DS is in year 7 and needs grey socks for school. Boys have to wear trousers.

The bit of these that you can see are grey, only the toes and heel and very top are purple... The only reason it was spotted is because he hurt his foot on the stairs and took his shoe off when seeing school medical person, she ticked his uniform card for having incorrect uniform...

AIBU for thinking it's ridiculous?

Yanbu. I send my DS in similar socks to those. The bit you can see is the right colour and plain grey socks are a pita to find round here unless it's the start of the school year

MusicToMyEars800 · 01/03/2017 12:13

DeleteOrDecay just seen your post, I have pretty much posted the same thing you did.

guinnessgirl · 01/03/2017 12:19

Definitely complain. That's utterly ridiculous. On a separate note... Fucking BRA COLOUR? Angry that has just brought back long-buried memories of my time at school Hmm

Porygon · 01/03/2017 12:20

definitely complain! idiots.

RachelRagged · 01/03/2017 12:21

That is crazy

One of my DSs has to wear grey socks and some are similar to yours. Some even have multi-coloured stripes at bottom (though granted, that is covered by his shoes).

IsabelleSE19 · 01/03/2017 12:29

YANBU. If your DS misses a school trip because of that it is a travesty. I would definitely complain.

AuntJane · 01/03/2017 12:38

Owlah They monitor bra colour because "you can see it through the school shirt if it isn't a plain light colour".

So what if the pupil has dark skin? A plain white bra would stand out clearly.

carabos · 01/03/2017 12:39

I can guarantee that my colour boind ds2 would not be able to see that those socks have a different colour top to the rest of the foot. They would look like shades of grey to him. Perhaps that's why your DS wears them eh? Wink

WorshipTheGourd · 01/03/2017 12:42

The sock colour has NOTHING to do with his educational capacity/achievements.
Absurd.
Complain!
(ps I used these type of socks for my ds.)

They are BUSINESS SOCKS. POTUS, PM, ArchBishop of Canterbury etc ALL could wear these socks.

AugustRose · 01/03/2017 12:49

FFS that is ridiculous.

OopsDearyMe · 01/03/2017 12:52

Er YABU you are supposed to provide your son with GREY socks not GREY and purple socks. Rules are rules that is what the schools and you need your child to learn, no excuse or alternative. Its got noting to do with what the item is .. Its the principle involved. Its easy enough to get grey socks so its just lazy

oldbirdy · 01/03/2017 12:55

Rididculous. My son wears socks with brightly coloured feet and plain black leg part, so we can tell them apart from my husband's. No one has ever complained. We get them from here as we like the idea of a quiet rebellion

1frenchfoodie · 01/03/2017 12:55

seems OTT, at very least hope you can negotiate a simple warning rather than sanctions (missing trip) for a first offence.

IamFriedSpam · 01/03/2017 12:55

Ridiculous! Which jobsworth made an issue out of this? I would complain if it might mean him missing a trip.

Megatherium · 01/03/2017 12:56

The day we start teaching children that "rules are rules" and common sense must never be applied to their interpretation is the day we start teaching them that totalitarianism is acceptable and adults are stupid.

Neolara · 01/03/2017 12:58

That's absolutely ridiculous.

bigearsthethird · 01/03/2017 12:59

Thats insane! The school is being very unreasonable.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/03/2017 12:59

My DD2's school is obsessed with uniform. I mean obsessed and this is the kind of shit they would pull as well. Utterly utterly ridicukous

Megatherium · 01/03/2017 12:59

You are going to have to approach this terribly tactfully, and not steam in telling them not to be so stupid. I'd suggest (a) a gentle suggestion that maybe the medical lady didn't understand the rules properly and, if necessary, (b) a request that your DS shouldn't be penalised for your assumption that the rules included a sensible degree of flexibility.

WorshipTheGourd · 01/03/2017 12:59

OopsDearyMe

but, what if they are BAD rules?
It has nothing to do with education, the King himself could wear them, they are not signed up to the Army etc
It is nonsense on stilts!

MrsCharlesBrandon · 01/03/2017 13:03

My DDs have black socks with a coloured sole for High school, never been an issue. 4 people in my house have to wear black socks, how on earth am i supposed to tell them apart otherwise?

OP YANBU

ExitStage · 01/03/2017 13:14

Everyday there's always one, and today OopsDearyMe, you're that one!

People who obey every pettifogging rule are just the most boring people. Subtle rebellion is good!

windypolar · 01/03/2017 13:14

This is just plain ridiculous, I don't think anybody would disagree. The uniform rule has been followed to extremes.

I'm an ex teacher and I wouldn't have been so small minded as to bring it to his attention. And what on earth is a uniform card anyway Shock Is that standard?

AngelsWithSilverWings · 01/03/2017 13:16

Ridiculous! All of my son's school socks have a pattern on the toe and heel so that I can tell them apart from mine and DH's socks.

I'd be writing to the head about changing the policy and demanding that his card be wiped clean!

These school rules are mad. My son has been banned from wearing his watch to school because the school has a no "smart" watch policy. DS's watch isn't a smart watch but looks a bit like one. Even after I explained to the teacher that it was just a normal watch and can't be linked to a phone he was still not asked not to wear it in case it causes confusion!

windypolar · 01/03/2017 13:16

There is always one, and in this the case only one, and that is Ohdearyme Hmm
