anyone see The Perfume?? Set in Paris and Provence, but all had English or US drawls, ....except Dustin Hoffman playing an Italian chemist, in Paris, with an accent from somewhere in the mid-Atlantic..

yellowrose · 02/03/2007 19:26

Gosh, Hoffman as an Italian chemist...what a hoot ! Must see it !

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 02/03/2007 19:30

You disregard everything with Tom Hanks in yellowrose?? Cripes.. think you may be cutting off your nose to spite your face there; not only he is an acclaimed and accomplished actor (who will obviously not be to everybodies tastes I acknowledge), he has also been in a great many films that a are considered, generally, to be well worth watching

Pann · 02/03/2007 19:32

so quoth his agent.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 02/03/2007 19:33

(cotton wool behind my year???? Of all the fever-induced-crap I have posted today that has to be the 'best'! I meant of course "cotton wool between my ears!!" )

hana · 02/03/2007 19:35

it's not just an 'american' accent as well, loads of regional accents in the states

post-war period referred to Doris Day, Rock Hudson, James Dean time.

if one starts only "allowing" demographics to be directly relective, we would not have had "My Left Foot" as an eg......

Pann · 02/03/2007 19:40

or "reflective" even!!

DimpledThighs · 02/03/2007 19:42

it annoys me so much - esp. Bridget Jones.

The worst thing for me was when they re-dubbed the lion, the witch and the wardrobe cartoon with American accents - yes they redubbed it!!!

Pann · 02/03/2007 19:43

DT - what did they do??

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 02/03/2007 19:52

Oh dear. I am in a different league to you lot clearly. The other night I switched on the TV for something to do while straightening my hair [yawn] and the last twenty minutes of Nine Months was on Sky Movies.. (yes two of your favourites together.. Hugh Grant and Robin Williams..)..

I have seen in many times before but I cried.. literally cried with laughter as RW, in his russian (I think) vet-recently-turned-obstetrician role called a thesaurus a clitoris.. and mispronounced epidural so many times that eventually, Julianne Moore, in extreme labour, eventually rise up of the bed, purple in the face and roars "epidural arsehole!".. . I was sitting there, all on my own, crying with laughter. Haven't done that in months.. and it felt good!

I ^know" it's hardly in the same league as Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth or similar... but would/does no-one else find that type of thing funny..????

codswallop · 02/03/2007 19:57

yes

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 02/03/2007 19:59

Thank you cod.. if you are actually replying to me. I seem to be having one of my invisble nights.

Have you been in a time machine? You haven't been codswallop since the dawn of time have you? Or dawn of MN at least...

DimpledThighs · 02/03/2007 20:27

who said that???

yellowrose · 02/03/2007 21:28

No, sorry Grant isn't a good actor. He can't act, he is just HIMSELF, floppy haired Notting Hill sort, pretending to be a twit !

Yes, just imagine if Hopkins had decided to eat human flesh in his spare time, just so that he could "get into character"

southeastastra · 02/03/2007 22:36

we never seem to make hardly any films at all anyway, unless they're really poncey and will sell to america

Marina · 02/03/2007 22:51

Damian Lewis and Marc Warren did fine in Band of Brothers - Dougray Scott hang your head in shame . I cringe every time he opens his mouth in DHW.
Usually the Brits in ER play British though sobernow (unless there is something about Scott Grimes I'm not aware of)
I have no problem with people being cast against nationality/gender/appearance etc on the whole - it's their job to be able to make a decent stab at other accents.
I do have a problem with tokenistic casting based on US box office potential. So, genuinely talented Renee Zellweger and Johnny Depp, fine - Gwyneth Paltrow and Anne Hathaway (yeah right that's the name she was born with ) not fine

Marina · 02/03/2007 22:53

We do make lots of films sea - it's just a lot of them aren't much good. Blame it on the Bellboy...Janice Beard 45wpm...Very Annie Mary...cringe cringe cringe
And some of our stuff, like Shane Meadows and Pawel Pawlikowski, who are both really talented but hardly a fun watch, are never going to appeal to most of the US.

Coolmama · 02/03/2007 23:09

effing Leonardo Di-effing-Caprio trying to do a monumentally effingly awful South African accent in Blood Diamond - makes my teeth curl!!!

sarz · 02/03/2007 23:31

Oh leo in Blood diamonds was fantastic! If i closed my eyes i though it could have been one of my south african friends!! The whole casting an american as a brit does not bother me so long as they can do it! in bridget jones i think zell-however you spell it-ziger is good, but i havent seen miss potter. does it bother you that David tenent plays doctor who?

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 02/03/2007 23:34

You don't need to apologise yellowrose, it's called a difference of opinion.. you think one thing; I think another. Fair enough. He isn't floppy haired anymore. And unless you know him persoanlly, I doubt you can comment on what aspects of his characters are "himself" or not

Coolmama · 02/03/2007 23:35

I am South African and trust me, Leo was effing awful.
