To refuse to call him by his stupid nickname??

So we have a brand new staff member in my team who has a perfectly sensible name - Steven but has decided to use some ridiculously stupid nickname he made up - Sonty Hmm
And he is now constantly correcting all of us and insisting we use his nickname. I am his manager. I feel silly even uttering Sonty. Yet he corrects me every time I say Steven.
Aibi to want to take Sonty and shove it up his bum!
PS not his real name or moronic nickname but they are similar to what I said.

Tell him it sounds like snotty. Also that it's ridiculous.

dowhatnow · 27/02/2017 14:19

Mmm Dazza is a lot worse than Jonty/johnathon. I totally see your point but I suppose you had better call him it - perhaps not in more formal situations though.

Vanillamanilla1 · 27/02/2017 14:20

It sounds like something his mates in the pub would call someone
Id tell him to stop with the correcting of his name and as his manger and not his mate Youllcall him Darren

MenopausalSpice · 27/02/2017 14:21

Actually the problem might not be mine. I see some pps agree with me.
That's a turn up.

splendide · 27/02/2017 14:21

I would really struggle to call someone Dazza - I think I would just avoid saying his name at all!

WankersHacksandThieves · 27/02/2017 14:21

I think I'd have to compromise on Daz. I'd feel stupid calling a grown person in the workplace Dazza. But if he doesn't want you using Darren, you really can't continue.

wizzywig · 27/02/2017 14:23

Jonty is so posh!

MenopausalSpice · 27/02/2017 14:23

What about, if you can't call him Darren, you call him Mr Smith.
(Obvs whatever his name is) .

MrsTarzan1 · 27/02/2017 14:23

YANBU! Dazza is ridiculous!

AssembleTheMinions · 27/02/2017 14:24

I would struggle to use Dazza as well. Its pretty juvenile and sounds unprofessional.

amusedbush · 27/02/2017 14:25

Dazza is ridiculous. Is he 14?

Even Daz would be fine but... Dazza?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 27/02/2017 14:25

YABU, yes.
It's his preferred name, use it.
You have no idea why he might not want to use his given name - perhaps he has bad associations with it, but you're being ridiculous in thinking that you have ANY right to override his own preference just because you "don't like" his nickname. It's not as if it's a swearword or anything! FFS.

ImperialBlether · 27/02/2017 14:25

Dazza is ridiculous! He's not a boy at school any more, ffs!

StormZelda · 27/02/2017 14:25

If it's what everybody calls him I'd get used to it.

Dazza would make me laugh though. It'd me like, you want me to mock you, to your face?

ElspethFlashman · 27/02/2017 14:28

Dazza.

Dazza
I once knew a bloke who was called David. You'd think he would be accustomed to being called Dave or something. But OH NO, he insisted on being called "Keeper".

Why Keeper you ask? "Cos I'm the Keeper of the Flame! Everyone back home calls me Keeper!"

So you'd say Hello David - "Um no it's Keeper actually - Keeper of the Flame, y'know?"

And he corrected you every single time. Never got tired of it. So you were eventually beaten into submission and would call him Keeper with gritted teeth. Ugh.

AssembleTheMinions · 27/02/2017 14:28

I wouldn't be impressed with a new staff member who is junior to me, correcting me either. If he had quietly mentioned that he prefers Dazza then that's not too bad. although I would be saying that in the workplace it would be Darren or Mr Smith

StormZelda · 27/02/2017 14:28

In my last job, there were two (fake names) Louises. We were both Louise C. I was told I had to be Lou. My email address was louC@can'takeanotherdayofthisshit.ie
Nobody has ever called me Lou in my life.

DearMrDilkington · 27/02/2017 14:29

He openly wants to be called Dazza?! He actually asks people to call him that?

Roughly how old is he?Grin

CoraPirbright · 27/02/2017 14:29

Daz is ok at a stretch but Dazza?? Is he a spotty 14 year old with beanpole legs and a blazer 3 sizes too big? I think it sounds very unprofessional.

Westfacing · 27/02/2017 14:29

Dazza/Gazza/Bazza stops in the playground doesnt it?!

I agree.

The OP sounded rather unreasonable at the beginning but I now sympathise! But it's all about connotations .... it sounds a footbally name e.g. Gigsy, Gazza, Motty and not professional. However, if it was a proper minority ethnic name there would be no problem.

I would call him Darren. And he should realise how daft his prefered NN sounds!

alwaysthepessimist · 27/02/2017 14:29

YABVU - just call him by it

YANBU OP. I wouldn't be able to call a work colleague "Dazza". I think if it is a commonly accepted shortening, there's not a problem, e.g. I manage Catherine who's a Cathy, however Dazza isn't in everyday use. I think, as a PP said, it's more like something his mates down the pub would use, and not something a person would refer to themselves as. e.g I know a Terry and you sometimes hear shouts of "Oi, Tezza!"

Does he have any contact with the public, or people from other organisations? I think it could reflect badly on not only him but also on your organisation.

sparechange · 27/02/2017 14:30

I work with a lawyer called Sarah who goes by Saz, and even occasionally Sazzy (like snazzy without the 'n')
It doesn't seem to have held her back - she oversees lots of City mergers and is well-liked

DearMrDilkington · 27/02/2017 14:30
