maybe I just haven't got into the hang of it yet, but I've been going for a while now, and whilst some of it is a lot cheaper than say asda, I just find some of their stuff not that great and I'm having to go to asda to buy it again

anyone else like that?

I find Aldis is okay but the can't understand why people think Lidl is so great. We shopped there once but never again as although it was cheap the food was also nowhere near as good as our local Sainsbury's. Perhaps they vary though and in some places are better than others.

MyWhatICallNameChange · 27/02/2017 16:09

I didn't find it that much cheaper than Asda. And I had to got to Asda anyway because all the times I've been to Aldi there's been no meat.

And they're crisps were inedible. I don't know if we got a bad batch (of 2 different flavours) but they were the most disgusting crisps I've ever had. I love crisps. I was devastated, I tell you. Sad

I'll stick to Asda. Or Morrisons - I've started going there recently and it's good. I get lots of reduced stuff from there.

WhoKn0wsWhereTheTimeG0es · 27/02/2017 16:11

I pick up bits and bobs in there but have never managed a full weekly shop or anything close, the ranges are so limited and you can't rely on them having the same things from week to week. The quality varies a lot too, we think the cereals are awful and unlike a pp our olives got binned as they were not at all nice, rubbery and flavourless.

cowgirlsareforever · 27/02/2017 16:11

I think Aldi quality is fine and some of their products are excellent, especially the Aberdeen Angus beef. My problem with their stores (perhaps this is a local problem) is that their staff are horrible. One of the checkout staff was once really rude to me in front of my ds once and I've heard them moan about elderly people taking too long to put their items on the conveyer belt. It puts me off shopping in Aldi.

Oysterbabe · 27/02/2017 16:13

There's a lot of really poor quality stuff there and I can never get everything I want. I don't go there anymore.

DJBaggySmalls · 27/02/2017 16:16

SuperManStoleMyPants The local pound shops sells a good brand of pesto, red or green.

basicdetailss · 27/02/2017 16:16

I don't go there anymore so yea I agree with you.

ChinChinCaroo · 27/02/2017 16:16

I've kind of stopped shopping there.

Their vegetables are cheap but tasteless IME. Every red pepper I bought was rotten.

Its good for cheap cheeses, parmesan, goats, but thats all.

I used to buy cheap wine there, but now Sainsburys do a great Basics at £3.85 so don;t need to bother.

I found the staff fine, just in a terrible rush, the queues long and depressing, and the atmosphere a bit "edgy" Shock.

Madbengalmum · 27/02/2017 16:17

Aldi is ok. Fruit and veg doesn't last though, and i certainly couldnt get all of my ingredients for cooking from there. I find it very miserable and depressing at times too.
The staff can be acidic, I remember being questioned nazi style about my plans, after purchasing six bottles of champagne. It was highly amusing.

SparkleTwinkleGoldGlitter · 27/02/2017 16:17

I tried Aldi out of curiosity when it first opened near here about a year or so ago and I didn't find the products good quality so I simply haven't shopped there again.

Sunflower6 · 27/02/2017 16:18

I started shopping at Aldi 2 weeks ago on my brothers recommendation but I can't get a full shop there so ending up going to Asda as well. Most of it is ok but my cats don't like the cat food and the cakes are getting a thumbs down from my kids. I bought my son some artisan crisps and they tasted of nothing. I had high hopes of saving money on the weekly shop but there's no point if my kids and cats won't eat the food. I usually shop at Asda and buy a lot of their own brand stuff - I think I may be returning to Asda.

cowgirlsareforever · 27/02/2017 16:20

I wouldn't buy their cakes as they seem to all use palm oil. Having said that, it's really hard to avoid palm oil everywhere.

childmaintenanceserviceinquiry · 27/02/2017 16:20

I feel the same about Lidls. I live in a posh town - the outcry when it opened but everyone shops there now. I dont like the flavour of much of their food and find the fruit and veg goes off really quickly. Their bakery is fantastic. An aldi has opened at the next town over so I would go there instead but the parking is rubbish.

