Cottage pie AIBU

blondieblonde · 01/03/2017 14:17

AIBU to cook a cottage pie now, give the kids some, and then bung it back in the oven later for grown ups?

I seem to remember something about not cooking meat twice. Is that an old wives tale?

Love cottage pie, haven't had it for ages, really fancy it now.

Cottage pie sex, not so much.

SistersOfPercy · 01/03/2017 15:02

Be fine.
Second day cottage pie is always lovely too, I plate up a small portion and zap it for lunch the following day.

Dahlietta · 01/03/2017 15:05

Sorry if you clicked on this thinking it would be a question about some kind of cottage pie sex or other more exciting issue!

I clicked on it hoping it would provide me with an opportunity to complain about the abhorrence of cottage pie. As a starting point, I'm not a fan of mince - always reminds me of maggots - but, more importantly, the most important and best thing about a pie is pastry. How is Cottage Pie even allowed to call itself a pie, replacing the best part of a pie with... potato?! Oh, sorry, I complained anyway...

How do people deal with leftovers or batch cooking if they don't reheat stuff?

diddl · 01/03/2017 15:07

I thought that you should only reheat once?

Dumdedumdedum · 01/03/2017 15:12

Is cottage pie sex a thing?

derxa · 01/03/2017 15:22

Ready meals are already cooked. Then you reheat them

SheSaidHeSaid · 01/03/2017 15:28

I do this all the time except it's the leftovers that I then have for lunch the following day.

Verbena37 · 01/03/2017 15:30

As a general rule, you shouldn't reheat meat dishes twice.
So cook the shepherds pie, split into servings. Reheat kids portion if you're cooking it earlier in day then reheat your portion later.
Don't then reheat again any leftover food from those reheated portions.

Notso · 01/03/2017 15:36

Cooking is not reheating, it's cooking.

Cooking, cooling, reheating is fine. It's only reheating once.

Cooking, cooling, reheating, cooling, reheating, not recommended.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/03/2017 15:43

Reheated cottage pie is even better than the first time round. If there's anything left after that I fry it up for breakfast with an egg on top.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 01/03/2017 15:44

It will be fine - we often put a portion aside for DH to take to work the following day.

ChrisYoungFuckingRocks · 01/03/2017 15:48

I've always reheated everything, I'm 45 and it's never harmed me in any way.

'They' say it's very dangerous to reheat rice (no idea why), but I've always done that also, and never had any ill effects.

Serialweightwatcher · 01/03/2017 15:54

I'd reheat the later portions in the microwave if you have one, individually - it takes so long to reheat in the oven and will probably dry out during the process

Chloe1984 · 01/03/2017 15:57

Gutted and shocked that this wasn't about cottage pie sex.

InformalRoman · 01/03/2017 16:01

You can reheat rice if you cook it, chill it quickly and then refrigerate, and reheat thoroughly until it is steaming.

Rice is a problem when it's been left standing at room temperature for a long time, as bacteria can grow in it which is then heat resistant.

notangelinajolie · 01/03/2017 16:07

Nothing wrong with reheating cottage pie as long as you make sure it is piping hot before serving.

I eat mine early with DD - I really don't like reheated cottage pie, the potatoes loose their fluffyness and the gravy dries up. DH has to eat on his own on cottage pie night.

HarmlessChap · 01/03/2017 16:10

Is cottage pie sex a thing?

I hope not it sounds like it risks scalding sensitive areas

Have heard gay friends refer to cottaging though. I was never really sure what it meant and suspected that my life would not have been enriched by an in depth explanation!

maddiemookins16mum · 01/03/2017 16:14

Me too, always get a spare portion out of it, freeze it and send with DP to work for his tea.

  • I did think this thread would be about adding sweetcorn or diced avacado to the recipe 😊
HarmlessChap · 01/03/2017 16:15

DW & I often eat at different times and re-heat food like cottage pie. Despite conventional wisdom I've reheated the same food more than once and never experienced any ill effects. So long is its piping hot before serving (I use a digital food thermometer to ensure that its over 80°C) I can't see how bacteria would survive.

ilovegin112 · 01/03/2017 16:22

Just reheat properly and you will be fine, the only mince that can make you ill ( other than chicken etc) I have heard is quorn I read somewhere it can make some people really really ill

Botanicbaby · 01/03/2017 16:23

I reheat all the time, no probs. YANBU.

YABU to start an intriguing thread title I was hoping to hear of scandalous ingredients that your DP added as the norm or similar Wink

BitOutOfPractice · 01/03/2017 16:49

Botanicbaby I thought the same. I thought the op was going to suggest adding sweetcorn or some such abomination. Like triflegate all over again

crystalgall · 01/03/2017 17:06

God knows how all us Asians have survived eating leftover rice.

36 years of eating and reheating rice (more than once!). We don't make small portions cos you can't really make a small decent tasting biryani. It's got tonne a big pot! That means lots
Of leftovers and lots
Of reheating. And we leave it out all day too!

I have never heard anyone tell me they've been ill from eating
Reheated rice. That's purely anecdotal of course and obviously the bacteria and all that is true of course but seriously how do you think they survive in India!

BettyBaggins · 01/03/2017 17:16

Recooking may require gravy. Agree with other posters about nonsense regarding reheating. Ready made meals are all cooked all ready fgs!

You have triggered a cottage pie memory for me. As a kid I didn't like onions and my DG would only add them to half the pie and then when 'forking' the mash she would put my initial on my end and a big G for Granny on hers. Oh how I loved my DG!
