though, i use Flora Light when i have toast on its own. I don't use butter/spread in sandwiches either - yuck! Just a thin scraping of mayo at most to make it moist Grin

mommybunny · 10/03/2017 12:10

Scrambled eggs on toast is a taste sensation I only discovered once I started visiting the UK in my twenties and having it in B&Bs. I won't say it's the reason I finally moved here, but it was definitely a tick in the "plus" column. Now I make it for my 3/4 English family every Sunday. It should go without saying that the toast under the eggs must be buttered.

I will put my head above the parapet, though, and state that I find the English/British/whatever habit of putting butter/spread/whatever on sandwiches one of the most vile, repugnant things I've ever witnessed. I still shudder at the memory of eating mozzarella, pesto and tomato sandwiches on foccacia prepared for meetings at my very smart law firm with some icky spread on them. In what universe does that make sense?

ClaryIsTheBest · 10/03/2017 12:11

Never ever have butter on toast when there is something else on it (beans/egg/spaghetti hoops etc.) No need for it. Right?

I was pretty much dairy free for years (due to sport and being on a strict diet plan). When I needed butter I usually used coconut fat (tastes nice).
I started eating a little dairy again a few months ago (with 2nd child I won't compete again anywhere).

But honestly, I don't get the dairy craze. Why?

ShatnersBassoon · 10/03/2017 12:13

I always ask for toast to be left un-buttered. I feel like crying when you order something and it comes with a limp slice of thickly margarined toast Sad

Butter with peanut butter is insane. Brown Owl did this for me on Brownie pack holiday (only 35 years ago, it's still raw), and I had to gag it down because I was frightened of her. Two slippery and oily substances together Envy

ShatnersBassoon · 10/03/2017 12:15

Actually, all buttered sandwiches are an abomination. If your sandwich is too dry, you need to rethink the filling, not add a layer of fatty lubricant.

Vermillioncomfyshoes · 10/03/2017 12:15

But in that case I'd be upset about the dry eggs. Not the lack of butter...

Scrambled eggs are only dry if you forget to cook them in lashings of butter. Yum.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 10/03/2017 12:16

At least you can add it - I hate the stuff so always have to ask for it not to be added, they rarely listen!

BillyButtfuck · 10/03/2017 12:18

I'm curious about the moist filling = no need for butter argument.
What about Jacket Potatoes? I always smother them with butter and mash slightly before adding the filling (tuna and cheese / beans and cheese)

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2017 12:20

I hate butter
I can't even stand cake, pastry or biscuits made with butter

Even the smell nauseates me.
Also upsets my stomach - that runs (!) on my dad's side of the family

mommybunny · 10/03/2017 12:22

I don't eat jacket potatoes as a rule, mainly because I consider fillings like baked beans to be a punishment worse than death.

I could excuse your buttering the potatoes before putting the fillings in if the potatoes were hot and the butter melted before the fillings were added. It's the cold of the butter/spread in sandwiches that I find so disgusting.

Previously1488218868 · 10/03/2017 12:24

I stopped using butter on bread a while ago, mainly because it is difficult to find good butter any more, and when I do it is kept in the fridge and too hard to use, can't be bothered with it. Spreadable just isn't the same.

Just found this thread after making myself toast with avocado and rocket on top (no butter, and absolutely no spread).

The way butter and bread are made these days (bread goes soggy faster due to palm oil and soya flour) it doesn't need added moisture (had to use that word).

Talkietalk · 10/03/2017 12:24

I am known for not having butter on my toast - hate the sogginess

Redpony1 · 10/03/2017 12:25

Oh that's another thing, butter on potatoes, or in scrambled egg is a big no no!!! Yuck yuck yuck

ClaryIsTheBest · 10/03/2017 12:27

But in that case I'd be upset about the dry eggs. Not the lack of butter...

Honestly, I went years without eating scrambled eggs. If you get them in a restaurant you don't know what they put in there (as I said, sports diet). And I prefer sunny side up/poached eggs anyway...

But yes, good scrambled eggs need butter and milk, I suppose, but seeing as I was dairy free...

But seriosuly, whole grain toast with (or without marmite) and a runny egg? Way better than scrabmled. (and it's also healthier)

ClaryIsTheBest · 10/03/2017 12:27

shoot, I meant to highlight that:

Scrambled eggs are only dry if you forget to cook them in lashings of butter. Yum.

Butter with peanut butter is a special new level of weird! And super yuk! Shock Each to their own I guess.

Like a few others on here, since I adopted a healthy way of eating, I no longer eat butter really. (Same with DH.) We threw away half a block 5-6 weeks ago that had been in the butter dish for 3 months. We also haven't ate bread for about 2 months.

Even before that, we ate very little bread, and would often buy a loaf, and only consume half of it, before chucking it away about a week later. Then we'd buy another one about 2-3 weeks later. Don't have any bread or butter in the house atm, and haven't had since January. Nor cheese. Don't miss them to be honest.

I think when you adopt a healthier way of eating, you find 'fatty' and 'carby' stuff a bit off-putting.

zukiecat · 10/03/2017 12:29

Nota

I get that people love it, and I'm very much in the minority amongst my family and friends

I've hated dairy since I was very very young

If someone makes me a coffee I have to have it stirred before the teaspoon is contaminated by being in a cup with milky coffee

I avoid sauces and puddings made with milk, so no custard or anything like that either

Strifae64 · 10/03/2017 12:29

Whats the deal with the word Moist anyway?

BarbaraofSeville · 10/03/2017 12:30

I don't eat jacket potatoes as a rule, mainly because I consider fillings like baked beans to be a punishment worse than death

At last! Someone who agrees with me that baked beans Do Not Go On Baked Potato. But I do like tuna mayo, cheese and butter as a filling.

Previously Butter doesn't need to be kept in the fridge Confused. It's fine at room temperature for a week or two and there are pure butter spreadable brands (M&S or Loseley - still need to be kept at room temperature) or Kerrygold is slightly softer than most other brands.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 10/03/2017 12:30

To expect the toast to be buttered if you order scrambled eggs on toast?

YNBU. But they've also stopped putting butter on jacket potatoes in some places. Scoundrels.

ClaryIsTheBest · 10/03/2017 12:40

I like baked potatoes with chilli, caramelized onions with mushrooms, baked potatoes with, baked potatoes with quinoa, grilled vegetables with bacon bits, with salt and ruccola...

They don't need butter...
