To be scared of monsters?

ImLadybird · 07/03/2017 22:18

So when I was little I was terrified of monsters that lived under my bed, kind of like the troll in the Three Billy Goats fairy tale. I used to jump as far away as I could when getting out so they wouldn't grab my ankles.
As an adult I've always had a divan bed with draws and I'd forgotten all about it but I recently moved house and got a new bed with a regular frame and a huge 60cm gap underneath - a breading ground for loads of monsters. This stupid irrational fear has resurfaced and I can't sit on the edge of the bed or let my feet dangle. It's ridiculous. I try to force myself but I get all panicky inside.
Do any of you sane MNers still have any childhood fears?

I can't sleep with a leg out of bed either, the monsters under the bed will get me. I'm scared now just thinking about it!

MintToBe · 08/03/2017 19:16

I can't look out of my top windows at night in case Spring Heeled Jack is out there. Thanks whichever Mumsnetter first mentioned him!
I've also moved a mirror that was left behind from the top of the stairs the day I moved in, as I'm convinced that there will be someone behind me. The mirror is somewhere else now. I'm not getting rid of it as it obviously belongs to the house and who knows what would happen!

MeganChips · 08/03/2017 19:18

I once said "Candyman" 3 times in the mirror to freak out my sister. I ended up scaring myself so badly I cried.

I have a thing about the stairs and landing. I always feel like something is right behind me and avoid being the last one up because it's worse.

I blame a book I read as a kid called Footsteps on the stairs. It was terrifying.

RiversrunWoodville · 08/03/2017 19:36

Oh god megan I first saw candyman at a sleepover in first year in school and don't think any of us were the same after! Went to the loo in 3s.

I definitely don't believe in monsters or ghosts . It's not me that DH thinks is crazy for leaving the bathroom light on because it leaves enough light to make it back from the loo to safety. Nor is it me who sleeps "wrapped up like a fish supper" so nothing sticks out to be grabbed and pulled under the bed Blush

Coloursthatweremyjoy · 08/03/2017 19:37

I am absolutely NOT scared of monsters under the bed and having storage boxes under there (empty ones) is in case of extra stuff needing storing and not to take up the space so monsters can't live under there oh no.

Do not watch the last series of Luther...quite frankly that first episode was the scariest thing I have EVER seen. Again do not watch. Shudder.

LoupGarou · 08/03/2017 19:37

We used to live on the edge of Navajo territory in the US and after being told about skin walkers I used to routinely mess myself when DH had to work late after dark, I used to glue myself to our dog!

PecanSandy · 08/03/2017 19:41

I must keep my neck covered at all times because of vampires. Even on the hottest nights of summer I need a sheet over me.

HappyFlappy · 08/03/2017 19:53

Can't sleep with a leg out of the duvet, monsters will get it!

This is me, too Kingthistle. No legs out, no arms out and have to have a cover over me no matter how hot and uncomfy I am. The only part of the human body that is safe from Underbed Monstor Attack is the head - presumably because they find us as ugly as we think they are, and can't bear to look at us (boak).

HappyFlappy · 08/03/2017 19:57

they were demons of the small sort

They are the most type Witch. They can run up your nose and eat your eyeballs from the inside out!

What's a skin walker? Sounds creepy af!

Kithulu · 08/03/2017 20:06

I am also scared of windows at night. When I see stunning houses on grand designs with massive floor to celing windows, I think it looks fab in daylight - but no way could I cope with those windows at night. I'd never be able to even go on that room!

I always run up the stairs at night time, hate locking my glass front door. I get the fear going to the toilet at night, if I really need to I am scared to look down the dark stair well to downstairs. - glad to hear there are others like me!

HappyFlappy · 08/03/2017 20:09

Jesus Christ LittleMiss

I'm frightened to go to bed now!

I squeaked so much watching that film that the dog went for me (she was very apologetic afterwards). That was really terrifying.

Spadequeen · 08/03/2017 20:13

Omg. I'm not alone! There are others out there like me.

Mine are, I can't look in a mirror a nighttime, was a nightmare when we had mirror doors on our wardrobes.

I hate eyes. Have never been able to have any posters with eyes looking out, kids can't have them either in their rooms. Got away with it so far but teenagerdom is lurking.

Thank you for making me realise it's not just me.

HappyFlappy · 08/03/2017 20:18

I am scared of toilets on plane

So am I since I opened the door to one on a long haul flight, and there was a man sat taking a dump!

(He got an even bigger shock, though!)

And why has no-one mentioned VELOCIRAPTORS?

Ever since Jurassic Park I check every building I enter to see how Velociraptor-proof it is, and I work out an escape route (No good relying on the fire escape - those feckers are clever - they'll have that sussed before they even launch their toothy attack . . . )

HappyFlappy · 08/03/2017 20:20

I can't recall being scared of monsters but I remember being terrified of snakes coming into the house.
Another fear took hold of me when someone told me, 'If you die in your dreams you'll die in reality.' So I was really afraid of going to sleep at night for a while. Now of course I know that's ridiculous, after all, how could anyone know if that's true lol???

WattdeEll · 08/03/2017 21:28

HappyFlappy Grin the horror 😷

haveacupoftea · 08/03/2017 21:31

Cant look at a mirror in the dark in case I see Bloody Mary Blush we have hardly any mirrors in our house for this reason...

DanyellasDonkey · 08/03/2017 22:20

In my childhood, an episode of Skippy gave me the creeps - something to do with people playing the didgeridoo. To this day that sound terrifies me.

2017SoFarSoGood · 08/03/2017 23:39

The large gap under my bed does indeed scare me, but not quite for the same reasons. I have gained quite a bit of weight recently and have become convinced that I shall cause the bed to collapse one day soon whilst the cat is under there or DH is standing too close and he will surely lose all of his toes Shock Blush Hmm

I do have a rather fabulous imagination. Perhaps I shall focus on big, strong, helpful monsters under there holding the bed frame up so it can't collapse!

Aspiringcatlady · 08/03/2017 23:46

I sleep with the hallway light on... Because you just don't know what is lurking in the dark. I also have to sleep with my hands under the pillow because the finger monster likes to my fingers if I don't!

Thissideof40 · 09/03/2017 00:03

I can't sleep with the wardrobe open or any kind of gap in the curtains. And when I get into bed I get straight under the covers to hide my legs away from any monsters waiting to grab them. I also hate it when the bulb has gone in my lamp as flicking the main light switch by the door and legging it to your bed in the dark is equally as scary.

nannybeach · 09/03/2017 08:44

Scared of the dark!

HappyFlappy · 09/03/2017 09:17

Perhaps I shall focus on big, strong, helpful monsters under there holding the bed frame up so it can't collapse!

Actually SoFar that is a very helpful image for me, too, though not in quite the same way.

I am also a little "chubby" (ahem Blush) - I will now envisage all of the monsters desperately trying to prevent the bed from crushing them when I lie down. If they are expending all of their energy just trying to get enough space to breathe, I should be pretty safe. (Still not going to stick a leg out, though. No point being over-confident about these things.)
