Pro Rata Salary question

pinkstinks · 07/03/2017 20:37

If you saw a job advertised at £25000 pro rata 28 hours per week, when you received your offer letter and it told you your annual take home salary, what would you expect this to be?

Thanks in advance!

Have had a look at the calculator. They haven't given me their full time hours so I don't know until I call the kettle tomorrow. I feel sick

OP posts:
pinkstinks · 07/03/2017 20:53

28 hours a week

I'd see if you can take your notice back and point out to the new job people that you feel that you've been deceived.

Not sure why you thought it would be more than your current job though, did you not realise what pro rata meant?

pinkstinks · 07/03/2017 20:56

Yes I understand pro rata
Current
24k 29 hours a week

New
£25k 28 hours a week

Thought it would be around the same maybe based on information I have been given

bunnylove99 · 07/03/2017 20:56

Yes. But what are your shifts/hours per day? Are you working 4 days per week when others are working 5 or have you asked for late starts etc. ?

pinkstinks · 07/03/2017 20:57

Four days a week when others are workin five

OP posts:
turbohamster · 07/03/2017 20:57

I don't think it will be a typo as that's the exact pro rata amount you'd get for a 28 hour week 25,000 was fulltime 40 hours

pinkstinks · 07/03/2017 20:57

Fridays off

OP posts:
pinkstinks · 07/03/2017 20:58

Ok wow. This is awful.

OP posts:
turbohamster · 07/03/2017 20:59

should be an if in there

you'd get for a 28 hour week if 25,000 was fulltime 40 hours

EmmaC78 · 07/03/2017 20:59

How many hours are you working each day?

Ele13 · 07/03/2017 21:00

If it's 4 days per week, then it makes no sense. If it's a 40hr week, then you should be being paid for 32 hrs not 28. If it's a 35 he week then you should be being paid 80% salary, not under 75%. If they are not paying you for lunch when they pay full timers then this is illegal.

If you are working 1 hr less each day and only working 4 days then this is correct.

BeansMcCready · 07/03/2017 21:01

It's worth talking to the new company and explaining your situation and the calculation you had made given the information provided up front, and asking if there is any flexibility given your skills and experience. It's scary to do, but most companies (even charities) want their employees to feel comfortable with the salary they start on - even if they can't make up the short fall it's possible that a compromise could be reached

FourToTheFloor · 07/03/2017 21:02

Why did you hand in your notice before seeing the new agreement? Too late now but for others it's rule no.1 in recruitment!

Hope you can take your resignation back.

WankersHacksandThieves · 07/03/2017 21:03

Well, if you are working the same hours per day as the rest and only just working 4 days instead of 5 that works out at a 35 hour week not 40.

Also, the 24K for your current job is already pro rated if your take home is £19k+ so the full time would be higher, probably closer to £30k

bunnylove99 · 07/03/2017 21:04

I am pretty confident they have worked it out wrong. Unless you are working 7 hours per day when others are working 8 hours per day they have used wrong calc. They are paying your colleagues for lunch but not you!! Please someone else come on and set this straight!

carelesswhisper27 · 07/03/2017 21:05

OP I'm sorry but you have misunderstood what pro rata means. It generally means the salary advertised is for the full time hours and will be reduced 'pro rata' based on the number of hours in your contract. I hope you can retract your notice. Flowers

Gabilan · 07/03/2017 21:05

I'd calculate 17.5k based on a 40 hour week. If you work on it being a 40hr week then if they drop it to a 37hr week you're pleasantly surprised. The other way round you're disappointed.

It sounds as if your old job was more or less .8 whereas your new one is .7. Ask how quickly you could get a wage rise/ progress up the ranks.

bunnylove99 · 07/03/2017 21:05

Thanks Ele13. (Cross post!). Exactly

CactusFred · 07/03/2017 21:08

I was eyeing a job today until I saw that full-time was 45hours. No thanks.

OP I hope the letter is a typo

pinkstinks · 07/03/2017 21:09

Oh god this is too much in such a fool. I want so pleased to be getti. Out. There.
My current is based in :35 hours I think and this must be 40.

I know what pro rata means I do.
But how can they have based on 40 and not said?

I think I'm even more confused.

Sorry I know you are trying to help and it's my fault for getting ahead of myself

OP posts:
QGMum · 07/03/2017 21:10

I agree with Ele13 and others that they've made a mistake if you are working four full days.

pinkstinks · 07/03/2017 21:10

It will be four days a week they said

TalkingofMichaelAngel0 · 07/03/2017 21:11
