maybe I just haven't got into the hang of it yet, but I've been going for a while now, and whilst some of it is a lot cheaper than say asda, I just find some of their stuff not that great and I'm having to go to asda to buy it again

anyone else like that?

I think people are strange in that sense. Refuse to part with their money on one store yet will literally inconvenience themselves fir hours and drive miles to visit another.

Would really be interested to work out whether it was was really worth it on those cases

JustSpeakSense · 28/02/2017 07:40

Aldi is not as cheap as it used to be, I always found the inconvenience of shopping there (not finding all the items I need etc.) was outweighed by the savings I was making, but the savings don't seem that great anymore.

Also I am consistently disappointed with the shelf life of fruit & veg.

Also witnessed a disabled shopper having a real struggle at the tills (with the speed of checkout and the layout of trolley bay etc.) the till person did not handle the situation well, she was rushed along and they were quite rude to her.

So Aldi is definitely 'losing its sparkle' in my eyes Hmm

gamerchick · 28/02/2017 08:00

Yes aldis wank, please don't go anymore. Anything to avoid that feeling of wanting to ram my trolley into legs while people fanny on choosing carefully while blocking the aisle. Seriously, fucking move!

gunsandbanjos · 28/02/2017 08:14

My local Lidl has introduced self scan check outs, is so much better.
I only tend to go first thing on a Sunday morning though so it's nice and quiet Smile

In defence of Booths, which I only discovered on moving up north a couple of years ago, it's more expensive than Aldi, Tesco etc but I don't think it's as expensive as its nearest but less nice southern equivalent, Waitrose.

pourmeanotherglass · 28/02/2017 08:17

We live 3 mins walk from an Aldi, and use it for mid-week top up shops. I don't think I could do the full shop there, but there are some things we prefor the Aldi version of.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 28/02/2017 09:23

I go to Aldi because I can buy a decent sliced loaf of bread without soya in there. I can get most of my weekly basics in there, but still have to use another supermarket to buy oat milk.

I prefer Lidl, but the location and bread factor mean that I currently use Aldi more.

I've not bought meat in ASDA since the "gloop off a stick" barbeque incident. I'll go in occasionally for a random item, but it's too big, too busy and too claustrophobic with the stock piled many metres up in the air to make me want to venture in to the food area. There is no such thing as a "quick pop in" to my ASDA!

ssd · 28/02/2017 09:29

thats the thing , isnt it

either go to asda/tesco/morrisons etc and get everything, or go to aldi, get quite a lot, save some money, then drive to asda/tesco/morrisons and start again getting the rest of the stuff

its all just a bloody faff

Do you only do one shop a week then? I've never managed it as I always need to top up with stuff like milk towards the end of the week. I do a big shop in Aldi and then top up Waitrose with things they either didn't have or I have run out of. I used to get an Ocado delivery and then top up at Waitrose.

Things I discovered today that my Aldi don't seem to stock are Polenta, black treacle and golden syrup. They may have been there somewhere but I couldn't spot them. They don't have condensed milk either which is essential for flapjacks.

SoupDragon · 28/02/2017 11:54

Most people tend to shop in whatever supermarket is most convenient don't they?

Springersrock · 28/02/2017 12:04

Aldi is only at the end of our road, but I find that I can't get everything I need so have to go to Sainsbury's anyway.

It's OK for the basics like fruit, veg, meat, and stuff like that if I'm cooking from scratch, but we all hate their crisps, baked beans, fish fingers, oven chips, etc.

Also, my DD is coeliac, and whilst there's some GF stuff in our local Aldi, the range isn't that great.

Plus, they only ever have 1 or 2 tills open so the queues are horrendous

Roomster101 · 28/02/2017 12:54

I have never managed to do only one shop a week but I usually manage not to visit one for five days or so. It would be a real pain to have to go to Aldi and then another supermarket to buy all the stuff I can't get at Aldi and not worth it just to save a couple of pounds.

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/02/2017 12:57

We sometimes have to top up but usually just once.

And not fir much.

Stuff that can be grabbed on way to or from one of our works .

Shopping at aldi meant another actual trip to a supermarket.

MyUntidy · 28/02/2017 13:02

What Roomster says so true.

After years of changing, what I now do is:

  • Delivery from Sainsburys or Tescos every few weeks for lots of general stuff.

  • Top ups every couple of days from nearby Sainsburys or Tescos.

  • Odd treats from M&S or Waitrose when passing Smile.

I am a bit of a foodie though, but as I'm on a diet I don't actually eat that much, which saves quite a bit!

bastardlyandmutley · 28/02/2017 13:06

I really like Aldi and we get the majority of our shopping there and some bits from the Lidl which is conveniently just over the road from the Aldi. I agree though with the posters who say that they can't do a complete shop. I suppose in part this is due to the fact that we are a bit picky over some things and like to get certain brands.

I find Aldi to be cheaper than other supermarkets and I especially rate some of their stuff like steak, chicken fillets, cheeses, cereal, nuts/seeds, dog treats, chocolate, cream/plain yoghurt. I love how quick it is to shop in there too. We can do both Lidl and Aldi in half an hour.

I agree that their veg is a bit hit and miss. If we don't plan on using it within a couple of days I won't buy it from there.
