I'm probably going to get shot down for this, but I just had a little disagreement with a woman I know. She posted a photo on Facebook of a rather large tattoo on her forearm that she'd just had done. Last month she had skin divers put in her chest and hand. The month before she had another shit tattoo.
This individual is single and has two children. She hasn't worked a day in the last decade, but is living off the state. Am I being a bitch by thinking she should spend the money she receives on feeding the children and keeping a roof over their heads? I noted that she feeds her boys Pot Noodle for dinner but makes sure she's got her fags too. It just annoys me.

...and the person I have in mind when I first read this must be one of the 2% then....

There are some nasty fuckers on MN. God forbid they should ever fall on hard times.

I've never seen a hard day in my life but that doesn't stop me from understanding why people need help and how they get stuck in vicious cycle of poverty. And it doesn't stop me from thinking that I might never be there myself one day.

There's (was?) also Income Support in the UK, as in Portugal where I live now. It's different from Job Seeking support (whatever it's called in different places)

Income support here is the last ditch benefit and, until this year, was run by social services rather than the state insurance office, so you'd go see a social worker and take all your bills and income details and they'd calculate how much you need while chatting to you about how you can improve your situation and signposting to various services that can help you, and then you do that again once a month as needed. It was a really good system because it gave individualised help but now they've shifted it to the state insurance system so its anonymous form filling and no ability to explain individual circumstances so its probably shit now but at least no one's going hungry or losing their home.

YANBU OP - I know people like this, they probably are in the minority but for some reason they are always the loudest!

According to MN no one is well off on benefits and no one fiddles them and if they do they will get caught fast - but they do and they don't

I've been told at school I am a fucking idiot for going to work.... I'm not, I'm much much better off than them they just don't know it! But a lot of these mothers do seem to be doing okay

It pisses me off as I have a single parent friend who works and is on her arse constantly - she should be helped more.

Benefits are brilliant, lots of people should get more money.
The minority who are taking the piss should be stopped - I don't care if they are in a minority and the bankers fiddle more blah blah - they raise their children to do the same and they deserve more. We should expect more from people
