AIBU; Sanity check, John Lewis refusing to price match

So, trying to buy a turntable to play 76rpm jazz records for my father's funeral. Found a good one on Which, and I was going to buy on John Lewis as I normally shop with them. However, £40 cheaper with Richer Sounds. Sanity check please? Are these turntables in any way different? I'm asking John Lewis to price match with the Richer Sounds one, which is, according to Which, the same model only £40 cheaper. It's for my father's funeral - hoping to play his 76 rpm jazz records. John Lewis have refused, claiming they are different models. I know grief can do strange things but how are these different?? www.which.co.uk/reviews/record-players-and-turntables/audiotechnica-atlp120usb/compare-prices

I had the same problem with John Lewis, over a pair of sunglasses in vision express.
Everything was identical including model number, they lost my custom!

Stormyseasallround · 21/02/2017 21:05

They happily price matched a scooter for me, on the only occasion I've had call to ask them to, so it's a system which can work.

SaucyJack · 21/02/2017 21:12

So what does one actually gain from the price match thingy?

We don't have JL here so I don't really get why one would feel the need to run in there and tell them all about it that you can get a camera 20 quid cheaper in the shop down the road.

I'd just buy the cheap one and get on with me day.

Norland · 21/02/2017 21:16

Richer Sounds will give you a one-year warranty, JLP will give you two-years warranty

If you want a longer warranty than the standard tweleve-months then Richer Sounds will sell you another five-years for £23.90.

Floggingmolly · 21/02/2017 21:18

I thought it only worked if you'd actually bought an item from John Lewis and subsequently discovered you could have got it cheaper elsewhere?
If it's cheaper down the road; they're probably perfectly justified in saying well just get it down the road, then...
Why bother trudging back to JL to try to force them to sell it to you at a lower price? Confused

Floggingmolly · 21/02/2017 21:19

Ah, warranty...

BlisseyMon · 21/02/2017 21:20

On John Lewis the manufacturers part code is AT-LP120-USB-CBK

I can't see this code on the Richer sounds? Is it there but Ive missed it?

I think it's the same product but I guess if the model no doesn't match then John Lewis's first reaction is to refuse to price match. I'd try asking for clarification.

I always prefer to buy from John Lewis.

AlexanderHamilton · 21/02/2017 21:21

They price matched a surface tablet for me from PC world. I just had to send them a screenshot of PC world website.

Did it for the extra guarantee.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 21/02/2017 21:25

They've price matched a camera in Currys for me. I refuse to buy in Currys so checked the price, went into JL and got the camera cheaper and with a better warranty.

brasty · 21/02/2017 21:25

John Lewis have gone downhill recently. Buy from Richer Sounds

BlisseyMon · 21/02/2017 21:25

Norland. I've had items price matched where the warranty is longer with John Lewis. The last time was for a phone and was in the Autumn - it was a two year warranty with JL but only a year warranty with the company I price matched it with. I could have just been lucky or they could have changed their policy.

DesolateWaist · 21/02/2017 21:29

Have you asked in store or have you done an online request?

In the past I have been refused one online but have had it OK'd in store.

The price match is not a con. I have used it countless times. They will price match any company that has a bricks and mortar store within 50 miles of ANY John Lewis branch.

TBH OP, that's a decent turntable but if it's just to play 78 RPMs, then why not buy one for

NotStoppedAllDay · 21/02/2017 21:33

Fifty miles?? 8 according to this

DesolateWaist · 21/02/2017 21:37

I have been quoted 50 several times in store.

They have price matched Go Electrical for me and they are in Settle which I think is a good distance from any JL store.

BlisseyMon · 21/02/2017 21:42

I'm confused about the 8 miles radius thing. I always order online and I can price match anywhere in the country. (At least I have done that just after Xmas). I wonder if the 8 (or whatever) radius thing only applies if you are buying from a particular John Lewis store ?

PineapplePolly · 21/02/2017 21:42

John Lewis isn't the best recently. Shame really.

PineapplePolly · 21/02/2017 21:42

customer service that is

ihatethecold · 21/02/2017 21:42

What does "never knowingly undersold "mean?
I've never been able to work it out Confused

HellonHeels · 21/02/2017 21:44

That comment is in poor taste and quite unkind Hee

DesolateWaist · 21/02/2017 21:45

Nothing about distance here:

DesolateWaist · 21/02/2017 21:47

What does "never knowingly undersold "mean?

It means that they watch the prices of their main competitors and will drop their prices accordingly. So for example if Debenhams are having a blue cross sale then JL will drop their prices to match.

ihatethecold · 21/02/2017 21:50

Thanks Desolate.
I understand the gist of it but not the actual sentence!
It just doesn't make any sense to me.

Liiinoo · 21/02/2017 21:52

I have never understood why people buy from JL when other retailers offer the same things cheaper. If JL were genuinely concerned about giving customers the best possible deals they would be doing the price checking, not making the customers do it. Supermarkets manage to track rival store prices and they sell many more products than a department store.

Also, have you checked online (Spotify, Amazon, jazz sites) to see if you can get digital versions of your dads music? That might be more user friendly on the day.

I hope it goes off well.
