To be scared of monsters?

So when I was little I was terrified of monsters that lived under my bed, kind of like the troll in the Three Billy Goats fairy tale. I used to jump as far away as I could when getting out so they wouldn't grab my ankles.
As an adult I've always had a divan bed with draws and I'd forgotten all about it but I recently moved house and got a new bed with a regular frame and a huge 60cm gap underneath - a breading ground for loads of monsters. This stupid irrational fear has resurfaced and I can't sit on the edge of the bed or let my feet dangle. It's ridiculous. I try to force myself but I get all panicky inside.
Do any of you sane MNers still have any childhood fears?

My dad made up a 'spell' that got rid of monsters. Works a treat so I'll share it with you.

'Monsters, monsters go away and dont come back another day'

You say it a couple of times and they never come back Smile

mortificado · 08/03/2017 12:50

I run from the bathroom and dive into the bed when I've turned the landing light off. So the murder at the end of the hall & the monsters under the bed can't get me. Dp thinks I'm a nutjob Grin

ImLadybird · 08/03/2017 12:52

Aw, thanks Fatmummy! Looks like we'll all be chanting that tonight Smile

Maybe somebody should invent under-bed lighting - problem solved!

I saw a program where somebody would roll a ball underneath their bed and out the other side to make sure there were no monsters lurking.

Laulou87 · 08/03/2017 13:12

I've always been terrified of the goblins from the Labyrinth film - I still can't watch it and won't have any limbs hanging out of bed incase they're there! (For the same reason I refused to dress my son in a lovely red and white striped outfit he had when he was baby - because obviously the goblin king would come and steal him 😬) some things just never leave you!

SecretWitch · 08/03/2017 13:29

Empty under bed spaces are terrifying. When I was about 7, I was sure there were demons under my bed. I would lie still and feel them poking the bed spring. I heard them scuttling around, obviously they were demons of the small sort. I would shout for my dad to come get me.

I never sleep with feet out of duvet. I once felt something grab my big toe. Can't say if I was dreaming or not but it scared the bejeezus out of me.

liz70 · 08/03/2017 13:36

God, I never realised just how many other people are also scared of mirrors and windows in the dark!

charliebear78 · 08/03/2017 13:42

Aw my son is called Toby and I thought dressing him in a red and white striped all in one was both cute and hilarious when he was a babe-see what I did there????
Anyway I have been laughing at all of these posts-UNTIL later on when I am brushing my teeth in the mirror!!!
When I go to the loo in the night I have to pass the top of the stairs and always have it in my head that something will be crawling up creepy Samara stylee from The Ring!!!
When my Partner is at home I just settle for dashing back across the top of the stairs and casually walking into the bedroom IN THE DARK!!!(I am being too polite not putting lights on aren't I ?)
When my partner is working away,I turn my bedroom lamp and the hallway light on and peer down the stairs first then dash across the gap..I am a year off my Fortieth and should know better!

Ever since my sister put her face in front of mine and I woke up to it (I was about 10), I have to sleep with my heads under the covers.
After I gave birth to DS, I was asleep in the hospital bed but because I had DS in the bay and I wanted to be "alert", I kept my head out. Half way through the night, I heard a noise and gently opened my eyes, where I saw a nurse's face a few inches away from mine, and I did the most loudest shriek. It was that loud I'm pretty sure I woke the ward up, and to make it worse I then whimpered for about 5 seconds until I worked out where I was. The poor nurse was mortified and kept apologising profusely, saying that she just wanted to change a setting on the machine behind my bed. I felt like a complete prat!!

liz70 · 08/03/2017 15:48

"my heads"

Hmm You're a fine one to talk about monsters!

LittleMissUpset · 08/03/2017 16:11

I have to sleep with a cover on, even in summer, as otherwise a monster or ghost will grab my feet!

The famous five also scared me, was the face in the window in a thunderstorm? I can't look out the downstairs windows if it's dark and thundering as I remember reading about a face at the window in the dark in a lightning flash!

I am terrified of clowns and will not be able to open my wheelie bin now without worrying about a clown after the earlier comment!

I'm also now scared of my patio doors in the dark in case someone knocks!

I now have even more phobias after reading this thread Confused

wornoutboots · 08/03/2017 16:16

moths and butterflies.

charliebear78 · 08/03/2017 16:19

SuperTrumper · 08/03/2017 16:50

Liz Grin Grin Grin I wondered who you were talking to then until I reread my post!

aintnobodygottimefodat · 08/03/2017 18:05

I have to sleep with the covers over my head so the ghosts don't whisper in my ears Blush

NKFell · 08/03/2017 18:13

I'm scared to sleep under the covers in case a monster smothers me.

Whiskeywithwater · 08/03/2017 18:17

Of course ... I have to take a running jump in case there's snakes under the bed still. Also can't put my feet down to bottom of bed when I'm first get in for same reason (blame an episode of Tales of the Unexpected for both). I am 45 this year ...,

Yellowbird54321 · 08/03/2017 18:24

I'm scared of windows in the dark too Blush
If I go to the loo in the night I am always compelled to look down the stairwell on the way and always half expect / dread seeing someone (axe murderer type) standing there looking up at me Shock

LittleMissUpset · 08/03/2017 18:28

I saw a short film on here once, it only last a couple of minutes but it was terrifying, I will see if I can find it, it took me a few goes to get to the end of it!

LittleMissUpset · 08/03/2017 18:30

OK DO NOT WATCH THIS IF YOU ARE EASILY SCARED!

THIS IS YOUR WARNING!

I used to hear witches in my ears, now i know it was the sound of my heart thumping as i used to be scared every night, i once woke up at maybe 9/10 with my bedroom curtains open and a shadow of a witch was on my wall which ive never forgotten, also scared of wardrobes most of my life thanks to my brother hiding in them, and also under my bed again thanks to my brother hiding under and grabbing my ankles, also the irrational fear of evil women ghosts chasing me upstairs if im going up when everyone's already asleep,

I'm glad it's not just me!!! I'm scared of the dark, sometimes I have to sleep with the lamp on, terrified of the slenderman.

LisaC7 · 08/03/2017 19:03

I woke the other night to see David Bowies face on my ceiling. Freaked me out at first. Was so convinced I considered taking a picture Hmm
