To think this is just not in the spirit of fair parking?

Another parking one - sorry...
I live on a narrow road with residents parking. I have a residents permit and usually manage to get a parking space on the road, though usually not outside my house. This is fine, though frustrating on the occasions I have to park far away and have heavy bags.
But.... there has been a red car parked in the space right outside my house since Christmas. It has a permit so is legal but, by not moving, means the usual movement as cars come and go can't happen so it's preventing the maximum number of cars parking in the marked bay (they are not individual bays, just one long marked one that if everyone parked considerately could fit 7 cars). At least I thought it had been there since Christmas..... last night I spotted that the red car had moved, and there was a battered blue car in the space. I then later heard much banging of car doors and talking outside the house. I nosed through my curtains to see the red car back in the space, the red car's driver locking the car and getting into the blue car's passenger seat and the blue car driving round to the parking space at the rear of the house opposite me.

DH says I have parking rage unnecessarily. I think they have just committed the equivalent of putting a towel out to save a sunlounger before everyone else is up. It's just not fair play.
For completeness, the houses opposite us each have a parking space behind them. We don't, and can only park on the road. We also only have one car, not a spare one to hog a space with.
AIBU to think that saving a parking space by parking a banger there is not really on?

Very selfish. Can you watch ready to pounce if they move it?

Lovely diagram.

SoupDragon · 28/02/2017 15:27

Is the blue car taxed?

SoupDragon · 28/02/2017 15:27

Oh, hang on, you drove away in it. Bugger.

haggisaggis · 28/02/2017 15:33

I had to log in with my Ipad to see the diagram as I can't on my PC. Was definitely worth it - lovely diagram.

SuchHysteria · 28/02/2017 15:35

That's one of the best parking diagrams I've seen. It's really clear. 💯✔️🌟⭐️🌟⭐️✨🌟✨🌟✨🌟✨🌟🌟🌟🌟✨✨🌟🌟🌟

I think they are being knobs for not parking tidily. Some people are really inconsiderate. I guess you could put a really polite note on the windscreen saying that you are having trouble finding a parking space and would they mind parking up to the end of the parking bay and that you would be very grateful etc etc.

HappyFlappy · 28/02/2017 15:38

Never, ever, apologise for instigating a parking thread.

By all means apologise for not posting a diagram, but never for the thread, Grin

HappyFlappy · 28/02/2017 15:41

I would make it my life's mission to get that parking space....surely at some point both red & blue car need to be out? Once parked I would never leave, I would use public transport and walk everywhere grinjust to hang on to that space!

Are we twins separated at birth Sense?

This is exactly what I would do.

Lovely diagram - thank you very much. Lots of colours, plus a key! Superb!

HemanOrSheRa · 28/02/2017 15:48

You have my sympathy OP. We get people parking on our road. I know it's a public road and they have a right to but there is always some idiot who doesn't THINK when they park and manages to take up 2 or sometimes 3 spaces Angry.

I did actually ask one bloke to move his car along when he was parking at the same time as me. It clearly hadn't crossed his mind that he was causing a problem.

shockthemonkey · 28/02/2017 15:57

Best diagram ever.

If they have only one space behind their house though, they'll be needing to use one of the street spaces for their banger.

Yes they are being inconsiderate but hard to argue they should move. But, if they can just budge up to the very first or very last "spot" (though I appreciate the individual spots are not marked on the street) then that would allow the maximum number of others to park.

Seeing as they seem to have parked there long-term, it would be totally fair to politely request they do this at the next opportunity. The way it looks, they haven't quite left one space in front of them and that is a bit arsey.

HerOtherHalf · 28/02/2017 16:00

If it's barely moved since Christmas there is a reasonable chance it is not taxed and/or MOTed. They may have SORNed it but that requires them to keep it off the public road to be valid. Phone the police and report it as an abandoned vehicle. If it is taxed there's probably not much they can do but if it isn't they might just tow it.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 28/02/2017 16:02

There's a chap on my road who always parks inconsiderately. He has to have his car exactly positioned with his house. Problem is, this means you can only get 4 cars along. If he parked slightly over you could reasonably fit 5 cars in.
He used to reserve his 'spot' all the time. He used to use a massive van for work so if he was using the car, he'd fanny about moving the van to be in his spot. I used to fantasize about shifting my car into his spot, just at the crucial moment! Never did though, I am a chicken.
His wife was not allowed to move the car.
He retired last year - no more massive work van, yay! But woe betide you if you park in his spot! My mum did recently, she couldn't park directly outside my house as the daughter of said neighbour was there.
We went out to the car, neighbours wife was glaring at us.
We came back, parked in the same spot for the same reason, she was still glaring.
When my mum left to go home - yup, got glared at then too!
He then shifted his car back to that spot.