SherlockPotter · 27/02/2017 16:21

I can do most of my shop from there, including buying soya and almond milk but if I want more free from or meat free products then it'll be Tesco/Sainsbury's.

x2boys · 27/02/2017 16:22

i like Aldi you can do a shop in half the time as there is only one or two choices of items but i do miss the choice of the bigger supermarkets like Tesco or Asda Lidl is crap though well the one near me is.

ssd · 27/02/2017 16:24

I bought pastrami and it went off long before the use by date, I threw most of it out

the fruit and veg went off really quick too

I tried a few things for the teens, the aldi version of stuff they like and they didnt really like it

I dont like the crisps or cereals. We dont drink booze. Ds hates the apple juice, too sugary.

I heard the Aberdeen Angus meat is nice and the bread products are great. Tolietries are cheaper and I like the disgwasher tabs.

But I'm not convinced. I admit I hate a giggle at the poster who said she goes on holiday 4 times a year now as she saves money partly in Aldi now Grin I mean, come on....

I wonder if it is cheaper all round than say asda?

Good, I'm glad some of you don't like it, as ours is getting too crowded. Always have to queue to park (unless you go very early, or in the evenings), so I am no longer recommending it to anyone, as I preferred it before too many others discovered it.
I can get everything I need there except wholemeal pasta (and I know some stores stock it) - so I just stock up in Sainsburys once every 6 weeks or so.
I save myself a huge amount of time by shopping in Aldi.
I save at least 1/3 off my bill every week.
The quality of produce in my local store is excellent.
The staff are also nice too.
Maybe we are just lucky with our branch ?

ChinChinCaroo · 27/02/2017 16:25

Lidl looks better to me - more foodie and "continental" Smile than Aldi? Am I wrong then?

LynetteScavo · 27/02/2017 16:25

I think every Aldi must be different- I can't fault the fruit and veg at mine. It's much better than Sainsbury's who have sold me some crap veg 😡

My local Aldi does red & green pesto, but not risotto rice, whatever it's called. Now they do organic milk I can do an entire shop there.

SaltySalt · 27/02/2017 16:25

NotMeNoNo what do you mean?

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 27/02/2017 16:26

YANBU

I like Aldi for some things, but I also like Asda, Morrisons, Tesco and Lidl for other things. I don't mind shopping about but I don't think Aldi is all that brilliant on it's own as they don't do certain products that I can't go without (knorr gravy pots), however, I do prefer their 'handcooked crisps' and our dog likes their dog food. Like PP though, I can't do a full shop there, so tend to go to Asda and then go to Aldi if I NEED something that I can only get there or if I'm passing on the off chance.

DaffodilsAndCrocus · 27/02/2017 16:26

I don't buy the fruit and veg for reasons given by previous posters. Many other things are excellent though.

SaltySalt · 27/02/2017 16:26

Aldi frozen cauliflower cheese is lovely!

TheWeeBabySeamus1 · 27/02/2017 16:26

I hate it, all the chocolate and cakes that everyone says are so amazing taste cheap and horrible. Tried loads of things - tinned beans, Mayo, butter, crisps, frozen desserts etc - and didn't like any of it. The worst was the pork loin I got, cooked it the same day and it was rank, fruit and veg goes off really quickly... Maybe it's just the branch local to me but its not saving me any money when I can't actually eat anything I've bought.

The only things I like from there are the nappies, kitchen roll and anti-bac wipes and it's not really worth making a special trip for.

WritingHome · 27/02/2017 16:27

Such mixed reviews! Incredible.
The olives were delicious though - they were specially select ones in a small tub, marinated in basil and garlic, found in the chiller aisle. Honestly they were good!! Not the ones in the jars in brine. I have never bought them.

I saw on the internet today that Aldi had now gone organic and banned products with pesticides.

I am really struggling to take on board that there are such variances between stores!
