Primark forced to remove racist t-shirt from sale

I don't watch the walking dead. So this reference would have gone straight over my head.

But again I'm the generation who sang catch a tiger by its toe so wouldn't have immediately gotten the racist connection either.

But once it was pointed out, I got it and agree it should definitely be removed

What were they thinking making this?

Yep..just you thegirl

sussexman · 22/02/2017 19:52

They won't be on the rack HateSummer. They'll be being worn. And now the story has broken we know exactly what type of person will wear them.

limitedperiodonly · 22/02/2017 19:52

I am an inveterate muddier of water NotYoda Wink. But I agree with you that t shirt is wrong on many counts and I am a fan of the show.

Though I think it's got a bit boring lately, Negan's psychotic rants bore me and Daryl looks dreadful.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 22/02/2017 19:55

limited

Why cant darryl cut his hair...they must have scissors other people manage

And a tux...its a zombie apocalypse he must be able to find a tux...or a firemans uniform...the helmet and trousers at least

gamerchick · 22/02/2017 19:57

t doesn't feature a character, that would be a person - it features a weapon, covered in barbed wire

She's called Lucille, she earned her place. Shock

Soubriquet · 22/02/2017 19:59

She's called Lucille, she earned her place

That just made me laugh

NotYoda · 22/02/2017 19:59

I think I'd like it but i only get terrestrial channels and i've got Box Sets literally coming out of my ears.

Lucked · 22/02/2017 20:02

My 5 year old was singing the "catch a baby " version this week. Must have been taught it at nursery, I was a little surprised and held my breath until I heard the second line. Looks like the rhyme isn't going anywhere.

I wouldn't think racist but I got the reference.

StarryIllusion · 22/02/2017 20:02

Oh ffs. The world is off its nut. People just need to grow the fuck up and stop taking offence to everything. It's a quote from a TV show for crying out loud. Most wouldn't even make the connection now to the original rhyme.

Mynestisfullofempty · 22/02/2017 20:04

I think it's the lack of context on the t-shirt. A rhyme that could be taken to be racist, next to a picture of a bat with barbed wire round it. If you don't watch the walking dead (and I've never seen it) but you know the rhyme and you know there is a racist version of that rhyme then you'd probably think it's an offensive t-shirt.

Precisely. I've never seen The Walking Dead and I only know the racist version of that rhyme ('cos I'm old) and so that is what would come to mind if I saw that t-shirt.

sibys1 · 22/02/2017 20:08

I wouldn't have got the reference and, if I'd seen someone wearing it in the street, I'd have assumed it was racist.

It might not be racist in intent, but has clear racist connotations, particularly if people don't know the reference.

gamerchick · 22/02/2017 20:15

So where are we on the 'little pig little pig let me in' negan shirt? Offensive to someone? or the 'suck my nuts' Abraham shirt? That has to offend someone surely.

MrsDoylesTeabags · 22/02/2017 20:26

Well maybe some people like to wear offensive t shirts to make up for their lack of personality.
If I saw someone wearing this t shirt I would see it as racist statement and would avoid that person

SolomanDaisy · 22/02/2017 20:27

I love TWD, but it hasn't been free from accusations of racism before anyway. I certainly don't think ' but it's Walking Dead' = so it can't be racist.

DioneTheDiabolist · 22/02/2017 20:28

Where I was in the 70s, it was "Catch a piggy". When I first found out that some people sang "tiger", I thought it was ridiculous because piggies squeal and tigers don't.Hmm I only found out about the Nword version in my 20s.

As a piggy catcher and TWD fan, I would not have attributed racist connotations to the song.

limitedperiodonly · 22/02/2017 20:31

People just need to grow the fuck up and stop taking offence to everything.

I always think that when I read stories of outrage over people burning poppies at remembrance time.

limitedperiodonly · 22/02/2017 20:33

And a tux...its a zombie apocalypse he must be able to find a tux...or a firemans uniform...the helmet and trousers at least

Rufus Grin

limitedperiodonly · 22/02/2017 20:36

Rufus if there was a fireman's hose episode in TWD at least Daryl would get a good wash.

limitedperiodonly · 22/02/2017 20:40

There was an episode where someone turned a high pressure hose from a fire engine on the zombies and saved the day. I can't remember who that was but I think he'd been a bit of a shit before but that made everyone briefly like him. And then he died horribly. Shit happens

Unicorn81 · 22/02/2017 20:40

I wouldnt have thought of it being racist but again probably a generation thing.

I do love the Abraham one though 'suck my nuts', he was brilliant!

HateSummer · 22/02/2017 20:41

The "bat" is called Lucille! She's even had a table place laid out for her 😂😂😂. She's a character all right!

"And now the story has broken we know exactly what type of person will wear them."
Who? Someone who likes TWD and can't afford proper branded tshirts? 😆

SolomanDaisy · 22/02/2017 20:42

That was Eugene with the hose.

gamerchick · 22/02/2017 20:42

It was Eugene I believe and he's not dead yet.

Maybe next week.

gamerchick · 22/02/2017 20:43

Who? Someone who likes TWD and can't afford proper branded tshirts? 😆

Grin ruddy right, mine was neigh on 20 quid but I have to see what primark are offering after all this advertising. Wink

squishysquirmy · 22/02/2017 20:48

So what would you think about a shirt that said "burn them all" next to a star of David?
