Well he sounded ok to a lot of non- south africans, so perhaps that counts for something.

Coolmama · 02/03/2007 23:53

that's like saying someone who does a really bad english accent is okay because none of the Americans will realise how bad it is.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 03/03/2007 00:09

Sigh.

Whatever.

oranges · 03/03/2007 00:47

these.films.are.fiction.....they don't have to be realistic.

ghosty · 03/03/2007 05:30

LOL at you lot
Totally agree with Batters. It is called 'acting' and yes, sometimes they are crap but sometimes they do a reasonable job.

I wonder if any of you could do better?

yellowrose · 03/03/2007 08:20

Eh no - don't think I am going to change my mind re. Hugh G, don't know him personally thank goodness, do I need to know him to comment on his acting ?

I have seen him being interviewed and unless he is "acting" when he is being interviewed, he really does come across as exactly the same as his film persona.

Johnny Depp has played English roles so often I always do a double take if I hear him talking normally with his American accent.

It doesn't really bother me tbh...and Johnny can do no wrong of course

yellowrose · 03/03/2007 10:49

Jonny Depp is fab, and one of the few very intelligent actors around. Lives in France I heard because he can't stand Hollywood/LA types. He loves British comedy, said The Fast Show was his favourite programme. That's my man !

SSShakeTheChi · 03/03/2007 10:56

Agree with yellowrose on Hugh Grant. Shame sheepish, stuttering twit in any film I've ever seen him in.

Also agree with Renee Zellweger. Think she CAN act but I can't stand her. I think it's something to do with her face, she seems to screw it up too much all the time. I find myself automatically scowling back when I watch her. It bugged me to death on Chicago. It was always such a relief when the camera was on Catherine Zeta Jones.

SSShakeTheChi · 03/03/2007 10:59

I think the problem with people playing other nationalities is that it just jarrs on you. It is so wrong. Not just the accent, also the way people move, their gestures, facial expressions and so on. The whole thing feels wrong.

Since living in Germany, I have to say I can't stand English/American films about WW2. They are SO wrong. Everything in them, the way people look, act, speak. They make me cringe. Same thing if I see German productions of those Rosamund Pilcher novels which there seem to be nauseating flood of at the moment. EVERYTHING is wrong in them.

yellowrose · 03/03/2007 11:10

TheChi - so right about most WW films, it's those fake Nazi/SS accents, sound just like that SS guy in a black leather coat in 'allo, 'allo !!!

There are loads of good German/Austrian/Swiss actors. They would happily do even a Nazi role for the right money.

I also hate it when they use a Japanese actor to play someone Chinese or vice versa. It is appalling.

expatinscotland · 03/03/2007 16:20

Leo di Caprio is BAD.

In everything.

I can't stand to watch him.

Renee is an example of When Some Nationality Mixes Go Wrong. She has a Swedish mother and Swiss German father and something is very wonky about her facial features.

Dougray Scott. WHY the F&^K did the producers of DHW make him put on that dreadful English accent?

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 03/03/2007 16:55

Do you seriously believe that most actors are unintelligent Yellowrose? The majority?!

paulaplumpbottom · 03/03/2007 16:57

The three people that the OP mentioned were very good in their roles? Does their nationality really matter?

yellowrose · 03/03/2007 18:26

Shiny - I think you are reading too much into every single one of my posts here

I love Al Pacino, brain or no brain !! I think Al is reasonably intelligent, but it is not why I like him as an actor. Jonny Depp, Robert De Nero, Gene Hackman, Richard Burton are my favourites, I would watch any of their films because they are top actors, they move me, I don't care whether they have a PhD in Physics or not !!

yellowrose · 03/03/2007 18:29

No nationality doesn't matter. I think what people here are saying is that a bad accent distracts from good acting.

Itllfalloff · 07/06/2024 08:32

Well, we have stuffed US shows with Britis so…