Inthesleeplessnightgarden · 28/02/2017 16:07

Thanks all, I think I shall write a note politely requesting that they move it forward half a car's length, right to the end of the bay, in order to make best use of the very limited parking that is available to residents.

I think it must be taxed as it's being used (maybe far more often than I previously thought now I have discovered their beach towel style trickery). It's a pretty nice newish car. But I have noticed their parking permit expires in a couple of weeks.....

I will make it my mission to get that space! And will then only give it up in some kind of emergency..... I can shop locally, walk to school, take the train to work. Indeed I could not go outside the village for weeks if I don't need to. I will go into lockdown!

How do your parking permits work. Here we get a residents which has your reg number on it. And a visitor which only has your house number. Visitor permits are for occasional use. You have a choice or buying one of each, or just one. I borrowed my mum's car a couple of years ago when mine broke down. I only had it for a couple of week until I got my new car. So used the visitors permit. I got a letter from the council warning me about using the permit for the wrong purpose.

Just wondering if you have a similar system and if they would have bothered to get 2 permits. If they are using a visitor one for the red car you could complain to the council.

Rachel0Greep · 28/02/2017 16:22

No advice, but excellent diagram!

LowDudgeon · 28/02/2017 17:57

Cigars their daughter was parked outside your house & they glared at you for parking outside theirs? What is wrong with these people??? Confused

ForalltheSaints · 28/02/2017 18:37

I am struggling with the concept of fair parking!

HappyFlappy · 28/02/2017 18:40

Nightgarden

You are aware that having posted a parking thread, you have a legal obligation to keep us updated, don't you?

With further diagrams/ descriptions of injuries/ what the judge said etc as appropriate.

TalkingofMichaelAngel0 · 28/02/2017 19:03

Sometimes I wonder wheher we need a dedicated parking forum Grin

Great diagram. Is the parking behind for their houses only? Could you park there?
Otherwise i would question the permit for permanent parking with the council.
And i would also make it my life's purpose to get that spot.

Nquartz · 28/02/2017 19:22

No advice, just wanted to compliment you on your superb diagram. I think we have a new standard to which all future diagrams must be held. Bravo

Inthesleeplessnightgarden · 28/02/2017 19:36

So flattered by the appreciative comments on my diagram. Just something I knocked up Wink.

The parking behind their houses is for those houses only. The spaces have numbers on them (I may have taken a little explore this afternoon).

I'll update should I manage to get the spot. Or to block them in. Or to get the council to rescind their permit. Or if I get a reply to the polite note I'll put on their windscreen when it stops raining.

I'll be sure to supply a diagram outlining the manouevres involved in any successful takeover. I have my camouflage colored felt pens at the ready.

Your diagram is right up there as the top parking diagram to date. Makes me want a parking drama all of my own just so I can do a diagram, not that it would be up to your standard :)

FeelingSmurfy · 07/03/2017 08:37

Love the diagram, extra points for hand drawing it and blue car / beach towel - that made me laugh Grin

Inthesleeplessnightgarden · 13/03/2017 16:23

*UPDATE!!!!

Had to share the deep sense of satisfaction I have today after coming home to find that red car had gone and the space was free! I have swept in and taken it, though parked considerately allowing for two further cars in front of mine to fill the bay optimally. Seriously considering doing an online tesco order instead of driving to Aldi tomorrow just in order to secure my position for a day.

Don't think it warrants another diagram but wanted to let you all know!*

Outstanding diagram and brilliant update. Def do an online order & perhaps place one of those stripey 'men at work' tents in the space with lots of cones etc to secure it?! Blush
