AIBU; Sanity check, John Lewis refusing to price match

So, trying to buy a turntable to play 76rpm jazz records for my father's funeral. Found a good one on Which, and I was going to buy on John Lewis as I normally shop with them. However, £40 cheaper with Richer Sounds. Sanity check please? Are these turntables in any way different? I'm asking John Lewis to price match with the Richer Sounds one, which is, according to Which, the same model only £40 cheaper. It's for my father's funeral - hoping to play his 76 rpm jazz records. John Lewis have refused, claiming they are different models. I know grief can do strange things but how are these different?? www.which.co.uk/reviews/record-players-and-turntables/audiotechnica-atlp120usb/compare-prices

Shouldn't it be never knowingly oversold?

Sukitakeitoff · 21/02/2017 21:59

John Lewis price matched a stereo against the Richer Sounds price - I was in store and just showed them the Richer Sounds price on my phone. They matched it there and then.

I would've been just as happy to buy from Richer Sounds but it was several miles away and I was standing in JL.

Floggingmolly · 21/02/2017 21:59

Or never knowingly undercut?

Sukitakeitoff · 21/02/2017 22:00

No, they mean they don't let other stores undersell them (like 'undercut').

Saucy..its the warranty and the fact they advertise as price match which they certainly dont in my case. Bought my camera from xxx camera exchange in the end and still using now 10 years later. Means i dont trust their advertising.

TheMightyMing · 21/02/2017 22:20

Richer sounds are amazing, so helpful and knowledgeable.

BarryTheKestrel · 21/02/2017 22:58

My DH works for richer soubds and in our town the rival store for electricals is JL.

If I were you I'd buy from richer sounds. If you talk to them, either the sales call centre or in store if you have one local, they may do a deal on a guarantee if you want the extra guarantee. I know with their TV guarantees they do/did a thing that if you don't use them after the time period of the guarantee you can get a refund of what you paid.

I can see no reason why that price match would be refused though. If you've only done it online, I'd call and ask.

singleWhiteMale · 21/02/2017 23:41

Are you sure it's necessary to provide your own turntable and records? We wanted to play some jazz records at my Dad's funeral and just had to let the crematorium know what we wanted. They have access to some kind of online music library with a very wide repertoire.

I love JL! They price matched a Kitchenaid for me before Christmas (compared to Debenhams).

And then when it went cheaper still in the sale a week or two later, they refunded the difference for me! I just had to phone in with my receipt number.

They also don't quibble when you take things back which is important with electrical IMO.

mymilisbatshit · 22/02/2017 12:18

John Lewis will price match if the other company have a high st presence also the one from richer sounds must come with the same warranty length usually ALL electrical products from John Lewis come with 2 years unless the manufacturers warranty is more then 1 year. This is probably why they are refusing to price match.

DesolateWaist · 22/02/2017 12:43

Not true about the warranty length. I've had countless price matches of electrical products.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/02/2017 12:54

'Never knowingly undersold' is bollocks to make you think that JL is cheaper than elsewhere, when it isn't.

Desolate says she has had 'countless' price matches, which means that all these items were more expensive than elsewhere until she asked them to price match. Did that cause JL to lower their prices? I doubt it, even though by giving someone the price match, they are alerted to the fact that they are more expensive. I bet plenty of other people paid the higher price anyway.

People go on about the service and the warranty, but in my experience, electrical goods are pretty reliable and last for many years beyond the warranty anyway, and if they do break, you've got your statutory rights anyway. Things should last a reasonable period, which is usually 3-6 years.

When our 13 year old, bought from Curry's dishwasher died, I looked at Currys and JL for the cheapest available Bosch replacement. Currys were £50 cheaper and could deliver the next day. The one with the same features from JL would have taken a week for delivery and as it had a very slightly different model number, they probably wouldn't have price matched anyway.

I'm not waiting a week without a dishwasher and going through the hassle of a price match that they probably wouldn't honour to buy from JL to get a warranty that I'll probably never need - said dishwasher is now at least 2 years old and used daily without any faults anyway.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/02/2017 22:12

I'd rather go without or pay extra than buy from Currys. Awful shop, terrible staff, no after sales to speak of. It's one shop I wouldn't shed any tears over if it went under.

SallyGinnamon · 22/02/2017 22:19

Price match is for when other places have special offers e.g. 10% off homeware at Debenhams. JL will match their offer price if you ask. Doesn't mean JL is routinely dearer than elsewhere.

Shyposter · 22/02/2017 22:20

JL have price matched for me 3 times now - once before I bought the item (a laptop), and twice after the items I bought from them were reduced post-purchase. I always buy electricals from them as the guarantee is worth the effort of getting to the store (or waiting for delivery).

No idea why they wouldn't price match if you can prove the lower price locally though. Richer Sounds are v reputable so I'd just go with them if it's no extra bother.

waterfallrainbow · 24/02/2017 22:00

Update! John Lewis have written to apologise. Apparently it was an error.

And in the meanwhile my husband the hifi fanatic has waded in to tell me that I shouldn't buy that turntable because it isn't good enough. And why didn't I ask him first? What I should apparently get is a £1k turntable plus phono amp or something. And that right there is why I didn't ask him first ;)

Have concluded that the simplest thing is to get some musicians to come and play at the wake.

That's good that they aknowledged they made a mistake.

I hope everything goes well with the wake. Thanks

salsmum · 25/02/2017 05:17

I made the mistake of asking JL to price match a cooker apparently it was an online shop IYSWIM so they said no...some times shops will also specify that they only price made if the cheaper goods are on sale under a certain distance away from a particular shop I.e. Within a 5 mile radius of the JL you are asking to price match...lots of pros and cons to price match 'conditions'

Catlady1976 · 25/02/2017 07:20

I agree op. They seem to always have an excuse to get out of it. We had similar when buying something like a washing machine. This time they couldn't as they give an extra years warranty.

Coldilox · 25/02/2017 08:11

I've had them price match with RS before, with a TV. In fact the sales assistant was the one who looked up the RS deal and told me to request a price match.
