Woke up this morning to find my neighbour "pruning"the lovely tree on some shared ground right outside my house. It looks awful and is in full view of our front Windows. What can I do. Apart from cry.

Prune her hair while she sleeps.

Make a voodoo doll that looks just like her and pin away!!

What's the problem? Pruning is good for trees and it will grow into a better shape as soon as spring is here. Why the tears?

Presumably she knows nothing about pruning and it looks shite.

Of course it looks awful. It needs to get its spring growth. Most trees look awful when leafless and freshly pruned.

I agree that most trees will look better in the long run if they are pruned, but just after the pruning they often don't they look great.

If it's on shared ground they should have let you know they were going to do it?

In future do the pruning yourself, so that the neighbour doesn't need to. If you couldn't be arsed to get it ready for the spring then you don't really have the right to complain about someone else's well-intentioned-but-ultimately-shit attempt.

It's the best time to prune though. My dp 'pruned' my apple trees in the garden - with a chainsaw.

They are back to stocky branches now, and prob won't fruit this year, but it needed to be done.

Crying won;t bring the twigs back. Getting a grip will probably help.

One of my neighbours told me a few years back about how I needed to prune the trees and bushes right back that were in my front garden, she also showed me which bits to cut ( I am pretty clueless when it comes to gardening). They looked awful once done but come spring they were absolutely stunning and I have continued to do as suggested each year. So maybe give it a chance you may be pleasantly surprised.

OP, unless you reply to this thread with a photo of a irreparably damaged tree or story of 'pruning' down to stump level then we have to judge that ...

I used to work with a guy who cried when the council pruned the tree outside his house. He was a bit bonkers though. I just remember him coming into work all upset one day and when he explained why I genuinely didn't know what to say.

I suspect the tree will be ok OP.

Kingjoffrey thanks for making me smile! She looks like she uses the lawn mower on her hair already. I love the tree. It usually has a blackbird nesting in it each year and last year a small group of waxwings took up residence. As for the others it is not a fruit tree or anything that needs pruning it (was) about 4 meters high and not been pruned in the 20 years we have been here. It's a naturAl tree surrounded by grass and daffordills not a garden. Yes it will grow back but I'm worried that the chainsaw cuts near the top will let in damp and cause it to rot. Plus it looks shit and they don't even have to look at it every day.

Many trees need pollarding every couple of years and yes they don't look great after, but they grow and will look good then.
