202g Steak for 3 People?

Davros · 23/02/2017 14:53

DH is cooking beef stroganoff for three of us tonight and has come home with what looks to me like a minuscule steak. I was thinking big pot, hearty and tasty meal but it looks like it will be more like nouvelle cuisine. He thinks I'm just a greedy cah. As someone who more or less doesn't cook, am I misjudging his sweet little steak and it's "plenty" in his words or will I barely be able to wet my lips with this dinner?

I'm following a diet at the moment, and even my portion size of steak is 180g!

expatinscotland · 23/02/2017 15:41

That's dead stingy. Of course on MN, that should feed 8 people and if it doesn't they are all obese.

roseshippy · 23/02/2017 15:45

tell him he is bonkers for buying fillet steak. so expensive.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/02/2017 15:46

A fillet steak in a pub or restaurant would probably be about 150-170 g, so is quite generous for one person, but a real stretch for three, especially as one is a mushroom hating teen boy.

£50 a kilo sounds a lot though, even for fillet steak. I get it from a posh farm shop and it's about half that price.

FurryLittleTwerp · 23/02/2017 15:46

I use rump for stroganoff as it's relatively cheap so I can afford loads.

He has eyes smaller than his stomach, clearly Hmm

We use about 350g for 4 people (2 adults and 2 very hungry teens) and it's fine TBH.

However steak fillet to do a beef stroganoff is crazy. I sue the cheapest cut I can find and out everything in the slow cooker. Much cheaper and very tasty.

hmcAsWas · 23/02/2017 15:49

150 - 200g per person.

Bless him - he doesn't have a clue does he!

expatinscotland · 23/02/2017 15:49

I'd make myself a fish finger sandwich. Or a chip butty. That's not enough food.

BertrandRussell · 23/02/2017 15:50

Just looked up my recipe which is from the Hairy Bikers Diet book- 600g for 4 people.

Pumperthepumper · 23/02/2017 15:52

Don't think it's enough, also think it's a waste of fillet steak. I use sirloin in stroganoff, I think it has a better flavour.

BertrandRussell · 23/02/2017 15:52

And the whole point of a stroganoff is that you use th best quality meat you can and cook it quickly. Otherwise it's stew.

Then it's not beef stroganoff! Should be cooked quickly using fillet steak. I use 500g for two people when I do it and that gives very generous portions.

sarebear1983 · 23/02/2017 15:55

200g for 3 people is a tiny amount, it would need to be near 450-500g for that amount of people

Davros · 23/02/2017 15:57

bertrandrussell that is what he is saying. Stroganoff should be made with fillet steak and cooked fairly quickly. He is a stickler for cooking food the "correct" way, not the way most people (me) like to eat it - lots of sauce and fat!! He is going out again now to buy a bit more steak. He often dies thus, has a brainstorm in the shop and has to go back

If it was for a steak dinner, then yes it would be stingy, but it is for a stroganoff - a quick cooked stir fry of steak, onions and mushrooms with a cream sauce

TriJo · 23/02/2017 15:58

202g steak is for one, or me and my 11 month old DS at a push!

I would probably use around 500g of steak if I was cooking a meal for three hungry adults.

gres · 23/02/2017 16:03

If I buy fillet steak to just grill I would usually get about 150g each, including for greedy teenagers. I get bigger quantities if it isn't fillet.
However stroganoff is different, any kind of meat for stir fry goes much further than as a steak because it's cut into thin strips.
Still it will be a little skimpy.

derxa · 23/02/2017 16:04

1kg of mince for spag bol between 4 people in the derxa house.
Do you need fillet to make stroganoff? He can make a wee stroganoff for himself.

dailydance · 23/02/2017 16:05

That's for one person, not three, in my book. ... I like my meat though so may be a greedy cah

gres · 23/02/2017 16:06

Classic stroganoff does require fillet. It's cooked very quickly.
If you use cheaper beef or pork and slow cook it it's lovely but it's goulash rather than stroganoff.

BertrandRussell · 23/02/2017 16:07

"He can make a wee stroganoff for himself."

Sod that for a game of soldiers- stroganoff is delicious!

paxillin · 23/02/2017 16:08

I use 200g per person.

Davros · 23/02/2017 16:09

Mmmmm that brandy and cream sauce. I wouldn't say no to a goulash either

glad to hear he has decided to go back to the shop and buy more steak - that's just not enough for 3 people, its fine for 1 person but that's about it.
