To be annoyed by the constant farting

(Lighthearted and can't even be bothered to nc)

So, I think DP may be harbouring a dead body in his gut! He bloody stinks and it's not just occasionally.

I'm sick of the house smelling like eggs, everytime I walk into a room where he's been it's almost guaranteed it will stink.

Should I just cut my losses and LTB?! Or buy an air freshener to stick to his arse Grin

Does anyone else have to suffer the near constant smell of sulphur? It's not normal is it? It genuinely really annoys me though.

"I, however, can't hold anything in long enough to be good mannered, and stuff "just gets out".
It's weapons grade . . . blush"

Yep, I wouldn't make it in time to the toilet and would need to stay there all day when I get an attack of gas. There's no easy solution.

LittleCandle · 07/03/2017 12:11

DF was utterly repulsive in this direction, especially when he lived on his own. He seemed to be able to moderate it a bit when he was with the family. However, the stench was truly appalling and he seemed quite proud of it. I do remember, when I was a teenager, him telling me that he could hardly bear to sit beside himself one evening because of the smell. It really gave me the boak! Oddly, I don't think he was as bad towards the end of his life, but I have no idea why.

Oh, and i would LTB. The thought makes me feel quite squeamish.

southall · 07/03/2017 12:18

His diet isn't terrible, plenty of fruit and veg

Certain Fruit and veg can cause farts.

People would really leave their partner over smelly farts? Is mumsnet just a gathering for all the easily offended these days? Really though, leaving the person you love because their fart doesn't smell nice? I can't believe what I read sometimes.

blankmind · 07/03/2017 12:35

Probiotics, drastically cut his sugar and carbs.
You will notice a vast difference.

BarbarianMum · 07/03/2017 12:38

Constant hideous farting is really unpleasant for all concerned (I know, I've been there Blush). I'm very glad dh didn't leave me, but equally I sort treatment when I realised it wasn't normal. OPs dh needs to tackle this.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 07/03/2017 12:42

I put a fibre limit on DH as he was eating that much our house reeked and I got sick of every room smelling like shit Angry YANBU

Borrowed I think the word 'lighthearted' in the initial post does say quite a bit.

SomethingBorrowed · 07/03/2017 13:06

Of course not.
But I would never have married DH in the first place if he was letting out smelly farts in my presence AND refused to do anything about it. I mean, medical condition aside, most of the time you can choose to hold it in or let it go, so if my partner decided that he couldn't be bothered to hold it in in my presence, I would have seen that as a lack of respect and I really don't think I would have married him.

YouJumpIJumpJack · 07/03/2017 13:11

Well I was looking for an excuse to get a new fancy candle...

I think I will try and get him to the gp or at least think about his diet. Like I said, I've thought for a while that he has an intolerance.

Might have to come up with a reward system to stop him farting in bed Wink

Charcoal tablets apparently work to absorb 'excess gas' in the bowel and reduce farting. My long suffering mum tried them on my exceedingly gassy dad and they did work. I think she got them from Holland &Barrett

I expect you can also use the spent ones to fuel the Aga as well so win-win all round for MNers. Collecting them might be problematic though.

The other night when I was asleep, DH farted and the smell actually woke me up. So grim!

Applebite · 07/03/2017 14:11

Charcoal biscuits are what you give to farty dogs, can't see why it wouldn't work on people too!!

I think it's a question of fact and degree. Some farts can't be helped. Some smells can't be helped. But constant stinky farts might need attention, be that the GP or diet.

DB used to be a horrific and prolific farter. He cut out Diet Coke and cut down on beer and there was a big improvement!

Gwenhwyfar · 07/03/2017 14:19

"most of the time you can choose to hold it in or let it go"

I've never been able to hold it in, so don't assume that someone's inconsiderate if they fart in your presence.

PollytheDolly · 07/03/2017 14:28

Cut out bread and cheese, no fizzy drinks, plenty of fluid, actimel drink and yoghurt, avoid red meat and eat brown rice, pasta instead of white. Porridge for breakfast and a supply of wind-eze tablets. Cured.

Worked on my DH and I've lost 8lb in the process by eating the same.

GatoradeMeBitch · 07/03/2017 14:51

I get very windy if I eat certain things. Sometimes I want to at them and I take activated charcoal, it helps.

But if he doesn't know the cause, a trip to the doctor should be in order. You could also try a course of probiotics?

yoohooitsme · 07/03/2017 16:26

A cheapie candle will do the trick no need for fancy scent - use one from the bag of little round white candles (super good value but have never used) you got in IKEA (everyone has one of those right?)

Or how about these - I can't vouch for them but worth a try perhaps!

SomethingBorrowed · 07/03/2017 16:33

Gwenhwyfar I was wondering if someone was going to say that. Fair enough.
My theory that most people have control is based on the fact that you rarely hear/smell someone fart when it is obvious it would be them (for ex only two people in one room) whereas you can often hear/smell it when people know they are anonymous (elevator filled with people etc) which led me to believe most people choose to hold it in when it would be embarrassing for them.

Gwenhwyfar · 07/03/2017 17:14

SomethingBorrowed - I can control the sound, as I think can most people, but the only way of dealing with the smell is by walking away as it happens, which is not always possible. Of course, if I could control it, I would.

Gwenhwyfar · 07/03/2017 17:16

"A cheapie candle will do the trick"

Even just lighting a match (but not right by his bum!).

Gwenhwyfar · 07/03/2017 17:17

Polly - windeze doesn't work on me. I think it's simeticone and all the other anti flatulence tablets have the same active ingredient. I use charcoal, but not sure whether it really works.

HighwayDragon1 · 07/03/2017 17:17

I get windy if I eat mango or apples, you need to find his trigger foods!
