AIBU to think my childminder is taking the p**s?

Hi all, today my dd's childminder texted me to tell me she's not well (headache and sore throat) but still "open", she just wanted to let parents know she won't be taking the kids out anywhere. I'm not happy about dd going there if the childminder has a virus she may catch so I won't take her, but as she is saying she is still open and not actually cancelling as such I would still have to pay. AIBU to think she is taking the p**s? Surely if she's unwell she should just cancel?

YABU I think. I have a cold and sore throat and I'm at work today, I am still capable of working and I'd be annoyed if my employer told me not to come in in case I pass on my germs. I don't want to lose a day's pay over a sore throat!

My DS goes to a nursery and there's always at least one child there with a cold, sore throat, etc. If I didn't send him in because I didn't want him to catch anything he'd never be there.

harderandharder2breathe · 09/03/2017 08:01

Yabu

She's staying open because most parents use childcare so they can work, and most of those can't just take time off willy billy when their child is perfectly healthy.

Unless you're going to drip feed that your PFB has a suppressed immune system then get a grip. You're the one BU.

harderandharder2breathe · 09/03/2017 08:01

And yes you should pay since you're the one choosing not to send your DD

Trifleorbust · 09/03/2017 08:02

I think a headache and a sore throat is reasonable cause to stay in for the day. She is just letting you know.

budgiegirl · 09/03/2017 08:02

OP, YABU. If you don't want your child near a person with a cold, what would you do if you had a cold?

Children who go to childminders will be exposed to germs. It's just the way it is. At least your CM is giving you a heads up.

WeAreStars · 09/03/2017 08:13

Thank you for your honest responses. It helps to see things from another point of view. Ok I am over reacting lol

She sounds really sensible! If I have a cold and feel ill, I work from home/do lighter duties. She's doing the same, and still having the children if people want, that's a sensible solution all round.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 09/03/2017 08:26

I wouldn't say 'over reacting', just not seeing it from your CM's POV or the other parents. Starting to use childcare is a steep learning curve. Best you post here again next time you're not sure about something - then you stand a better chance of keeping your CM 😊

jojopapabebe · 09/03/2017 08:55

Shock YABVU. Your childminder is doing you a favour by staying open. What do you think happens at school or nursery when staff have a cold? Colds are a fact of life nothing to fret about.

PurpleMinionMummy · 09/03/2017 09:11

So you're one of those people who require time off work for every little headache and sore throat then?

halcyondays · 09/03/2017 09:17

It's a headache and sore throat, which is very common and not a big deal, not a vomiting bug or flu, which would be completely different.

WeAreStars · 09/03/2017 09:39

Thank you for your honest responses. IABU

Well done for admitting it OP

crapitus · 09/03/2017 09:40

If she worked in a nursery or school she'd probably still go to work. Its her work, exactly the same. The country would grind to a halt if we all stayed at home or didn't work every time we got a virus. She's giving you the option of not sending your child - I don't know what more she could do to be honest.

Lindy2 · 09/03/2017 09:46

So I take it you never send your child unless she is absolutely 100% well then? No runny noses, coughs etc at all? You keep her off each time.
I expect not. People can't live in a sterile environment. Your childminder is a bit under the weather but we'll enough to work. She's just going to have a less active day.

WeAreStars · 09/03/2017 09:48

Thanks. I get it, I'm being unreasonable. It helps to hear another point of view.

Is there a way I can delete this thread does anyone know?

Yabvu, how do you know its a virus, or she is simply run down. You don't stop going to work when you have a cough or cold or headache. I often get headache and sore throats because I have sinus problems, if I were to take days off work each time, I would be fired. Even teachers have to go in if they have a cold or sore throat. Good on her, I think some parents will be thankful they don't have to take annual leave. If she said she had DV or Flu, then yes I would agree with you. She is open, and honest with you, its up to you, to do what you want.

Aeroflotgirl · 09/03/2017 09:54

oops sorry just read your response op.

Wow. I was just thinking your childminder is being vvvvv reasonable and no way taking the piss (very strange use of words very childish) as shes given you to choice. Shes still would care for your child but letting you know shes not well.

londonrach · 09/03/2017 10:02

Well done op, i must read whole thread first!!!!!

1bighappyfamily · 09/03/2017 10:06

Well done OP :)

My little bag of snot is at the CM today. If there was a child there with immune issues then I wouldn't have sent her but the CM was happy to take her and she's happy in herself. I suspect the CM is applying the same rule to her own health.

Yesterday, after pick up, due to my own stinking cold and temperature, we sat on the sofa and watched a movie. I could still make dinner and take care of them, just not at my usual speed :)

Doyouwantabrew · 09/03/2017 10:09

Bloody helol leave the op alone she's asked opinions and changed her mind!! Good on you op. I speak as a cm for years and years Flowers
