To wonder how on earth Katy Perry made it?

She is truly crap. I saw something on tv recently where she was live and it was shocking how bad she actually was. I know there are other who are like her and who still made it but I can't find anything redeeming about her. Even with auto tune she still sounds bad. Or maybe I am just a bitch Confused Is anyone else as baffled as me?

pickled its fine to love ONJ. Music is like that. Its personal and one person's joy is another's earache.

There are lots of accusations thrown about re who can sing and who can't. Who needs help and who doesn't. I have heard lots of live bands and singers over the decades. Hundred and hundreds. Clearly some are studio bands rather than live ones and not always the ones you expect.

Personally, for me, the purity of a voice is not always what makes someone worth listening to.

Billie Holiday didn't have a huge range, didn't have a sweet voice but she ranks as my top female artist of all time.
No one can say that Maria Carey and Celine Dion can't sing but they do nothing for me.

Can anyone on here please share my love for Johnny Mathis?
His voice is delightful. Anyone? Anyone!! :)

I'm not just in to easy listening stuff. I love Siouxise and the Banshees, The Damned and The Stranglers :)
It doesn't have to be melodic vocals, I appreciate the performance and the other bits.

I'm not into dance routines, miming and machines that alter vocals.

Am I just old and out of touch? :)

Fontella · 02/03/2017 19:39

Can't say as I've paid much attention to her at all.

They all seem the same to me, basic peurile pop songs that I've heard a thousand times before in one guise or another, and lots of prancing and posing with loads of backing dancers. From Janet Jackson to Jennifer Lopez to Madonna to Katy Perry and Taylor Swift - the whole lot of them it's the same thing - just different shapes and sizes.

I'd rather someone with the voice of the late, great Dusty Springfield, or Alison Moyet - who can just stand there and sing, and I mean really sing, not auto-tuned over produced warbling. I find that far more entertaining than all the bare flesh and prancing about.

But of the modern bunch the one who absolutely astounds me that she has been successful is Ellie Goulding. Can't sing, can't dance, no personality or anything at all to hold the attention when she performs and crap songs. I don't get it and never will.

Coloursthatweremyjoy · 02/03/2017 19:43

I'm not sure about her personally.

Just an aside, reading this her live performances seem inconsistent. I'd be willing to blame that on the sound engineer. When I see live performances you can absolutely tell if the singer cannot hear themselves. It's really really hard to stay in key if you can't hear the sounds your making. And I dont sing professionally by a long shot. It must be a million times worse when there is crowd and a huge band.

Yep, I like a bit of Johnny Mathis - not least because he was one of my mum's favourites. When she was ill last year (she died in June), I would spend many an hour sitting with her listening to her Johnny Mathis records, along with her other favourites - Nat King Cole and Jim Reeves.

If you like Johnny Mathis - you might also like Aaron Neville. He's got that same sort of vibrato. If you haven't come across him - check him out - full 'best of' album here:

greenthings · 02/03/2017 19:57

oh yes pickled cauliflower I get what you mean. Lots of the older female stars had very distinctive, lovely voices - and songs.

I couldn't tell Rhianna from Beyonce from Katy Perry from Adele.

In the male corner we have Andy Williams and Sinatra and so forth. Nothing to compare with that now.

dustarr73 · 02/03/2017 19:59

Im sick of the slagging Madonna gets. She wasnt the best singer starting out,but she has come on leaps and bounds. Her rendition of En Vie En Rose is beautiful.

There are people who are better singers but Mariah and Celine are very dated.I dont like them.

OnHold · 02/03/2017 20:46

Some of you on here sound like your mothers.

AnyFucker · 02/03/2017 20:53

No. My mother loves Joe McElderry.

ephemeralfairy · 02/03/2017 20:56

Mine likes Bruno Mars Grin

TathitiPete · 02/03/2017 21:32

I think her talents lie more towards the songwriting side than the singing. Her voice sounds very stretched, even after the 'studio magic' has been applied.

PickledCauliflower · 03/03/2017 01:43

I will have a listen to Aaron Neville.

I don't want to give my ancient age away, but my mum listened to Mario Lanza! I'm not not knocking Mario - he was fab

As well as being a big Buzzcocks fan - I do love a bit of Barry
Manilow..

PickledCauliflower · 03/03/2017 01:49

Sorry to hear that you lost your Mum Fontella.
Music can be a great comfort, as it creates strong memorie. Sadness as well as joy, but I find that the sadness passes with time.

ItShouldHaveBeenJingleJess · 03/03/2017 01:55

I've got crap taste in music. I still love Busted (before they became McBusted). Also Cascada and various other dodgy Euro Pop stuff. The cheesier the better. I do wish I could be a bit more sophisticated but at 42, I don't think it's its going to happen.....

GirlOverboard · 03/03/2017 02:16

She's attractive, has lots of personality, writes (or co-writes) all her own material and works with talented producers like Max Martin and Dr Luke. Her songs are catchy and she's a decent singer and performer. What more do you need to be a successful popstar?

And a bit of instrument playing wouldn't go amiss

She plays guitar:

MakeItStopNeville · 03/03/2017 02:35

I saw her in a really small NYC theater and she was fantastic! This was around the I kissed a girl era.

Me either - if I sound like my mum, then I'm proud of it, because she was a helluva woman!

My nana loved Mario Lanza .... and as we are Welsh, growing up, the wondrous Ivor Emmanuel was a great favourite!

(shamelessly hijacking Katy Perry thread to sneak in a mention of Ivor Emmanuel).

FooFighter99 · 03/03/2017 12:10

I like her music, but she cannot annunciate to save her life! My 5 year old DD is OBSESSED with her song Roar, but insists that the lyrics are "cos I am a Cheer Girl" and not " Cos I am a/the Champion" which infuriates me!!!

ThisAintALoveSong · 03/03/2017 13:49

Someone above dissing Little Mix. They are my current guilty pleasure Blush

brexitstolemyfuture · 28/05/2017 10:38

She's not too far away from a breakdown similar to Britney in 2007 if recent reports are to be believed.

I don't think this is old enough to be a zombie, but she doesn't seem quite right at the moment.

araiwa · 28/05/2017 10:45

same as all the other manufactured pop music types- looks good but couldnt sing her way out of a wet paperbag without autotune
