Dd has hurt her foot and has been limping around since yesterday. She's iced it and rested it but still can't put her foot flat on the ground.

The swelling has gone down but aibu to taker her to a&e tomorrow or is it something for the gP?

Thankyou LemonDrizzle the lovely A&E doctor said metatarsal breaks are so hard to spot. Especially in children as they're quite tenacious and keep walking on their injuries so people assume "she's walking on it so she must be fine" and they can be done SO easily. Like I said DD never even fell with hers.

I think it's an easier break for children to do as their bones are still squishy too.
Then again. My sister walked about on her broken foot for four weeks going to work and everything before she went and got hers x-rayed!

When I did this a few weeks ago I went to minor injuries.. they said ligament damage. It got worse a couple of days later so I went to the GP.. who promptly sent me to A&E where they said it was a stress fracture and wouldn't have been picked up at a nurse led unit with low quality screens for X-rays. Should have just gone to A&E in the first place. Turns out the two minor injuries I visited in succession last year with a similar injury also missed a fracture I'd done then.

If I waited until the morning the GP could of missed the stress fracture and said it was just a sprain because they're not easy to spot. Or dd could of missed a lot of the school day faffing around with GP and being sent to a&e.

Thank you everyone and Away hope your dd's break heals soon x

SoupDragon it always worries me when people say no A&E. If the OP had waited until the morning and gone to the GPs they'd have only sent her to A&E anyway!

Definitely NOT a&e she needs to go to a walk in centre or a minor injury centre it's not an emergency she just has a sore foot, she is at no risk by waiting until tomorow.

I am smiling at how wrong this turned out to be :) regardless, a foot that is giving so much pain the child can't sleep is not "just a sore foot".

Thanks for updating OP and glad you didn't have to wait too long.

Just saw your update Lemon. Just goes to show why you shouldn't always listen to people telling you not to go Hmm

Hope it heals soon and keep her topped up with painkillers. Flowers DD is 4 weeks into her break and still finds it incredibly painful some days.

I was pleasantly suprised too, we usually only go in a n e for the asthma attacks too so we nestled in for a long wait thinking we'd be there hours. Done and dusted in 45minutes.

TinkleBinkle I was guilt ridden too. DD is known for being a bit of a drama queen so when even the locum gp said sprain and we came back home and she was still complaining, I was going "Miss pixie. You're taking the mick now. Doc said you're fine".

How bad did I feel when I found out she'd broken it? She got a McDonalds out of me Grin

2 hours in A&E is definitely a good result! Hope your DD is morecomfortable now :)

It stands for accident and emergency. Not emergency only. We were advised by our GP to take DD to A&E if not better on the Monday. The OP said she doesn't have a walk in centre/MIU where they are.
We don't have one of those magical Minor Injuries Units either (we could do with one to free A&E up of sports injuries on a Sunday afternoon).

Literally not one member of staff at that A&E will berate the OP for taking her DD down with a suspected broken metatarsal. No one berated us either and they were more than helpful.

A&e or walk in to get X-ray. Youve no idea whats happened without an xray. This isnt something to leave to see if it gets better. Its highly likely she just twisted it but without xray you dont know.

Thank you to everyone for the advice and those who told me to go to a&e instead of waiting.

Dd has a metatarsal stress fracture. She's now in an air cast for 6-8 weeks !

Only had to wait 2hrs in a&e too.

It will help if you tell the x-ray people that she dances as stress fractures in dancers' feet are common, but are quite hard to spot unless they are looking extremely closely. My dancer dd had a similar injury a couple of years ago after running, the A&E people were lovely and got a second (more senior) person to double-check the x-ray.

Hope she's OK.

Yup take her to A & E if no decent walk in, my dd lost her footing on the stairs, didn't fall just stumbled, began limping but didn't seem to be in any pain. I left if for days thinking it was a sprain, Nope! Snapped metatarsal. I went to our nearest walk in which has an Xray and they showed us the damage. Completely in half, I was guilt ridden for months. They put her in a space boot for 6 weeks, had an appointment with Dr at hospital a week and a half later and that was it. All done, apart from the guilt. That I still have.. Smile Wine

If you can ring the a&he department and ask, some won't X-ray for minor injuries at this time of night and tell you to come back in the morning.

She's in so much pain she can't sleep so yes, you're right to take her now. I'm glad you've changed your mind!

Hopefully you won't be there too long. Good luck!

We don't have a minor injuries unit.

Thought maybe a&e at this time wouldn't be suitable as it's not an emergency. I've only ever had to take her to a&e with asthma attacks so Im not sure what's best.

I will take her now

I'm confused too.
You said she can't sleep, 111 has said go to A&E, you really should take her.

Muncheysmummy with all due respect some areas DONT have minor injuries or walk in centres. We dont. For breaks you go to a and e. It's not an emergency but it was an accident!

Actually if it's broken it's best being seen to asap so it can be set in a cast so it heals correctly. Also some bone breakages need an op to put pins in.
