To ask if you love your job, what do you do?

I'm wondering if people who love their jobs are just more enthusiastic people.

Do you genuinely love your job, like look forward to going to work most days? Is there anything that you dislike?

Did you always know what you wanted to do or have a career change? Have you have a job previously that you disliked?

I'm really stuck in a rut and need inspiration. I'm in a boring but equally stressful job but with good perks.

Raising, not raisin. Grin

celebrityskin · 26/02/2017 18:01

GP here.
I love my job too.
It's the people that make it. Yes it's super busy, I feel stressed and tearful at times. It's never ending. BUT it takes one consultation where you feel you've made a difference that keeps you going. I have 40ish patient contacts a day. I really value the relationships I build. The best bits are seeing people trying to get pregnant then seeing them through pregnancy and early parenthood, through to palliative care. Even though it's terribly sad being able to support families and have a "good death" feels terribly rewarding and humbling.

Good thread! Helpful to remind oneself of the positives!

I'm starting my new job next week and I'm really looking forward to it. It's as an employment officer for people with learning disabilities so I'll be supporting people in finding and sustaining jobs. It's a bit of a tangent from what I'm doing but I think hope I'll be able to do a good job.

ilovesooty · 26/02/2017 18:12

Education Training and Employment coordinator for the community drug and alcohol services. I absolutely love it.

Fishcakey · 26/02/2017 18:13

Yes I do. Veterinary Receptionist. I cuddle puppies every day.

strugglingstepdad · 26/02/2017 18:14

Hgv driver :)

Hate the company I work for but love the job!

Was an IT engineer for years, but hate working in an office!

LunaLambBhuna · 26/02/2017 18:16

Science teacher. Love it now that I'm in a school that suits me. Was on the brink of leaving teaching until I found a wonderful school.

witsender · 26/02/2017 18:20

I work for a local Foodbank. Not at all using any of my professional qualifications, and get paid little above minimum wage, but I work with such a passionate, lovely group of staff and volunteers that it is hugely worthwhile. We make such a difference every day and I love that. I can't imagine not working for a charity again tbh.

KatharinaRosalie · 26/02/2017 18:23

Yes I love both my jobs. I'm a lawyer, in-house right now. There's something new and interesting happening every day.

I'm also a group fitness instructor. Absolutely love it, I get so much energy from being in front of the class. And people saying that 'Oh I really didn't feel like coming to the gym today, but then I saw you were teaching..'

yorkshapudding · 26/02/2017 18:25

yorkshapudding - did you not find the difference in pay from senior nurse (by that am assuming 8b or above) to counsellor a big drop? I agree the work would be rewarding though.

My job title was Senior Nurse but I was band 7 and technically part time (although I had to bring work home every evening and weekend and was fielding calls/emails on my 'non working days' more often than not so didn't feel it) so now working 5 days (8-4) pw term time only in my current role I'm actually slightly better off. It helps that my school is only a 10 min drive away as opposed to my previous commute which was an hour each way. I would have been prepared to take a substantial pay cut to be honest for the increased job satisfaction and reduced stress.

colonelgoldfish · 26/02/2017 18:43

Early years teacher and leader. Although it has its ups and downs, overall I LOVE my job.

ollieplimsoles · 26/02/2017 18:47

Absolutely lovely to see so many teachers and careers advisers are truly passionate about their jobs, I hope my dd is lucky enough to meet some of you when she goes to school.

MsJamieFraser · 26/02/2017 18:50

I'm in housing, I manage thousands of properties. (Vague so I don't put myself)

PenguinRoar · 26/02/2017 18:51

Theatre director - very fulfilling to entertain people and especially to run education programmes or supporting people to learn. I get to be creative every day.

emma6776 · 26/02/2017 18:56

HR adviser. Every day is different and I love it! We're a 'yes' organisation (so if someone asks for a different working pattern/to go part time etc we say yes unless it's totallly unfeasable).

Babycurls · 26/02/2017 19:00

Oh lots of replies, will be reading all of these.

I'm in admin loads of us doing the same job and it doesn't feel like we are making a difference to anything. Definitely not rewarding.

Nursery manager and I LOVE my job
Working with children is all I have ever wanted to do
It is so rewarding and I am very passionate about the early years
Yes, it has its challenges but I love the fact that every day is different and now that I'm manager I get to develop my staff as well as the children

SquidgeyMidgey · 26/02/2017 19:06

Secondary school teacher. The hours and money are awful, I do it purely because I love it. Teenagers are bonkers, and the eureka moments are priceless.

KellyBoo800 · 26/02/2017 19:09

LOVE my job. I work in a senior governmental office. Have been doing this job for years but in different teams and departments, and have also hated the job with a passion. It's very much determined by who I am working with, and where I am now I am surrounded by the most amazing people.

SquidgeyMidgey · 26/02/2017 19:13

Sorry, the rest of the answer would be I dislike the hours I have to put in at home. I came from engineering and periodically think about going back when DH waves job adverts under my nose for less hours and 3x my salary... It's the old story of choosing between financial reward and job satisfaction.

wonderingsoul · 26/02/2017 19:13

Nursery nurse inly been in the job 4 months but i love it. Iv done some horriable jobs like cleaning public loos. But i can honestly say i love going into work, and some days i cant wait to get back in. I work with children from 4 months to 3 and its so rewarding. Staff feel like family to good managers (most the time lol)

I love it.

thatsnotmyusername · 26/02/2017 19:29

Northernlites I could have written your post word for word Flowers

Jaagojaago · 26/02/2017 20:14

Lecturer - soon to be Senior Lecturer- at university. Very research active international academic. Absolutely absolutely love my job.

BradleyPooper · 26/02/2017 20:17

Me! Executive director for a non profit. I work from home full time so can do school pick ups etc and make up my hours in the evening. I have one pt admin lady (she works from her home) helping me but I set the strategy, make decisions and do most of the work. Meet with my board every 2 months and am fully accountable to them for achieving objectives but have plenty of freedom regarding how I do that.

BradleyPooper · 26/02/2017 20:18

Oh and my non profit awards college scholarships to really smart kids on very low income (not in the U.K.) and it's so incredibly rewarding.
