To take DD to a&e

Dd has hurt her foot and has been limping around since yesterday. She's iced it and rested it but still can't put her foot flat on the ground.

The swelling has gone down but aibu to taker her to a&e tomorrow or is it something for the gP?

No a&e - they can x-ray it if they see the need plus treat sprains and fractured.

Would Minor Injuries be right for that? That's where I went as a kid with sprains and similar

GP will most likely refer for an X-Ray so cut to the chase and take her to A&E. If swelling has subsided a bit though so maybe see how she is tomorrow? Might just need some love and a tubigrip.

If she is managing the pain ok i personally wouldnt take.her now but id wait until first thing 8am. However. If she was in alot of pain with it even when resting then yes id take her now. U no ur dd. How old is she?

More than likely needs an x ray, possibly a cast or splint or something so a&e or minor injuries if you have one local I'd say! Would do it tomorrow though if not in intense pain or anything.

Our local walk-in centre has an X-ray facility for non-emergencies. Have you checked if you have one nearby?

No walk in centre nearby. She's 15 and was in a lot of pain whilst laying down earlier. There isn't any bruising

If it can wait until tomorrow, A&E is not the place.....A&E is for when you need urgent treatment now. Take her to the GP tomorrow if she is still sore, or a walk in or minor injuries unit if there is one near. However, even if it is broken, they probably won't do anything about it unless she needs surgery, and it doesn't sound like she is in a huge amount of pain. Basically, as long as her foot isn't blue/numb/very cold, she's probably just bashed it a bit and there is likely little to worry about!

GP can refer for an x-ray, most hospitals have a walk in xray service so can get it done immediately. The radiographers will look at it / have it looked at and if they see anything that may require it will refer you to a&e where you will be treated.

Services are different in different areas, and you don't want to delay a diagnosis unnecessarily as your DD is in pain. Ring 111 to be sure and they will advise.

where exactly is the pain and how did she hurt it?
I wouldn't go this time of night, she needs her sleep and it might be quieter tomorrow

Agree to call 111. They can advise the quickest and easiest way of getting an x-ray without having to wait around for four plus hours in A&E

If she's able to sleep I'd leave it until the morning and then take her to A&E. If she's in a lot of pain, I'd take her now.

She hurt it whilst running and then had a dance event the same day which involved a lot of leaps and jumps. Now she can't dance on it at all .
The pain is on the inside of her foot,I think that part is called metatarsals

She's been in bed since 8 and hasn't been able to fall asleep but don't want to go to a&e at this time. I will call 111.

A&E OP. My DD is currently lumbered with a broken foot after school first aiders and the locum gp missed it.

Stupid question but feel it to see if it's hot. Apparently hot and swollen = more than likely a break according to the A&E doc we saw. She was in agony and limping and could hardly weight bear broken her metatarsal bone. In, x-rayed and out in under an hour too.

Don't spare the painkillers (at an age-appropriate dose) though, esp as she can't sleep through the pain.

My DDs was on the outside of her foot if that makes sense? (all down the side bit). She hadn't fallen on it or hit or hurt it in anyway or anything. She'd simply had a race with her friends and twisted her foot funny as she stopped and 'snap'.
It's an extremely common injury OP. Hope she's feeling better soon.

Feet are complicated things and need proper speedy treatment. I speak as one who was treated for one foot fracture, but a second one was missed - it is now too late to sort it out without major surgery so I walk with a limp, and with a stick outdoors. I would ring 111.

Yes dont spare the painkillers. I'm assured it's one bastard hell of a painful break. We've pretty much kept Calpol six plus in business this month the doc at fracture clinic told us no Nurofen though. I was giving it her to help the swelling - well, she's asthmatic so was giving her the minimum dose she can tolerate - they said something about it not helping the injury / the body to heal.

Definitely NOT a&e she needs to go to a walk in centre or a minor injury centre it's not an emergency she just has a sore foot, she is at no risk by waiting until tomorow.

111 has said to go to a&e. So will give her some painkillers for tonight and go tomorrow. Dd is asmathic as well Away so we we stay away from certain painkillers.

Muncheysmummy with all due respect some areas DONT have minor injuries or walk in centres. We dont. For breaks you go to a and e. It's not an emergency but it was an accident!

Actually if it's broken it's best being seen to asap so it can be set in a cast so it heals correctly. Also some bone breakages need an op to put pins in.

You said she can't sleep, 111 has said go to A&E, you really should take her.
