Secondary school lunch box police

LemonDrizzleDisco · 01/03/2017 06:24

DDs secondary school has started checking all the packed lunches at registration.
I know lots of secondary school students but sweets and chocolate etc on the way to school but surely at that age It's their choice.

Dd was told off for having too much in her lunch box.

Peanut butter sandwich with brown bread
A small banana
Strawberries
A few grapes
And less than a handful of raisins and dried coconut flakes.

The canteen serves things like sausages and mash ,cake and custard, sandwiches and doughnuts etc. Aibu to think this is unfair ?

Out of her lunch box contents list avocado is the healthiest item 😳 They contain good fats that we need. The rest has quite a lot of sugar albeit mostly naturally occurring sugar but volume wise doesn't sound too much

kateandme · 02/03/2017 21:45

disgusting behaviour!!kids at this age maybe more so,they are so vunerable and sunure of themselves at this age.especilly food looks wise etc.to mock or discourage or tell them whats wrong with their food or eating habits is dangerous.
group or class classes n healthy lifetsyles and feelin good but not this
they have no right to lord it over luncboxes or meals like this.
they should be caring for these kids
plus your lunch was way on the side of healthy!!

kateandme · 02/03/2017 21:47

send in an empty/spare one with get the fuck out of my childs lunch and go have a mars bar twat heads.

Deidre21 · 03/03/2017 03:00

Avocado - unhealthy - that made me laugh, clearly an uneducated person with no idea about basic food nutrition. My 6yr old has avocado and chicken sandwiches once a week for her packed lunch and she knows that avocados are healthy.
Sounds to me like they're trying to get more people to eat the unappealing (my opinion) school lunches.

Too much?
Poppycock!

LemonDrizzleDisco · 03/03/2017 15:44

I followed up with the school today and after 5 days of lunch checks they've given up ! Head of pastoral was furious about what was said when DDs lunch was inspected .

Fantastic, so pleased they have come to their senses.

TitaniasCloset · 03/03/2017 19:15

Ooh! Do tell us what she said Grin

Great that they are wising up now.

LemonDrizzleDisco · 03/03/2017 19:24

The phone call was something along the lines of this

Miss Lemon,I am extremely embarrassed with the way Little Lemon was treated during the lunch check the other day. I want to take this opportunity to apologise on behalf of the school and the form tutor.

*then I mentioned how telling a teenager that they are eating too much could lead to unhealthy relationships with food

Miss Lemon at School we take the wellbeing and pastoral care of students very seriously and after 'trialling' the lunch check this week ,we will no longer be having them as this is not the way forward to promote healthy eating.

Again apologies and thank you for calling Miss Lemon

The phone call was from a senior member of staff not the form tutor . Dd said form tutor hasn't said a word to dd since (she usually has a little conversation or checks up on dd )

Well done!!!!

IamFriedSpam · 03/03/2017 19:50

Ha well done, Glad they're stopping the madness.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 03/03/2017 22:47

Wow! Result!

flumpybear · 04/03/2017 11:47

Great news! I'd have a word with the form tutor it was him/her who was in the wrong so should at least be the grown up and talk to your child ffs!

tinytemper66 · 04/03/2017 12:00

I am surprised there is time to check. I have no time to police this. Ridiculous! PS....I didn`t RTWT.

LorLorr2 · 14/03/2017 15:00

Ok. This makes my blood boil!!

I would just love to see the qualifications on nutrition that these 'inspectors' have. I'm sure warm apple crumble and custard from the canteen would be classed as ok because it's old fashioned and traditional, right? But woah, an avocado, bit too daring for them. I would have to hold myself back from making an outraged phone call haha

TaylorKS · 14/03/2017 23:04

For a growing, active teen that is NOT too much lunch. And I'd be willing to be that the people screening lunches expect girls to eat less than the boys. As a former EMT I'd suggest that the school district stop this practice immediately. It's not only intrusive into personal family decisions, they do not have medical histories of these children, nor the expertise to be making decisions like this. It is not only a form of bullying and intimidation, since they are going through lunches and not looking for anything illegal or dangerous weapons, it's also violates the Constitutional rights of the child. Yes, children do have rights. Personally, I'd get a lawyer and put a stop to this for all the children.

The Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects personal privacy, and every citizen's right to be free from unreasonable government intrusion into their persons, homes, businesses, and property -- whether through police stops of citizens on the street, arrests, or searches of homes and businesses.

TheFuckitBuckit · 16/03/2017 09:47

It sounds like the form tutor has had her arse kicked.

Well done to you and little lemon!😀

LittleIda · 16/03/2017 10:07

Dd said form tutor hasn't said a word to dd since (she usually has a little conversation or checks up on dd )
She sounds quite a caring form tutor if she does this normally

Noodoodle · 16/03/2017 12:16

Well done OP. That sounds like good phone call.

We just started trialling packed lunches this week (as I found out dd literally only eats a single slice of pizza practically everyday at school, except one day when she has baked potato and cheese/beans). I was a bit worried we might get the same thing as she's been sent in with fruit, bread and butter, cold meats, crisps and a drink. She puts the crisps in the bread as a sandwich and eats the meat on it's own (doesn't like meat in sandwiches for some reason) and it's maybe a small lunch but she's a small eater, but at least is eating more than she would with school dinner! Nobody's batted an eyelid so far, she's convinced they're not bothered and that's fine!

Roomster101 · 16/03/2017 13:02

Although I'd be quite pleased if someone could stop DD buying sweets on the way to school, checking the "lunch box" seems a bit pointless as any child with half a brain of secondary school age would have hidden the unhealthy stuff somewhere else once they realise check are a possibility. It also wouldn't stop them buying stuff on the way home from school etc.
